[Event Preview + Playlist] Black Butter Records’ Official Movement Electronic Music Festival Afterparty Playlist

For Memorial Day Weekend in Detroit, Michigan, a significant portion of dance music enthusiasts will be going to one place and one place only – Movement Electronic Music Festival. The festival holds a lineup predominantly of underground top dogs such as Maceo Plex, Art Department, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler B2B The Martinez brothers, and more, but there are also some outsider picks thrown into the mix like Dog Blood, GRiZ, and of course DJ Snoopadelic (Snoop Dogg’s DJ project). No matter who you see, Movement is sure to be one of the top events to attend over the holiday weekend, but why should you have to stop when the festival ends? Why not just party straight through until you’re early morning flight on Tuesday?

Well, Black Butter Records has your back because the UK label and event brand will be hosting the official after party for Movement Electronic Music Festival at the Populux on May 25th. Two of the label’s favorite acts, Gorgon City and Kidnap Kid, will be leading this party with their signature dance stylings with some serious support from Dantiez Saunderson and Loud Luxury. But, Black Butter Records couldn’t stop there, so the UK tastemaking masterminds decided to commission a guest appearance from house aficionado MK who will be going B2B for a special set with Hot Natured’s Lee Foss.

To spice up all your pregame action, we ninjas have put together a playlist of tracks from the event’s lineup to give those not sold yet that push over the tipping point. Tickets for the event are available here!

’Gorgon City – Here For You ft Laura Welsh’
’Go All Night ft. Jennifer Hudson (Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record)’
’Gorgon City – Sky High’
’Jessie Ware – You & I (Forever) (Kidnap Kid Remix)’

[Get Pumped] Mysteryland USA 2015 Pre-Fesitval Playlist

This year will mark the second year of Mysteryland’s extension over to American soil after the festival broke ground last year on the legendary ground of Bethel Woods, NY – the same site where Woodstock took place in 1969. During its inaugural year, Mysteryland boasted a lineup headlined by Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Nicky Romero, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Moby, and many more along with showing the world that their line up would be one of the most diverse to date. Outside the bass heavy “The Boat,” Vinyl Only stage, and underground-drenched Spiegeltent, Mysteryland made it known that their festival was more than just music but a culture and arts festival as well. Just weeks away from the kick off of round two, their lineup for 2015 illustrates that Mysteryland USA intends to make this year their biggest on yet and just catalog another testament to their evolving perception of the electronic dance music landscape.

We’re already getting our logistics in place and bags packed to make the trek into the upper section of the state of New York with Memorial Day quickly approaching on the calendar, and to be honest, its incredibly difficult to say where we will be spending our time at the festival due to the breadth of talent across all stages. The underground’s most revered pioneers – Maceo Plex, Josh Wink, and Richie Hawtin – will be opening the Campus Circus on Friday along with A-Trak, GTA, and Tropakillaz, which is a tenacious opening lineup. For Saturday, Empire of the Sun, Kygo, and Porter Robinson earn the headlining duties, but with Madeon and Robin Schulz warming up the Main Stage, it is sure to be one for the books. On the last day, Diplo and Dillon Francis – two of the biggest clowns in dance music – will be the spectacles for everyone to end the night with. For those looking to stray from the main stage, the beauty of Mysteryland’s lineup this year is that everyone is bound to find somewhere and something they like whether they’ve heard of them before or not.

Like I said before, we haven’t even begun to plan out where to go because of the schedule conflicts that are about to arise with all the incredible talent at this year’s festival. Outside of the festival’s talent, its going to be a weekend of creative expression, self-discovery, and meeting new festival friends that we honestly can’t wait for. To get yourself in the Mysteryland mindset, check out the TMN Mysteryland USA playlist we have crafted to get yourself even more excited for your Memorial Day this year at the Bethel Woods farm. We pieced together an encompassing playlist featuring Porter Robinson, Maceo Plex, Griz, Anna Lunoe, and more to give you a full picture and precursor to what is about to occur at Mysteryland USA. Also, if you’re looking for last minute tickets, grab them here before the festival begins on May 22nd.

