Every Time I hear a new She & Him song I always wonder if I consider myself a fan of their music.

To be honest, I am still undecided. What I am sure of however, is that Zooey Deschanel is a total sweetheart. She is captivating, both on and out of screen and no one can deny her talents as an actress and musician. So why am I not in love? A couple of their songs contain an incredible array of ‘feel good’ melodies that are hard to resist. One of their most popular songs “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” is too a personal favorite. Yet for some reason I cannot easily digest most of their songs. I thought long and hard about this and I came to the sad realization that her vocals, as charming as I want to perceive them, just don’t do it for me. I am not saying she’s a bad singer, because she is far from it, but there is something a little off every time I hear her sing. Perhaps I am not a fan of her style of singing than her actual voice.

What do you think? Do you think Zooey is a little off at times? Or are my ears the ones that need checking?

I completely agree with you, and have felt that way for a long time. As much as I love Zooey, Ive wanted to like them since the first time I heard Volume 1, but it just never really clicked for me

I am on the opposite side – Vol 1 was one of the best albums of that year and I still play it now and then…

I actually saw Zooey and M. Ward in concert before I listened to the album (actually before they were officially known as She & Him) and I have to say that her performance forever made me love their music. Live, her vocals can not be denied, and her voice gave her a stage presence that just couldn’t be ignored (the whole time I thought Ella, but twisted).

That being said, on the album this never completely translated for me, but even so, I have to say that they are still of my favorites if just as a reminder of how great it was to hear her sing on stage.
