[NEW] M.I.A Born Free Music Video [NSFW]

Whether the new M.I.A. Born Free Music Video is a social commentary on humanity’s natural tendencies for violence and segregation .. or simply another stab at gingers, the video definitely demonstrates M.I.A.’s much darker side. Directed by French Romain Gavras, produced by a company called elnino.tv and just released 10 hours ago, I am sure that by the end of the day everyone will have their own opinion of it. While I did not enjoy the low quality mp3 of Born Free that has been circulating on the music blogosphere in the last couple of days… I completely love the video for its realism and intensity, although not even sure what it all really means. I do not want to say the video is “controversially pushy” but its definitely not what we are used to seeing from M.I.A.

I feel like all this is, is putting red-heads (an exclusively White group) in a place that has been historically reserved for racial or religious minority groups…think Jews in Nazi Germany; or Black Americans pre Civil War. The song itself seems to be talking about being “born free”, so being an ethnic minority born in a free country yet still being treated like a second class citizen.

It may also be saying that a penchant for revolution, defiance and violence is not something that is innate but something that is socialised in groups through their mistreatment and need to be accepted and treated as equals by society.

Add some mines and crazy violence, and you have this M.I.A video.

It’s all very reminiscent of that Clive Owen movie, Children of Men. You should check that out.

MIA supports some of the world’s most ruthless terrorists (the Tamil Tigers).

If she’s so against violence, she should stop funding it.

I am sorry, the clip and the song are a total mess. The video is a rippoff of 1971 Peter Watkins’ movie Punishment park, except here all is based on violence and spectacular effects, it is absolutely empty. And MIA, I loved her first two albums so much, this song is absolutely awfull. All of this has the political impact of a che guevara tshirt. Mia says she doesn’t want to talk about money because she got it, apparently she needs more: viva la revolucion!

This is an eye opener to the discrimination and violence that “gingers,” like those of other color and cultural differences, are experiencing in our world. This video appears to be setting a political undertone that it is time society stepped up equal and civil rights for this and other minority groups in todays world. If you don’t think this type of violence is happening to our Hispanic culture in the southwest (i.e., Arizona), you are fooling yourself.

It was incredibly well shot and produced to say the least but I felt it they just went too far ie. by blowing them up at the end. The premise of the video was just ridiculous. It is a very good way of building massive amounts of buzz though. The directors video for Stress was better in my opinion as I’ve seen stuff like that actually happen in Belgium.

I think this video illustrates the very basic human capacity for arbitrary violence and hatred. At first, the premise of killing red-head people seems completely ridiculous and implausible; however, then we remember equally ridiculous and implausible genocidal crimes of the past (haulocast, etc.) and we remember just how dark and human nature is. We live in a fallen world with fallen souls.

Is the point of this music video to discriminate against people with red/orange hair? Or is it a fight against the discrimination that occurs in the world? Either way, it wasn’t very well done. If it is made to discriminate against “gingers”, GIVE IT UP. How different are they from brunettes, blondes, or people with black hair? Many people have fought against discrimination against specific minorities for many years, and this music video is a step backwards. How can we expect children, as well as adults, to be accepting of all people, when we have shit like this going around? And to top it off, this woman is a mother. No child should have to be raised by a mother who would support the killing of minorities. But hey, for all we kow, it could be advocating against discrimination, in which case it should have used real footage, rather than hopping on the bandwagon with the prejudice against people with red hair. Wait to go M.I.A, you’ve really outdone yourself this time.

A fantastic video. MIA as always trying something different musically. And the video is simply fantastic. It reminds me of the Rage Against The Machine videos when politically charged music videos actually were politically charged, unlike the emo bullshit of My Chemical Romance and the trash Green Day have been churning out recently.

Completely messed up. She must have been high because she took the ginger joke to a hole new level of insanity. There should be some form of punishment for this, in a way this is a form of racism.

this video shows an example of how other groups of minorities are treated with violence much worse than what MIA tried to show us. forget about minorities it can be anyone in any country; homosexuals, children, women, blacks or even whites! it shows how ruthless we can be.. wow great job opening our eyes and getting us alarm of what is actually going on in our pathetic world today, stupid governments are not doing enough to help those in needs and to stop those who promote violence, i mean look at Red Cross, they got caught stealing blood i mean what organization can we turn to, to donate money or blood without thinking its going to somewhere and something worthless! this video ain’t lame its the truth of what human beings are capable of doing to each other, beating the crap out of other humans and putting humanity on the line…

MIA did a fantastic job on portraying the stupidity of racial violence. I absolutely hated the violent nature of the video..and that’s the point. We all should hate it. Throughout history, we have done far worse. Using the “gingers” as the object of hatred was genius (though I’m not sure if South Park didn’t come up with it first). It shows how shallow and pointless racism really is, yet it is exactly what people have done for years: torture and kill people over nothing more than a color. Bravo MIA
