Outside Lands 2016: 13 Acts To Catch Before 4 [Event Preview]

As Outside Lands approaches every year, there’s a unique buzz around San Francisco. Between those frantically searching for tickets, hashing out set conflicts, proclaiming excitement or proudly boycotting, the City’s biggest festival is on locals’ minds this week. For the last 5 years we’ve watched Another Planet Entertainment’s crown jewel grow along a similar trajectory as the Bay Area–rapidly rising in popularity (and price). Even with the ever-changing landscape that surrounds it, Outside Lands maintains a dedication to quality music, comedy and food in 2016. The lineup sticks to the tried and true formula of local / up ‘n coming acts, the years’ current headliners and a rare performance from a star of the past.

While we’d be happy to harp some more on how awesome Anderson .Paak, Rufus Du Sol or LCD Soundsystem are, we thought we’d take this opportunity to introduce all our Bay Area Ninjas to some acts they might fall in love with for the first time this weekend at Outside Lands. We know how hard it is to get your crew moving, particularly in SF, but we think these artists make accelerating your pre-game well worth it. Hope to catch some of you Ninjas out in Hellman Hollow!

Day 1

Make It Funky DJs (Heineken House, 12-1:30PM)
For the most prompt attendees, we’d recommend kicking off your weekend at the Heineken House with our friends from Make It Funky. Over the last 3 years, the DJ collective have established themselves as a staple of San Francisco nightlife. If you haven’t yet been to one of their events, their set in the Heineken House should serve as the perfect introduction to their funk/disco vibes and get you dancing from the jump. – Ash

Marian Hill (Twin Peaks, 12:45-1:30)

’Marian Hill – One Time’

Marian Hill is the cleverly titled Philly-based band consisting of Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol. While they haven’t been on the scene long, the band makes up for short-term fame in their long-term chemistry – having performed together since middle school. Since gaining notoriety behind the catchy “One Time” in early 2014, Marian Hill has been putting together jazzy-electronic tracks at a solid pace. Their debut album, ACT ONE, is out now and well worth a listen. – Dom P.

Wet (Sutro, 2:30-3:20)

’Wet – It’s All in Vain’

While riding the wave to fame behind a hipster following, Wet has taken the back roads to success, allowing their vast internet following to shower them with (well deserving) praise behind early bedroom productions. Since putting out the 2013 melodic “I Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl”, the Wet trio has signed to a major label and toured nationally. Recently reemerged from their production studio in the wooded thickets of Hadley, Massachusetts, Wet dropped their debut album Don’t You and will be certainly gaining even more followers after their OSL performance. – Dom P.

Vulfpeck (Panhandle, 2:55-3:35)

’Vulfpeck – Back Pocket’

It’s unlikely you’ll see any performance quite like Vulfpeck’s this weekend. The funk/soul band take a fully improvisational approach to songwriting resulting in a catalogue of epic, at times comedic, jams that are morphed and built on during live performance. Don’t let their light-hearted approach fool you, though, Vulfpeck are truly gifted musicians who involve the audience in their show at every opportunity. – Ash Continue reading

JR JR – Gone (The Knocks Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

JR JR
Gone (The Knocks Remix)

Detroit indie-pop duo JR JR have had quite the 2015. Their self-titled album, which dropped in September, feels like their most polished work to date proving cohesive both sonically and in its lyrical content. “Gone,” the project’s lead single, exemplifies that refinement striking a flawless balance between inspirational and downright addicting. Seeing as JR JR have found themselves in regular rotation with the TMN staff, we’re beyond excited to be bringing you a remix of their hit single from fellow-Ninja favorites The Knocks.

The Knocks have been seemingly everywhere this year as well starting with the release of their So Classic EP which has been followed by numerous stellar remixes and the first singles from their upcoming debut album. Although more electronic in sound than JR JR, the Brooklyn duo similarly toe the line of mainstream without sacrificing a drop of integrity. While The Knocks’ recent originals fall squarely in the realm of electro-pop, their take on “Gone” sees them flexing their versatility crafting a massive bass-house tune. Contrasting vastly from the original’s playful sensibility, The Knocks’ re-imagination is fueled by a massive, brooding bass line that brings to mind their recent collaboration with Alex Metric and takes the song from a sunny summer day to a club dance floor. Kick your Friday off right with this one above–you can buy JR JR’s 2015 album here.

