After a month out of the studio, we had a ton going on during this week’s episode of TMN Radio. Co-host Dom is embarking on a new life journey and will be moving to London next week so we bid him farewell for now–opening and closing the show with London-inspired tracks. We also had special guest Still Woozy to premiere his incredible first solo single and share some of his wide-ranging inspiration.

Of course, there was plenty of new music to share as well featuring Tyler Hawkins, Bobby Nourmand, Odesza, Yaeji, Mac DeMarco, Kendrick Lamar & more!

Treasure Island 2016: 12 Must See Acts — SF 10/15-16 [Festival Preview]

culrt-fumaam8ayIf you’ve been following The Music Ninja over the last few years, you already know that Treasure Island Music Festival reigns atop our list of best music events in the Bay Area. Rounding out peak festival season, TIMF consistently avoids the repetitive lineups that plague competitors while offering an ideal environment for attendees worn out from over-crowded events. 2016 is an important year for the festival marking both its 10th anniversary and final year taking place on Treasure Island itself as a result of upcoming real estate development. Thankfully it will not be the end altogether for the SF staple, which will be relocating to a TBD destination come 2017 (the SF Chronicle even has a poll where you can vote on where it should be).

With those milestones in mind, Noise Pop have stepped up their already fantastic curation bringing what may be our favorite lineup to date. Our best advice would be to catch as many artists as the schedule permits, be prepared for the rain and stop by the Silent Disco. Although we know and love pretty much every artist on this weekend’s bill, we’ve curated our top picks for each day below. Hope to see some of you Ninjas on the island! Continue reading

40 Songs to Prepare for Sasquatch! 2016 [Festival Preview + Playlist]

Over the last few years, Memorial Day Weekend for us has become synonymous with Washington’s Sasquatch! Music Festival–you can take a look back at our review from last year to get a sense of just how much we love it. The 4-day event separates itself from other major festivals by offering a one-of-a-kind backdrop overlooking the Columbia River Gorge and being just far enough in the boonies that all attendees camp together. That combination makes for a more communal experience while offering some relief from common festival-goer complaints.

In its second year back to a 4-day bill, Sasquatch! presents one of its most unique lineups to date shedding light on local Seattle musicians early in the day while bringing the headliners everyone has come to expect (aside from The Cure!) to take on the evening performances. While late sets from the likes of Jamie xx, Disclosure and Major Lazer jump out as major electronic acts, the daytime seems more focused on indie rock / pop and hip-hop, which should fit a sunny day in the Gorge perfectly.

To help all our Sasquatch Ninjas prepare, we’ve put together a 40-song playlist highlighting 10 acts for each day of the festival. Whether or not you’ll be at the Gorge this year, we hope you discover some new artists in here–we certainly did in putting it together. If you do make it out, look for the dude with the most colorful shorts and come say what’s up!

Day 1

Lion Babe – Treat Me Like Fire (feat. Snakehips Remix)
Oh Wonder – Body Gold
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Can’t Keep Checking My Phone
Marcus Marr – Peacemakers
Flume – Smoke and Retribution (feat. Vince Staples)
Alina Baraz & Galimatias – Pretty Thoughts
Yeasayer – Silly Me
Todd Terje – Strandbar (disko)
Disclosure – Jaded
Chet Faker & Marcus Marr – The Trouble With Us

14 Unforgettable Sets from Outside Lands 2015 [Festival Review]

CoverIt’s been nearly a week since we first stepped into Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands, but with the return to the daily grind it feels like even longer for most of us. This year’s festival, yet another record-breaking one by attendance, featured all the amenities that make OSL special–amazing food, craft beers, a star-studded comedy lineup, the beautiful backdrop of Hellman Hollow and of course a top-notch bill of musical performances. With its rapid expansion came some growing pains as well, though, and our main gripe was the inaccessibility of the Heineken House, which featured some great DJs, due to overcrowding. At the same time, the greater depth of the lineup made the previously overlooked Panhandle stage the place to be and when the crowd came together at shows, the energy was unbelievable.

In the stupor that follows music festivals, it can be easy to allow your precious experiences to fade in the rearview of your memory bank, but there will always be sets that you’ll never forget. We’ve recounted 14 sets that have been stuck in our minds all week and also tried something a bit new with this review by asking random fans to review our favorite sets. If you were in attendance this year, we hope this brings you back and, if not, it might just make you want to check out OSL next year.

[Alternative] Mac DeMarco – I’ve Been Waiting For Her

Mac Demarco
I've Been Waiting For Her

Mac DeMarco’s been “Passing out Pieces,” as he would say, recently. Last week, he shared a fully instrumental compilation titled Some Other Ones, a pre-cursor to his upcoming, appropriately-titled LP Another One. Today, we get another single from the highly anticipated follow-up to Salad Days. On “I’ve Been Waiting For Her” sees Mac in prime form layering breezy guitar and nonchalantly soothing vocals. As the song closes you can hear a quirky modified guitar solos that brings to mind his early LPs. DeMarco’s sound will always have a timeless feel to it, even with its oddities, and his latest is definitely no exception.

Hit play above and let your mind wander to its happy place. Another One drops on August 7th–you can pre-order here.

[Alternative] Mac DeMarco – Another One

Mac DeMarco
Another One

Mac DeMarco‘s got a new mini-LP on the way and, after a breezy first single in “The Way You’d Love Her,”  today we get “Another One,” the title track from the project. This time around Mac goes the dreamy pop route with vintage synths and distant vocals. It’s a simple, yet layered, hazy melody that captures Mac’s wonderfully strange essence. The visuals, which you can check out below, are equally weird seeing Mac dance and sing on a beach wearing a Michael Jackson mask and t-shirt through out. As with all of Mac DeMarco’s music, this one’s headed straight to our summer playlist. Another One drops on August 7th and can be pre-ordered here.

[NEW] Mac DeMarco – The Way You’d Love Her

Mac DeMarco
The Way You'd Love Her

After the release of his critically-acclaimed Salad Days last year, Mac DeMarco toured pretty much non-stop spreading his infectious and delightfully strange brand of garage rock worldwide. After a brief touring hiatus in which he had a chance to spend some time in his Brooklyn studio, Mac brought us his first new tune of 2015 this morning along with the announcement of his summer tour and upcoming LP, Another One, due out on August 7th. “The Way You’d Love Her” picks up right where Salad Days left off with off-kilter, yet breezy, guitar licks accompanied by Mac’s distinct vocals. It’s a groovy and laid-back jam that arrives right in time for the summer sun. Enjoy above and check Mac’s extensive upcoming tour dates after the jump.  Continue reading