[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo #23

I apologize for the delay with this weeks dojo, but we’re coming at you with so many huge hits this week that i’m sure it will make up for it. Jumping right into it, Team Bayside High takes on the task of remixing a truly classic dance hit, “Make You Sweat” better known as “Everybody Dance Now”. They do all the right things to this remix, with several different trap builds and drops, emphasizing the famous lyrics or their own take on the melody. Next up is the masked man himself, UZ, remixing Birdy Nam Nam. You may have seen this posted earlier this week as part of the Birdy Nam Nam Remix EP. This track is incredibly funky with great drumwork throughout. Butch Clancy continues his Trap Tuesday series with this weeks “Dopeboy”, my favorite trap track of his so far. With huge bass and bells, this is real gangster trap shit to rattle the trunk as you’re driving through the hood. Heroes X Villains, a name who we see far too little of teases us with the full preview of their remix of “Jah No Partial”. Even though they don’t release as frequently as others, every track is fire, and this track proves they are worth the wait. A couple weeks ago, I told you to keep an eye on Snails in 2013, and so far he has lived up to that hype, releasing this massive heavy hitter, as well as a killer dubstep track this week alone. Trap Dojo regular Ookay is back, having just signed to Borgore’s label. “Hey Freak is filled with blazing high synths and some serious footwork set to make you kick up a storm. RaceCarBed just released a new EP this week filled with deep basslines, and oozing with purped out swag. Click the “Buy” link to get the whole EP. Grandtheft, who you probably recognize from his insane collaboration with Diplo kills this remix of “Tuna Melt” that will have you saying “Damn son, where’d you find this sandwich?”. While Dubstep is still not an old genre by any means, there are still a number of tracks that you can consider classics, one of which is “Sweet Shop” by Doctor P. While its always tough to remix a classic, Big Makk keeps it fairly simple, adding some drums to the notoriously high pitched drop, while chopping up the synths only enough to really trap it out, before going really hard in the second half.

A few tracks later, which are all great, but I wont mention because this post is already getting out of hand, comes the cool down section of our dojo training. I never thought I would be putting Justin Beiber on the dojo, but the way this is chopped and screwed into a Future Trill ballad had me playing this one on repeat. Lastly, Huglife seems to have created a subgenre of his own: Indie-Trap. This track shows what i really love about Huglife, whether he’s producing big-room bangers, or remixing indie coffee shop tracks into some chill love trap, its always above par.

Looking Back: Non-2009 Experimental/Pop/Indie Songs Playlist Vol.2

Electric President -S/T

ElectricPresidentRepresenting Jacksonville, Florida Ben Cooper and Alex Kane are creators of the softly electric indie pop duo Electric President. Their first album S/T is considered one of the greatest collections of electronica songs from this decade with amazing playful soft songs like Insomnia and Ten Thousand Lines. There music sounds like The Postal Service, Styrofoam and Anticon’s cLOUDDEAD.

B. Fleischmann.

bfleischmannThere is something very calming about Austrian musician Bernhard Fleischmann‘s “Buzz” from the solo album A Choir of Empty Beds. Although the percussions have a fast pace, the over extended synthesized melodies soften the over all tempo of the song. His drumming background is transparent in his music, creating a fusion of percussion and electronics.

The Never

The Never MusicI do not think many people have heard of these guys, a shame really. The Never is made up of Noah Smith and brothers Jonny and Joah Tunnell. Based in Chapel Hill, NC on Trekky Records Label, The Never make melodic rock and pop music. In 2006, the band released “Antarctica: A Storybook Record,” a concept album accompanied by a fully illustrated 50-page storybook written and painted by Noah Smith – last.fm

Hot Hot Heat

Hot Hot Heat

While they are not remotely obscure anymore, I remember listening to Goodnight Goodnight for the first time and be blown away by how different they sounded to anything that was playing on the radio in 2005. Songs like these were the reasons for me to start The Music Ninja. Like I have said before I was not into the whole “music blog/music discover” up until a 2 year ago and I am using the site and posts like these to show people amazing songs that are not being talked about anymore just because its not the latest and greatest. Hot Hot Heat is an indie rock band from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and plan to release their next album in 2010.

Firekites

firekites musicThe Xx remind me a lot of Firekites, without being too minimalists. A good combination of dim guitar notes, keyboard, percussion and layers of voices make “Same Suburb Different Park” a such ‘feel-good’ song. A couple of glitches sprinkled here and there just barely make it into the electronica category, other wise it will just be considered acoustic folk pop.

Good Running Music: The Ultimate, Random and Incomplete Playlist To Get Off Your Ass

the-music-ninja-running-muisic-2009

Trying to catch up to your new years resolution? Tired of always listening to the same tunes every time you work out? Here is an unfinished selection (more posts like these will follow) of songs that will get you off your butt and on the mood for working out. I try to run a couple of miles every other day as I catch up with all the recommendation I receive at blas at themusicninja dot com and I have found that Fort Minor’s The Raising Tied is pretty much the best motivational album to listen to when I work out. If you enjoy the first 2 songs I urge you to buy the entire CD, you will not be disappointed! This list is obviously biased as I enjoy Fast-rock, hip/hop and trance when I go out running. I tried to keep it balanced and non-gendered specific. Some is very old, some is very new. I read a couple of forums and websites that runners recommended songs and I believe I created a pretty awesome list. But like always, I leave it to you to be the judge.
