[Soul] Jesse Boykins III – Earth Girls

Jesse Boykins III
Earth Girls

Compared to his modern contemporaries, Jesse Boykins III stands head and shoulders above the rest and has a firm grasp on the title of ‘most talented male vocalist’. Taking up the mantle left open by the likes of MusiqSoulchild, JB3’s releases are the blueprint, the vehicle to, and representation of soul music in 2016. Pulling from an eclectic array of themes such as neo-soul, R&B, reggae, hip-hop, and jazz, Boykins has mastered the feat of flowing interchangeably across musical realms. Further, his success and assimilation into each of these genres leaves listeners wondering if he is redefining them all.

Following up a wildly success 2014 LP titled Love Apparatus, Jesse Boykins III has unleashed his latest album August 1st. At first listen, BARTHOLOMEW stands up against its predecessor and will certainly age well by touching on classic themes throughout. While the album has features from the likes of Noname, Little Simz, Willow Smith, Syd, Mick Jenkins and others, his best work is done on a solo piece. The standout track of the collection, “Earth Girls” also serves as the introduction to BARTHOLOMEW. Playing softly into existence with an emotional piano loop, Boykins’ unmistakable voice harmonizes the lines of the chorus before leading into the ballad that is verse one.

Jesse Boykins III’s full length work BARTHOLOMEW can be downloaded via WeTransfer here. Lucky readers living in New York will also get a chance to see the album performed with his live band The Beauty Created at the Brooklyn Bowl on August 17th –  tickets can be found here while they last.

[Chill] Bob Marley – Waiting In Vain (RÆVE Feat. JahSon Cover)

Bob Marley
Waiting In Vain (RÆVE Ft. JahSon Cover)

Every blogger worth his salt has heard at least four hundred Bob Marley covers or remixes in their day. As you can see, it’s very easy for the quality ones to get lost in the mix. And even if they are good, they usually aren’t too creative. However, RÆVE & JahSon are here to flip the script with their own interpretation of “Waiting In Vain”. JahSon lays down an incredible cover of the Marley classic, while RÆVE does the rest with his own blend of tropical sounds and house beatwork. As the winter months draw close, expect the Ninja team to keep this one in heavy rotation.

I saw Tarantino’s EPIC new movie Inglorious Bastards and I recommend it to EVERYONE! It is so nice to see Tarantino’s classic suspension driven dialog style done to perfection. No bullshit, its a great movie! With that said here is a reggae/techno/electronic remix with particularly calming acoustic breaks in between.

Looking Back: at Cage the Elephant

cage_elephant

On June 23rd of 2008, the band Cage the Elephant from Bowling Green, Kentucky, released their self-titled debut album, Cage the Elephant with their single “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked” dwelling inside UK Single Charts previous to the albums release.

Although I do not remember when was the first time I came across this song, “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked”‘s catchy lyrics quickly stayed with me until I was able to search for songs that matched the few lyrics I had remembered. Apart from finding out about Cage the Elephant, I also came across a reggae remix very fitting to the songs lyrical flow. The reggae remix gives it a more soul and sincere feel to the lyrics social commentary on the darker aspects of life.

Make sure you check out their self-title album Cage The Elephant or their myspace. You can also see their music video here
