The Chill Dojo #156

After a heavy week of news there is great comfort in music, so hopefully this week’s edition can help to provide the right feelings to get us through whatever hardship we may be facing. An emotional piece from Lendrox has captured our hearts as he crafts beautiful piano and a chill beat to accompany the longing vocals from Noctilucent’s ‘All Alone’. At only 15 years of age, it’s one thing to create such an enchanting reinterpretation of the melodic bass-filled original, but it’s something else entirely to have your work released on MrSuicideSheep. Clearly there are big things in store for this talented youngster. A little further on in years, Grimecraft recently celebrated his 26th birthday in style with a fun rework of ‘Make Me Feel’. Incorporating a number of different quirky influences from slap bass to Zelda samples, this bouncy jam has given us a much needed smile this week.

A Dojo newcomer in DZZ keeps that happiness flowing with a charming song that encapsulates the bright creativity that exists within his mind. Jumping between styles and tempos, it’s hard to pin down exactly what makes this tune so mesmerizing, but there is definitely a uniqueness to it all that can’t help but be admired. It’s equally as difficult to settle on one definition of groove, but as we concluded a few days ago, FKJ is one artist who wields the art with soulful finesse. ‘Better Give U Up’ is just another example of that signature smoothness he brings to all of his irresistible concoctions.

And with that, we’re reminded that despite everything, the joy in this world can never be drowned out. Peace out.

The Chill Dojo #155

We’re kicking off Dojo #155 with some nu-disco action courtesy of Plastic Plates and his funky brand of feel good vibes. After being renowned for his own remix work, it’s only fitting that Oliver Nelson’s first original track receives a similar treatment of smooth elevation we’re used to hearing him dish out himself. ‘Found Your Love’ was already one of our favorite jams of 2015, and this summer-filled flip is a timely reminder that this year still has plenty of gold to discover before it’s done. Another producer who keeps reminding us of that fact is the ever-reliable jackLNDN, his latest EP Summer Never Ends Vol. 2 a testament to the endless stream of amazing tunes we discover every week. We’ve featured two tracks of this very nature from the release, ‘Hit Refresh’ carrying his signature polished groove, while ‘Streams’ travels down a more soulful jazzy route that is a delightful deviation from his usual style.

After a bit of a hiatus, Swiss producer Insan3Lik3 has returned to explore the future bass space, combining with Creepa to concoct a melodic yet restrained sound that has us keen to hear more artistic experimentation like this. No matter the quality of tools at their disposal, there is always going to be magic made when friends collaborate, and that’s exactly what j.roosevelt and Lea Beiley have proven with their stunning mellow single ‘Subtract & Divide’. We’re all about those bedroom gems that only take a little bit of polish to really shine, and boy do those vocals glisten in the light of those glorious keys. That’s not the only partnership we want to hero from the week either, with Kidswaste and Lolaby revealing an emotion-filled EP in the works, heralded by the beautiful ‘Make U Mine’. There is purity in the feelings that went into crafting this song, and it’s a simple message to be shared with the one you hold them for.

As for the rest of this playlist, that’s our message to you. Peace out.

[Electronic] Ark Patrol – At All (ft. Veronika Redd)

Ark Patrol
At All (ft. Veronika Redd)

It’s been a little while since we last heard the combination of Ark Patrol’s captivating brand of electronica together with the sophisticated vocals of Veronika Redd, but with the impending release of his latest album Primo we’ve been given another taste of what creativity their collaborations can conjure. They last teamed up for the soulful mellow single ‘Let Go’ back in April, but the Hawaiian-born producer has promised a more experimental approach to the upcoming album, and this song is a good indication of the diversity he will bring to his sound. A plodding beat sets the stage for Veronika’s profound lyrical work, with layers of curious soundscape interwoven throughout. While this formula carries through for the first half of the track, the intensity rises thereafter with his signature pulsating synths providing a driving force behind her words. Together it makes for a powerful piece of music that sets the tone for what to expect once the full album drops on the 20th of this month.

The Chill Dojo #154

It’s been a little while since we’ve indulged in the floating sounds of MaLuca, but his recent silence has been broken with a gorgeous collaboration with songstress I The Victor in ‘Plans’. It’s a stunning combination of his signature drifting tones with the serene vocals letting this one truly take flight. From float to bounce, Belgian producer No TV No Radio delivers a groovy little jam complete with Kolada’s beautifully pure voice. With vibes reminiscent of Mura Masa, ‘Come Back’ will definitely have you doing just that, as one listen just isn’t enough. Speaking of obsession, we watch Sam Gellaitry’s Soundcloud like a hawk, waiting for his next lush beat to drop. He’s brought his smooth touch once again with a delightful sampling of John Legend to boot. This kid can do no wrong.

