Episode #76 includes singles from both alongside a diverse mix of genres spanning electro-soul, indie pop, far out hip-hop and forward-thinking house. Other personal favorites from this episode include a dreamy remix from Conrad Clifton, summer-ready cuts from GoldLink‘s new album, Nite Jewel‘s effortless latest single & Djemba Djemba‘s future house take on Jnthn Stein.

[NEW] Odesza – Light (feat. Little Dragon)

ODESZA
Light (feat. Little Dragon)

It feels like every week Odesza have exciting new material to set the interwebs ablaze–whether it be enormous remixes, releases through their Foreign Family Collective or even fan videos of yet-to-be-released songs from their acclaimed live sets. This week proves no different as the Seattle production duo announce the upcoming release of a deluxe edition of their 2014 album In Return. Along with that announcement, they let loose a brand new original track featuring the Swedish electro-pop geniuses of Little Dragon.

The unconventional, yet enticing, crooning of Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano feels like a natural pairing with the shimmering instrumentation of Odesza. “Light” slightly tones down the intense percussion we’re used to from the duo, though, rather gliding beautifully and relying more on the radiant elements of their sound. Even with a more stripped down approach, the chorus proves irresistible as Odesza inject just enough of the enormity we’ve come to expect from them. It’s a truly mesmerizing collaboration that we hope results in more new music between the two pioneering acts.

The deluxe edition of In Return is out on September 18th via Counter Records and can be pre-ordered here.

[Indie] Feed Me Jack – Twice (Little Dragon Cover)

’Feed Me Jack – Twice (Little Dragon Cover)’
’Feed Me Jack – Reelin’ In The Years (Steely Dan Cover)’

As they prepare to release their upcoming EP, Oakland-based Feed Me Jack put out a phenomenal collection of covers last night. With Little DragonSteely DanWeezer and more included, the 5-track project showcases Feed Me Jack’s experimental indie rock and versatile musicianship to perfection. As with all great covers, the songs are complete re-imaginations that take each song to unique and exciting places.

Their take on Little Dragon’s “Twice,” our personal favorite, starts similarly to the original utilizing a beautiful acoustic backing, but around the 1-minute mark expands on that initial melody falling into a blissful guitar jam. It’s the type of song that only gets better the longer you listen–after repeating the chorus it once again erupts into a gorgeously composed outro. Feed Me Jack’s take on Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years,” another stand-out, transforms the original into an airy, guitar-layered jam session mixed in with flawless horns. Add in some goofy ad-libs, and it captures FMJ’s breezy quirkiness making for a completely different listen than the classic original.

It’s interesting hearing a young band like FMJ, who’s musicianship gives them freedom to take on endless sonic endeavors, truly establishing a sound. It’s even more intriguing that they’re able to do so while covering other artists’ music. Feed Me Jack are currently working on originals for their next EP, which they expect to drop in August. Based on some of the experimentation we’re hearing on this project, we really can’t wait for what they have in store. You can pick up the full covers EP over at their Bandcamp page for free and check out our interview with them from a few months back here.

Klapp Klapp (Nosaj Thing remix featuring Future)

Swedish band, Little Dragonreleased their anticipated fourth studio album a couple days ago and it has already received quite a bit of critical acclaim. Building off that momentum, they released a brand new remix with a couple unlikely collaborators–experimental lo-fi producer Nosaj Thing and Atlanta’s auto-tuner Future

As expected, Nosaj strips down “Klapp Klapp,” a pretty upbeat song, into a beautifully layered and intricate cut that matches the relaxing vocals of Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano. Future makes his brief appearance at the 2:15 point and does a good job of keeping with the vibe although its still a bit of an unusual combination. This one’s perfect for late nights. Nabuma Rubberband is out now on iTunes.

[Synth/Indie-Pop] Little Dragon – Let Go

Let Go

We’ve been following Little Dragon‘s every move leading up to the release of their fourth official long player, and this morning the Swedish dance-poppers have unveiled a third single off of Nabuma Rubberband. “Let Go” is a slow burning slice of melodic pop, leaning on a stripped down, sultry Yukimi Nagano vocal and subdued percussion; which to the delight of their purist fans falls more in line with the minimal dance sound of their debut self-titled album than the sticky-sweet electro-bounce the world at large has fallen for. Regardless, this one will no doubt find its way into the hearts of Little Dragon fans both old and new with its beautiful instrumentation and obvious crossover shine. We simply can’t contain our collective excitement around here for the album’s official release date of May 13 and subsequent live tour, so if you happen to vacate one of the lucky cities on their next jaunt, we highly recommend you don’t skip on the chance to be whisked into a gorgeous Little Dragon live set. Little Dragon – Ritual Union (Virgin Magnetic Material Remix)

The experimental remix project of Virgin Magnetic Material, consisting of Shai Vardi from Tel Aviv, take the infectious fast-paced Little Dragon song “Ritual Union” and flip the beat for the remix. Although some may not be familiar with the group Little Dragon, listener’s should recognize the lead singer’s soft and haunting vocals from many of SBTRKT‘s singles featured on this site. Giving this already dope track a new texture and sound that appeals more to a slow-downed vibe. Slower and more ethereal, this atmospheric remix is a beautiful interpretation of the original.
