[Trap] Lunice – Steady Flexin

Steady Flexin

While EDM Trap has become increasingly saturated in 2013, artists like Lunice, of the pioneering duo TNGHT, continue to display the genre’s potential to bridge the gap between electronic music and hip-hop. The latest track from the Montreal-based producer, “Stay Flexin,” serves as a prime example of this synergy with its uniquely hard-hitting 808 percussion that begs for emcee accompaniment–a ScHoolboy Q verse would fit perfectly. This gem is part of LuckyMe’s advent calendar, which offers free downloads for every day of this month.  Peep above and, if you’re up for it, give a quick freestyle a try!

[Trap] TNGHT – Acrylics

It’s been way too long since we last heard anything new from trap duo TNGHT. Hudson Mohawke and Lunice clearly shared the same sentiments, dropping this monstrosity in preparation for their set at Coachella later this month. There’s plenty of adjectives that could be used to describe this track: filthy, smashing, mesmerizing, the list goes on. Just know that it’ll be in constant rotation from this day forward. Cop the single on iTunes, and prepare yourself for an epic 2013 from two of Kanye‘s favorite producers.

[Hip-Hop] Angel Haze & Lunice – Gimme That

Over the summer EDM trap-pioneering production duo, TNGHT, helped define an explosive subgenre with their self-titled EP and several massive mixes. Both members, Lunice and Hudson Mohawke, expressed their desire to reach out and work with rappers. Thus far, we have seen Mohawke work with several hip-hop acts, most notably Kanye West on Cruel Summer.

The Montreal-based half, Lunice, has also been hard at work producing for several up ‘n coming emcees. His latest release, “Gimme That,” features NYC’s Angel Haze, yet another example of a quality female artist in a genre that has traditionally lacked them. The trap influence on Lunice’s instrumental is evident through out with 808, kick-driven percussion and epic synth melodies. Haze delivers an absolute verbal assault continuing the compelling case for further collaboration between EDM trap and hip-hop.

“Gimme That” is part of Yours Truly’s “Songs from Scratch” series and serves as a great pick me up to get you over the Wednesday hump. Stream it below and head over to Yours Truly to watch a dope documentary on the making of this one.

[Hip-Hop] Captain Murphy – Shake Weight (TNGHT Version)

The mysterious Captain Murphy, best known for his work with Flying Lotus, is one of the first of likely many rappers to hop on an instrumental from Hudson Mohawke and Lunice‘s standout electro-trap TNGHT EP. On “Shake Weight,” which was tweeted out by HudMo earlier today, Murphy’s versatile vocals perfectly match the intensity and bounciness of “Bugg’n.” The TNGHT duo have already expressed a desire to work with hip-hop artists and this is a pretty cool glimpse into the potential collaboration across the genres.

Stream and download this high octane cut below and make sure to check out the TNGHT EP if you haven’t yet given it a listen.

[Trap/Hip-Hop] Flosstradamus – BANNED (Mix)

Last night, after being banned by the CPD from the Mad Decent Block Party in their hometown of Chicago, Flosstradamus dropped a 30-minute, groundbreaking monster of an electro-trap/hip-hop mix via their Twitter bringing us one step closer to the inevitable integration of the two styles. The Fool’s Gold duo incorporate a wide variety of the hardest hitting hip-hop tracks, from Juicy J‘s stripclub anthem “Bands a Make Her Dance” to Slim Thug’s classic verse from “Still Tippin” to Kanye West‘s “Mercy”(on which electro-trap producer Hudson Mohawke was actually credited with “additional instrumentation”), accompanied by the heaviest electronic sounds and percussion out.

Including some unreleased tracks from their upcoming album X☢ and drawing from a number of other notable producers in their niche, Flosstradamus has provided us with an unbelievable musical outline highlighting the collision course of these two genres. B⚠NNED, along with the recent release of the TNGHT EP and reemergence of artists like Juicy J and 2 Chainz, is just the beginning of a new brand of trap music that has the potential to be enormous. One of my favorite moments comes around the 22nd minute when they incorporate their “Pop That” remix to Major Lazer‘s “Original Don,” merging the dancehall-type vocals flawlessly with French Montana‘s anthem.

The first single from X☢ , “UNDERGR☢UND ANTHEM,” is due out on August 18th and the project is looking to be a milestone ushering in an exciting era for electronic music. This requires the highest volume and will likely induce raging upon pressing play. Shortly after releasing B⚠NNED the talented producers tweeted, “there’s something extra tight about giving out music this way.. directly to y’all from us. feels right.” Word up.
