[Electronic] Kenton Slash Demon – Syko

Kenton Slash Demon
Syko

After hearing Kenton Slash Demon‘s “Harpe,” the first single from their upcoming Harpe/Syko EP, the Danish production tandem immediately became one of our top acts to look out for this year. A couple days ago they let loose “Syko,” presumably the second half of their upcoming Future Classic release, which solidifies the textured, blissful sound that they’ve established with their catalogue thus far.

Carrying on the deep, instrumental style, “Syko” sees KSD taking a groovier approach all the while maintaining the unmatched mind-altering relaxation established on “Harpe.” Once again, it displays how a well-crafted instrumental composition can evoke unmatched emotional power. There’s a certain depth that takes the listener on a magnificent mental excursion that’s easily worth repeated listens.

Harpe/Syko drops on 12″ vinyl via Future Classic on September 11th and can be pre-ordered here. It will be available a week later, on September 18th, digitally as well. Just in case a Ninja co-sign isn’t enough, it’s also worth noting that Flume reposted this on Soundcloud earlier today–it certainly seems like the perfect track for him to remix or at least fit into one of the more atmospheric portions of his live sets.

[Electronic Bliss] Kenton Slash Demon – Harpe

The capacity for emotional power within an instrumental composition should never be underestimated–a sentiment interestingly, and perhaps ironically, shared equally between fans of electronic and classical music. In fact, it could be argued that undeciphered abstraction leaves more room for personal and spiritual connection to a song. This couldn’t be more evident on “Harpe,” the latest single from Danish production duo Kenton Slash Demon, which is also one of their first official releases as recent signees to Australian juggernaut Future Classic. The label’s roster already boasts one of the most diverse collections of pioneering artists (Flume, Chet Faker, George Maple, Ta-Ku, Hayden James, Jagwar Ma and the list goes on) and their latest addition proves no different.

“Harpe” spans nearly seven minutes utilizing a stuttering, psychedelically-altered vocal sample backed by atmospheric pads and a steady house tempo to completely engross the listener with a repetitiveness that, at least for me, evokes a feeling of unrelenting reincarnation. That groove hits an interlude of suspension before returning with even more intricate textures. It’s an absolute musical odyssey that simultaneously elicits euphoria and darkness in a way that’ll connect with you in ways few tracks can.

Looking back at Kenton Slash Demon’s Soundcloud page, it’s clear why Future Classic chose them as their next project. If you’re digging this, we’d also highly recommend giving their Skydancer EP a listen.

[NEW] Hayden James – Something About You (ODESZA Remix)

Hayden James
Something About You (ODESZA Remix)

Hayden James‘s “Something About You” was undoubtedly one of the best songs to come out in 2014–a gorgeously smooth cut featuring silky vocals from James himself alongside the always amazing, fellow-Future Classic member George Maple. The seemingly, and welcomingly, omni-present ODESZA have been teasing a remix of the jam both on social media and during live sets–today it has officially arrived.

In typical fashion, ODESZA truly make the track their own utilizing the vocals perfectly building into an absolutely beautiful eruption that simultaneously evokes deep emotions and makes you want to frolic in a field of feels. In a way, the talented duo are returning the favor after James’ fantastic 2014 rendition of “Say My Name.” Bask in this glorious tune above and keep your eye out for Hayden James in 2015–we caught him at Audio in San Francisco recently and were blown away by his set.

[Future/Chill] Flight Facilities – Heart Attack Feat. Owl Eyes (Snakehips Remix)

Flight Facilities
Heart Attack feat. Owl Eyes (Snakehips Remix)

For readers who have followed The Music Ninja over the past few years, there will undoubtedly be a great deal of familiarity to the sounds of UK based production duo, Snakehips. As a bona fide favorite among the staff, we have covered numerous releases by the PBR&B/electronic pair such as “Gone,” “Dímelo,” “Forever,” “On & On,” and “Wanderlust.”

Snakehips latest remix is a unique take on the original of another electronic duo, Flight Facilities. “Heart Attack,” which came out late last year, is an emotional tune that immerses the listener in a feeling of solitude thanks to the lyrical talents of the soulful Owl Eyes.

In their latest remix, Snakehips have done a remarkable job of matching the sentiments of the lyrics (But you’re so far away… Searching for a heart another world away // How far have I got to move… You’re all I need and now if you knew) with the feelings conveyed by the melody. Having kept with the theme of companionship, the remix maintains the subtlety and refine of the original while also creating a markedly familiar synth-based production in line with their previous works.

A reprieve from the constant wave of over-produced future bass, “Heart Attack” is a track music lovers will be playing on repeat for a few days upon first listen. Enjoy streaming the track above and find all of Snakehips’ work over on Soundcloud.

[Melt] Ta-Ku – Long Time No See (feat. Atu)

Ta-Ku
Long Time No See (feat. Atu)

Following Ta-Ku‘s Songs to Break Up To, the Australian artist of multiple mediums took some time away from music to express himself through other avenues, particularly stunning photography and hilarious Snapchats. Much to the delight of fans, Ta-Ku’s ready to craft sonic beauties once again with his upcoming, aptly-titled Songs to Make Up To. After the last stunning, JMSN and Sango-featuring single, “Love Again,” he’s back with another gem from the project this time teaming up with Atu, a master of downtempo, heart-wrenching production.

On “Long Time No See,” the two slow-jam connoisseurs draw you in with deeply emotional piano and a signature Atu vocal sample. When combined with steady head-nodding, hand-clapping percussion, the track fully immerses the listener into an unmatchably calm soundscape. Once you’ve been fully drawn in, a soothing bass vibration ties everything together melting away pain and stress.

Ta-Ku recently gave a TEDx talk in Sydney where he discussed his artistic journey and the reason for his hiatus from music. Unsurprisingly, Songs to Break Up To was written after a heartbreak in his own life leaving him at a loss for musical expression after its release. In his talk, he discusses how he coped with this by turning to other creative outlets before finally being ready to put his upcoming project together–it’s sounding like it’ll be well worth the wait. Songs to Make Up To drops on June 12th and can be pre-ordered now here.