If his moniker wasn’t enough, another young gun in Montreal’s dojo shows it’s more than just his name that makes him the perfect fit for our humble playlist. Flaunting bright future vibes in ‘flower power’, this song represents all the things in life that make you smile. Monstercat veterans Richard Caddock and Hyper Potions are all about creating music with these similar sentiments, revealing their latest future bass hit ahead of today’s release of the 24th label compilation album Vanguard. The Chill Dojo #153

The Chill Dojo is all about showcasing talent, and KHAI delivers that in spades with a whimsical feature from his recently released IF YOU EP. Following our recent interview with the emerging Austin artist, ‘Take’ was unveiled as the only collaborative piece on the EP, and it immediately captured our hearts with its magical air. The interwoven vocals of CYN are a glorious addition to this hypnotically beautiful song, with a few cheeky samples from another mystical character thrown in for good measure. This next combination needs no introduction, because Brasstracks taking on GoldLink is every bit as brilliant as the names suggest. ‘Dance On Me’ really was the perfect canvas for the duo to unleash their uplifting sound, providing a unique flow to the track that’s on another level.

While the bass has definitely not been held back from Illenium’s latest melodic masterpiece, there’s no denying that the intense emotion-filled experience of ‘Only One’ has that chill feel to qualify for a place in the Dojo ranks. It’s only the first single from his upcoming album, and our breath has already been taken away by its ambient builds and incredible percussion hits. In a similar fashion, Joshua Cherney has teamed up with PRXZM to deliver a dose of future bliss that may have you as crazily obsessed as its name suggests. While the bursts of synth are nothing short of slick, we’re all about the vibe from those soulful vocals that make this ideal easy-listening material. Norway’s Autolaser was one of the first in the future game, and his wealth of experience leaves him more than capable of re-imagining a classic with his signature creativity. We close this write-up with ‘Return Of The Mack’ like you’ve never heard it before, original funkiness intact, but amplified with explosions of colorful bass.

Of course we haven’t forgotten about the laid-back feel as well, so make sure to soak it all up. Peace out.

The Chill Dojo #152

The Chill Dojo is back after a few weeks off, but the music world certainly hasn’t slowed down while we were gone. Big news over this time was the release of Wave Racer’s eagerly anticipated Flash Drive EP, which included a massive collaboration with the one and only Lido. ‘World Record’ is everything you could imagine from this duo combining their production styles into one track, bursting with waves of happiness from start to finish. The care-free playfulness continues into ‘Bubble Wrap’, stirring up that warm fuzzy feeling that he weaves with so much ease. It’s definitely a sound that has caused a movement in the future game, and you can hear the inspiration in Dojo newcomer Shindig. ‘Hiccup’ shines with that same glint of blissful melody, but truly comes into its own with some serious chord shredding and a slick slap bass interlude. Melbourne’s own Moving Castle representative Dugong Jr is no stranger to a feel-good jam either, and together with TR!CK$ he’s crushed a jersey-influenced remix of ‘Goddess’ that emits positive vibes all day long.

UK producer Daktyl put his spin on a Future Classic hit, taking George Maple’s ‘Where You End And I Begin’ and amplifying the addictive chorus with some serious beats. Grande Marshall’s verse also receives a funk injection to add an extra layer of smoothness to the slick lyrical flow. The label has definitely been busy over the past few weeks, and fittingly we end the write-up as we began, with the release of another Future Classic EP. ‘Air’ is the final track in Basenji’s Trackpad EP, and much like the rest of the collection it’s steeped in vocally led emotion, layered with his ethereal goosebump-inducing sound.

[Electronic] Day One – Eon

Day One
Eon Ft. Isabel Higuero (Full Edit)

Genres in electronic will rise and fall in popularity over the years, but the musical gems which will stand the test of time are the productions that evoke something more profound beyond the physical sound itself. Whether it’s triggering a deep memory, or a vivid scene that you may not have ever seen before, it’s the story that flows from the sonic wavelengths that ultimately determines the lasting impacting that a track will have for its listeners.

What is so striking about Day One’s lead single from his upcoming Serenity EP is just how quickly those sentiments are awoken within moments of hearing the wondrous interweaving of astral soundscape and lush piano melody. The detail behind the artwork is generally a strong indication of the power of the aural narrative that is about to be told, and there could be nothing more fitting for ‘Eon’ than the glorious image of galactic exploration portrayed above. With clear intentions to depict the beginning of a journey into the stars, every element of this track has been painstakingly layered to accentuate the complete experience of adventure into the unknown. Add to that the stunning vocal accompaniment of Isabel Higuero’s handcrafted lyrics, and the senses suddenly become engaged at their most internal points, reaching down into the soul and creating a feeling unique to this arrangement of sound.

It’s the potency of that sentience that reflects the beauty of what these artists have been able to achieve here, and defines the quality that ensures ‘Eon’ will last for as long as its name suggests.
