Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 20]

Hello ninjas, and welcome to Sunday Night Soul Volume 20. We embarked on this journey exactly 5 months ago with the goal of finding only the best tunes the internet had to offer. What started off as a fairly modest effort, has now grown substantially to the monstrosity you see here (and we mean “monstrosity” in the most loving way possible). We’re proud to see how the field has expanded to include various different soundscapes, increasingly pushing the genre to new limits. It’s an exciting time for R&B music, and we’re pleased to be to sitting right here in the front row, watching it evolve right before our eyes.Of course, you can hear that growth for yourself below.

Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 5]

It’s the middle of December, which for many of us means our Holiday break is just an arm’s length away. Of course there’s some hurdles to get through along the way. [NEW] Timbaland – Know Bout Me (Feat. Jay-Z, Drake & James Fauntleroy)

Timbaland
Know About Me (Feat. Jay-Z, Drake & James Fauntleroy)

After alluding to this track awhile back, mega-producer Timbaland drops a brand new single featuring Drake and Jay-Z. The single, titled “Know Bout Me,” is a monster collaboration and very reminiscent of classic Timbo from the 90’s with heavy hitting bass and rim rattling studio effects. It seems the beef is squashed between the rapper and producer and now we get the aftermath of the make-up. At first listen, it definitely takes some getting used to as Timbo abandons the synth beats and electro rhythms for a more throwback flow. That might be something that new fans are not used to but still is just as good as his previous hits. With the addition of Drizzy and Hov delivering some dope verses and James Faunterloy crooning on the hook, this is a nice taste of what is to come from the Virginia native.

If you are feeling nostalgic, take a listen to the first single off his upcoming full length Textbook Timbo, and be sure to grab a copy when it hits iTunes December 3rd.

[R&B] Drake – On My Way (Feat. James Fauntleroy)

Drake
On My Way ft. James Fauntleroy

Details about Drake‘s upcoming release Nothing Was The Same have been sparse, but he’s still left us with plenty to talk about with his music. “On My Way” is the fourth single we’ve heard from Drizzy in recent months, and it features a return to his classic R&B form. Drake can be quite the polarizing figure in the hip-hop/R&B scene, and to those individuals clamoring for him to stick to the rap game, Drake had this to say in a recent interview with GQ:

This is my fucking moment to say if I wanted to rap all the time, really rap, I would, but I also love to make music. I’ll do this for you right now. But it’s for me, too. It’s my story…I’m trying to get back to that kid in the basement. To say what he has to say. And I’m trying to make it last.
Sounds like Nothing Was The Same is going to turn out to be an interesting project to say the least. We’re definitely interested to see how it stacks up against Yeezus and Magna Carta Holy Grail at the end of the year. Listen to “On My Way” above, featuring R&B running mate James Fauntleroy, and if you have some time on your hands, make sure to check out at the rest of that GQ interview, as it definitely makes for a good read.

[NEW] Drake – Girls Love Beyonce (Feat. James Fauntleroy) (Prod. Noah “40” Shebib)

Drake
Girls Love Beyonce Feat. James Fauntleroy

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since Drake revealed to us his obligatory Khaled track for the year, “No New Friends,” but he decided to surprise us with a brand new single describing why “Girls Love Beyonce.” Drake definitely has a thing for recycling choruses from the late 90’s. Just as he did with Juvenile‘s “Back That Azz Up” on 2011’s “Practice,” Drizzy interpolates the hook of Destiny Child‘s hit song, “Say My Name” for this one. Don’t think that diminishes the quality of the track, however. This newest effort from Drake features him in his typical R&B form: raw, steady, relaxed, and smooth. As usual, the dusky, atmospheric production is handled by none other than 40, while James Fauntleroy (of Cocaine 80s fame) takes care of background vocals and chorus duties. After hearing his third single, it seems like Drake has got one hell of an album in store for us with Nothing Was The Same, dropping later this year.

[Hip-Hop] Common – Congratulations (Feat. Cocaine 80s) (Prod. No I.D.)

Common
CONGRATULATIONS

Common and No I.D. decided to bless us with a brand new collaboration this lovely Saturday evening. With it’s mellow and loungy vibes, the song is meant to depict the events of a wedding day from the best man’s perspective. Despite its celebratory start, the song takes a slightly darker turn as Common contemplates intervening during the ceremony. The song features Common at his best. He’s casual, yet still charming and captivating. It’s one of those songs where you can get wrapped up in the lyrics, but still easily vibe to it even if you’re not paying attention. Lookout for more chill tunes from Common and the Cocaine 80s collective as the year progresses.