[Groove] Sofi Tukker – Drinkee (The Knocks Remix)

SOFI TUKKER
Drinkee (The Knocks Remix)

The Knocks have easily been one of the most prolific acts in dance music over the last couple years–putting out an amazing EP in So Classic, touring constantly and keeping fans engaged with a steady stream of infectious remixes. As 2016 approaches, they don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Their debut album is on the way while their record label, HeavyRoc Music, has been chugging out jams perfectly in line with The Knocks’ diverse sound.

New York-based duo Sofi Tukker are their latest signees releasing the first single from their upcoming debut EP, “Drinkee,” a couple weeks ago. With organic backing percussion, a deep guitar/bass-driven groove and catchy vocals, it’s an endlessly addicting tune and, unsurprisingly, the perfect canvas for a remix from The Knocks. Rather than change the vibe of the song, The Knocks choose to accentuate and extend the original’s danciest grooves with fantastic results. Get lost in this one above.

[Festival Review] Life on the Incline: Sasquatch!, the Gorge and the Hill’s Eternal Serenity

17496069434_2c6a933028_oThere’s nothing quite like the sensation of sitting sideways atop the slope of the Gorge Amphitheater’s hill at Sasquatch! Music Festival overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. Add entrancing music to a background that no picture or piece of art could ever do justice; and, at that intersection, you’ll find the happy place Squatchers look forward to all year. The so-far-past picturesque backdrop sets the tone for the festival but, with arguably one of its best lineups yet, was a far cry from Sasquatch’s only attraction this year. Rather, the main stage’s slope served as the much-needed anchor after a dance party at the Chupacabra tent or Big Foot stage—a place to lie, head up or down, and absorb the collective consciousness of thousands of equally inspired concertgoers.

Music festivals have become such chaotic events and Sasquatch! is, certainly not an exception, but it’s that same comfort felt on the hill that permeates throughout the entire campground. No matter what you’re going through or how you’re feeling, the hill will take your emotional state to serenity, where it belongs.

18009447496_4d9cd9882f_oWords, photos and songs really can’t do justice to just how incredible the Squatch is but we’ve done our best to recap, from our perspective, the musical highlights from the 4 days. For those of you who were there, we hope this brings you back even if just a little bit and for those who weren’t, well, you’re going to want to be there next year after peeping our recap.

The Knocks
Collect My Love ft Alex Newell

With their EP release around the corner, The Knocks have dropped yet another dance-floor ready single.  Continuing in the spirit of a full retro-revival, “Collect My Love” has a pulsing bassline and melodic piano, which combined with the soulful vocals of Alex Newell bring to mind some of the great vocalists and artists of the disco era. We’ve now heard four of the five tracks from the So Classic EP and it’s safe to say it’ll be one of the strongest indie dance releases of the year. [Disco-House] The 1975 – Girls (The Knocks Remix)

The 1975
Girls (The Knocks remix)

Oh boy, do we love when remix duties are symbiotically thought out rather than the product of two talent agencies trying to highlight their respective artist du jour. So for us, it was a match made in indie heaven when production duo The Knocks took on the task of reinvigorating Manchester lo-fi garage-poppers The 1975 and their single “Girls” (which comes as part of their debut self-titled album) into a scooting clubland anthem. After being called upon for official remixes to the likes of indie stalwarts like HAIM, Of Monsters and Men, Grouplove, Foster the People and Two Door Cinema Club it was high time that they were called upon to work some of their big-room disco shimmer onto an emotive and dreamy tune. The Knocks’ take “Girls” to new heights with airy synth stabs, and a very nice play by pitching down Matthew Healy’s super recognizable croon and folding it back in with the original vocal track.  Expect to hear this one in many a disc-jockey’s set this season, and be ready for the full release on November 11.
