[Hip-Hop] Dag Savage (Johaz & Exile) California Dreamin’ Feat. Fashawn & Co$$ (Prod. Exile)

With the cold weather dropping in without any warning (other than the turn of the page on my calendar), it’s easy to fondly imagine an alternate lifestyle out in California, with days spent on the beach kicking up sand and relaxing in the sun. Well, Dag Savage is here to remind us that life in the Golden State isn’t all sunshine and smiles. Just like everybody else, the folks there have their daily struggles as well. While the title “Cali Dreamin” sounds warm and idealistic, the content of the song touches on much harsher realities in regards to poverty and violence. Johaz, along with fellow left coasters Fashawn and Co$$, all reflect on their own rough upbringings over a melodic looping piano brought courtesy of the always excellent Exile. Although this track isn’t featured on any specific projects just yet, stay tuned for more Dag Savage in the near future. I have a feeling you’ll like what you hear.

[Hip-Hop] Murs & Fashawn – This Generation (ft. Adrian)

Earlier today, LA-based veteran Murs and Fresno-bred up ‘n comer Fashawn dropped the title track off their upcoming collaborative album. On “This Generation,” the two Cali natives reminisce about their respective experiences growing up over the light, guitar-driven instrumental of Beatnick and K-Salaam, the producers behind the entire project. Both emcees manage to capture the struggles and unifying qualities of their generations without losing the bright, laid-back feel of the west coast.

Stream and cop this strong single below and, if you’re digging it like we are, make sure to grab This Generation when it hits stores on September 25th via Duck Down Music. You can also pre-order the album now on iTunes.

[Hip-Hop] Murs & Fashawn – Slash Gordan (prod. Beatnick & K-Salaam)

The pairing of Murs & Fashawn never really occurred to me before, but after listening to this new single from the West Coast duo, it seems like a match made in hip-hop heaven. The California natives trade bars over some resounding steel drums and gritty guitar riffs, courtesy of Beatnick & K-Salaam, who will be producing their entire EP titled This Generation, dropping September 25th.  Look out for the sure to be awesome release, and make sure to grab a free download of the track from Duck Down Records.

Planet Asia ft. Willie the Kid and Fashawn – Fuck Rappers

If you haven’t heard of Planet Asia, allow me to introduce you. He’s one half of the duo Cali Agents (with Rasco) but has become better known in the hip hop community for his solo releases since he signed with Interscope Records. The track Fuck Rappers features a laid back sample, reminiscent of something Kanye has used in the past and features two worthy guests in Willie the Kid and Fashawn. Roll the windows down and cruise the town because this has that feel good easy summer flow. Clever lyrics deliver a simple and boastful message but damnit you’ll be bobbing your head involuntarily shorty after it starts. You can find this track on Planet Asia’s new album Black Belt Theater which is worth a listen to based off the name alone but features quality hip hop, if the title doesn’t convince you.
