[Indie] SoKo – I Thought I Was An Alien + Video

French singer-songwriter SoKo has just released the video for ‘I Thought I Was An Alien’, a collaboration with Spike Jonze. Shot entirely on an iPhone, the video is a hazy love story with a sci-fi twist, which complements the track perfectly. Sweet wistful vocals and gentle guitar show off SoKo’s raw talent, and will leave the listener anticipating the February release of her record, ‘I Thought I Was An Alien’.

[Indie] Florence + The Machine – Lover To Lover

20111031-211659.jpg

Acclaimed songstress Florence Welch (and her Machine, of course) is preparing to release her much-anticipated sophomore album, ‘Ceremonials’. Stand-out track ‘Lover To Lover’ features Welch’s mind-blowing vocals as usual, and lyrics on the sub jet of salvation mirror the heavy gospel sound of the song. ‘Lover To Lover’ has the potential to be massive, and with Florence’s ever-growing popularity, it most certainly could be.

Cali psych-folk trio Megafaun have been around for a while, having played together in various incarnations since the mid-90s before forming the band in 2007. Since then, they’ve put out 4 records, including this year’s ‘Megafaun’, an intriguing blend of rock, folk, country and psychedelia, including highlight track ‘Kill The Horns’. A quietly powerful ballad, ‘Kill The Horns’ has a certain star quality that could make it everyone’s favourite new track.

[Live] Benjamin Francis Leftwich + Daughter + Olfar

20111025-225749.jpg

Exeter’s tiny Cavern was packed with adoring fans of both Benjamin Francis Leftwich and the support acts. First up were Olfar, a boy/girl duo who specialise in intimate folk. In their brief set, tracks such as ‘The Liar’s Daughter’ and the beautiful ‘Haul Me In The River’ crackled with intensity and got the crowd going.

They were followed by the incredible Elena Tonra, AKA Daughter, one of the UK’s rising indie stars. Despite the venue’s occasional sound problems, Tonra put on a tremendous showcase of her talents. Her performance of ‘Run’ was breath-taking, and cemented her reputation as a great live act.

And finally, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, the main attraction of the evening, took to the stage and wowed the crowd. Playing a selection of tracks from his album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snow Storm’, as well as a cover of Springsteen’s ‘Atlantic City’, Leftwich’s voice seemed even more bewitching than on record.

These are three of the hottest talents in the UK at the moment. If you get the chance to see them now before they hit the big time, grab it with both hands.
