[Music Video] Samuel Proffitt – Глубина (Depth) ft. Naadia

We’ve come to know Samuel Proffitt very well through his steadfast acceptance of the somber. With the recent release of The Grey Notebook, he’s managed to explore it even further. “Depth”, the final song on the EP, beautifully brings together the heavenly voice of Russian vocalist Naadia with a lone piano bestrewn with waves of reverb and a haunting atmosphere layered with intangible emotional weight. Samuel strove for a simple, yet necessary message in this video, and he details it in his premiere with Rolling Stone Russia by stating:

It’s time that we move past this “us versus them” ideology and realize that Russia, and its culture, is beautiful, profound, and full of feeling. The Russian people are the same as we are: loving, compassionate, and imaginative. They create extraordinary works of art, music, and literature, so to write them off because of preconceived notions and a politically charged atmosphere would only serve to further cement this ever-growing close-mindedness.

This sentiment needed now more than ever. Samuel Proffitt’s wish is to unify, and getting the chance to glimpse across the globe in a dazzling display such as this can show us all that we’re much more alike than we think.

To understand Samuel Profitt is to understand sadness. Now you may be wondering, “How is that good?” It’s simple. Samuel’s music maintains a level of genuine emotion that isn’t afraid to touch on complex and difficult events from his past. One example of this in particular is his work with Josh Jacobson on the heartrending Andre. It isn’t frail. It isn’t fearful. It’s accepting what has happened in order to make sense of what will come.

I don’t want things to end this way / You’ve become another part of me / A new horizon here to stay

“Sladky Pt. 2” finds a similar plane while enlisting the always terrific Khai to bolster a message of hope. This pairing of longing lyrics and graceful production already have given us an enticing look into what to expect from Samuel Proffitt’s upcoming EP, The Grey Notebook. There’s a refreshing sense of self awareness throughout Samuel’s projects, and that’s the exact sort of manner that makes for authentic and engaging music.

When life shakes you to the core, sometimes the best method of working through it is to create something beautiful. Samuel Proffitt and Josh Jacobson have finally joined forces to do exactly that. “Andre” is first and foremost a remarkable tribute to a fallen friend, but it also stands strong as an exceptional coalescence of troubled but sincere writing paired with dazzling production.

In only three and half minutes, Samuel and Josh capture your attention and your heart, and it’s driven by a moment in time that we all will experience at some point. “Andre” is more than a song. Andre is a life, and, just like this life, you’ll want to hold onto this song closely. Despite an initially grave message, we can (and do) later find hope and solace in knowing that Andre will never be forgotten because of these two.
