DANNY BROWN & MNDSGN
SWEENEY SONG

Already riding high off his critically acclaimed album, Old, Danny Brown literally had no reason to release any more music this year. But here we are, and boy are we glad we found this. Technically this track isn’t new, but more an unreleased gem. Unsurprisingly, the eccentric Detroit emcee effortlessly shreds apart this ominous Mndsgn instrumental that sounds like it was ripped straight out of the Twilight Zone.

“Sweeney Song” will be featured on the upcoming Classic Drug References Vol. 1 box set, and you can learn more about the song’s inception from Sweeney Kovar, who used to run the now defunct Classic Drug References blog:

Danny was my longshot for this project. By the time I got moving on this he’d already signed with Fool’s Gold and was about to drop XXX, which would establish him as one of the fiercest MC’s out. I emailed and DM’d to no avail. One day I decided to try something really crazy and picked up the phone and called him. The stars were aligned and a rapper actually answered his phone. In all of two minutes he agreed to cut a track. I emailed him a .zip of beats I’d culled from the homies and about a week later I got a sendspace link entitled “SWEENY SONG.” He had taken a Mndsgn beat and absolutely ripped it to shreds. It’s been so long since he cut it that it now sounds like vintage Danny to me, which of course I love. I fixed the typo in the title and ran with it.

Set to release on November 25th, the compilation will contain three 7″ records featuring Danny Brown, BluKnxwledgeQuelle Chris, Ras G, and more. Also included will be a zine which will have exclusive interviews from Mr. Porter and A$AP Yams. Make sure to grab yourself a pre-order of the project here, and also check out the ingenious interactive video for Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone,” which also features a cameo from Danny Brown among other TV personalities.
