It has been over a year since Jesse Lortz and Kimbery Morrison disbanded their beautiful folk project, The Dutchess and the Duke in fall 2010. The separation was disheartening, as their raw, honest emotions coming through their music was so easy to relate to, especially during live performances. Still, with talks about Jesse starting a solo project it seem like there was still light at the end of the tunnel.

The wait was over last month (June 2011), as Case Studies released’The Eagle, Or The Serpent”. A much dark and somber track than what I was anticipating, a clear new direction from The Dutchess & The Duke yet the singing and rich instrumentation were reminiscent of the earlier days. It wasn’t until today, hearing “Lies” that I fell more comfortable with the project. While still soft and slow, “Lies” is much lighter, catchier track and opens up the range to what we can expect on The World Is Just A Shape To Fill The Night.

The World Is Just A Shape To Fill The Night is out 8/16 via Sacred Bones.
