Lollapalooza 2016: Our Top Takeaways [Event Review]

lolla-1

As with any music festival, after Lollapalooza is over, it always takes us a few days to digest everything and snap back to reality. For locals, the festival serves as an escape within our own city. For outsiders, it provides them with a completely unique way to experience Chicago. The magic of Lollapalooza is simply unmatched, and despite a weather scare early on, Lollapalooza 2016 turned out to be just as memorable as years past. This year in particular will most likely stick out in the minds of many as it marked the 25th anniversary of the festival. Because of this, much of the weekend was filled with nostalgia as artists reflected on some of their past memories of playing the festival or of their ambitions to take the stage in Grant Park while growing up. For the first time ever, this year also added an additional day of festivities, kicking things off early on Thursday to commemorate the festival’s legacy. On the next few pages we’ve broken down some of our lasting impressions from Lolla 2016.

[House] JAHKOY – Still In Love (Digital Farm Animal Remix)

JAHKOY always manages to put out good music, no matter if it’s straight from his camp or by way of another. This time around it was by way of a remix from Digital Farm Animal, who absolutely crushed a flip of “Still In Love.” Their vibrant deep house take on it brings a fresh sound to a genre that’s not as hype as it once was. Digital Farm Animal are looking to change that here.

With this new version of “Still In Love” we get a strong melodic sound that is perfect for a club atmosphere. What makes this song better than other club records is that this one is great no matter what setting you find yourself in. It has that crossover, sort of poppy, vibe to it that makes it fit any where any time. Digital Farm Animal are forcing your hand here, as you’re going to feel the necessity to put this one on repeat throughout the weekend. We must warn you though, if you thought the original was hard to get out of your head, this one is doubly so.

[Future/R&B] JAHKOY – Odd Future

Odd Future

“Odd Future” is the latest original track from the Toronto vocalist JAHKOY. Produced by WondaGurl and Nova, this soulful R&B meets future concoction is the wind-down song you need to ease into the weekend. It has that Drake-esque vibe, a sort of mixture of sing-song and rap on top of an airy downtempo beat. For such a minimal production, it actually flows quite lively, and picks up at the end with a more upbeat percussion sequence that really concludes the track decorously.

JAHKOY has been continuously establishing as an act that can make it to the top. The artistry and vision are there, it’s just a matter of time before a ton of people start jumping ship to the JAHKOY ride. UMG Recordings released “Odd Future,” which means that it is up on iTunes for purchase. We got a copy, and we suggest you do too. Lastly, as stated on the artist’s Twitter, we can expect something soon by the name “TEMPTATIONS.” Be on the lookout!

[House] JAHKOY – Hold Your Hand

Hold Your Hand

Toronto’s JAHKOY brought another bipolar sound track to the table with the original “Hold Your Hand.” There’s so much going on in this song, it’s amazing. It’s like house, hip-hop, pop and indie-dance all had a baby together; this is what came of it. A beautiful, but upbeat production sets the stage for the vocal work that first comes as a more singer/songwriter style, then moves to a rap verse at the end. Fans of eclectic records just found what they were looking for. The great thing about “Hold Your Hand” is that it is balanced with its influences, not ranging too far out for picky genre-heads to not like it. Look out for JAHKOY to put out more great work in the future.

Let It Be

When sifting through SoundCloud to find new music, the best moment is to find a song that you can’t pinpoint a specific genre to because it is so creative. My latest discovery was JAHKOY. The Canadian jack-of-all-trades produces, sings, and song-writes tracks that combine influences from pop, dance, and even hip-hop.

His latest single to hit the Internet, “Let It Be,” is a true demonstration of this young producer’s artistic abilities. JAHKOY‘s slick bass quivers and shimmering synth melodies provide the perfect stage for his voice to shine above the rest. His lyrics are brisk like a hip-hop rhyme master while at the same time as catch as a pop singer. Overall, JAHKOY is an impressive talent to recently surface in music and definitely deserves the “follow” on Soundcloud because it seems like he is just getting started.
