[Hip-Hop] Rome Fortune – Love

Rome Fortune
Love

It’s always a dope feeling to see an artist you’ve been following for a while gain momentum and truly hit their stride. What proves even more rewarding, though, is those moments when an artist effectively paints that story from their perspective. Rome Fortune‘s “Love,” the second single off his upcoming Fool’s Gold debut, does just that while embodying the ultra-personal and experimental style that has brought him to this point.

Backed by airy production from oft-collaborator Cubby, Fortune serves up a detailed account of his struggles and triumphs over the last few years. Delving into the realities of making ends meet, being around for his kids and succeeding as a musician, “Love” provides an honest glimpse behind the curtains of an emerging talent. Around the 2:20 mark, Fortune’s vocals erupt into a celebratory auto-tuned croon. For some emcees that risk might not have panned out, but Rome’s comfort out of the norm makes for an endearing and emphatic conclusion. Peep this uplifting tune above–Jerome Raheem Fortune drops on February 26th and is available for pre-order here.

[Hip-Hop] Rome Fortune – Leaders (Prod. Four Tet)

Leaders (Prod By Four Tet)

Atlanta’s Rome Fortune has pushed boundaries in hip-hop for the last year in more than one way. His work with pioneering electronic producer Four Tet is just one great example making for some of our favorite tracks of 2014. Today, we get possibly their best collaboration to date with “Leaders,” an accurate title for both artists. Starting with some classic-sounding boom bap percussion, Four Tet adds layers of atmospheric keys and arpeggiated synths to take the backdrop to outer space. Equipped with just the right instrumental, Rome shines with a delivery that dynamically switches between matter-of-fact and melodic as he motivates others to take chances in the same way he has. It’s the type of tune that will inspire you to chase your dreams.

Fittingly, Rome also announced his new iPhone app today, which will allow fans to chat with him as well as receive exclusive content and browse his whole library of music. You can download it for free here.

[Hip-Hop] Rome Fortune & OG Maco – Yep (EP)

Atlanta emcee Rome Fortune has not slowed down one bit since the release of his debut project, Small VVorldOG Macowho was featured heavily on that project, has been equally prolific, most recently putting out a powerful EP, Breathe, in response to social injustices around the country. To kick off 2015, the two are back at it again with a new collaborative EP, appropriately titled Yep. The project expands on the bouncy, progressive production typical of both rappers creating a unique juxtaposition with lyrics that range from introspection to comical to romance. The addicting opening track, “Jungle,” draws you in immediately with its dynamic production and delivery from both artists and the project never really looks back. Other standouts for us included “Pearls,” “Make It Loud,” “Pay Rent” and the Chris McClenney-produced bonus track “Moving On,” but the EP is worth a listen from start to finish as it truly keeps you on your toes with its variety. [Future] GoldLink – Ay Ay (Gravez VIP) (feat. Drewsthatdude & Scolla)

Goldlink
Ay Ay (Gravez VIP) (ft. Drewsthatdude & Scolla)

Atlanta-based producer Gravez has positioned himself nicely for 2015 closing out last year with an onslaught of strong releases, both originals and remixes. His take on Drake‘s “6 God” was featured by multiple editors in our recent best of 2014 list, but it’s only one of many future hip-hop productions that has gained him a rapidly growing following on SoundCloud. For his last remix of 2014, Gravez unleashed a complete re-imagination of “Ay Ay,” the standout track from Ninja-favorite emcee GoldLink. With some production assistance from Drewsthatdude and vocal work by Scolla, the VIP keeps Link’s vocals in tact while transforming the booty-bouncing original into a soulful number with a distinct southern, future bounce.

With artists like Rome Fortune, Young Thug and iLoveMakonnen pushing the envelope as emcees in Atlanta, Gravez seems to be carving his own lane among the wave of producers creating unconventional backdrops helping ATLiens stay ahead of the curve sonically. We’re looking forward to what Gravez has in store for us this year between his original work, remixes and collaborations. In the meantime, enjoy this unique cut above, grab a free download and head to Gravez’s Soundcloud page for more gems.

Pure (prod by Jacques Greene)

The fusion of hip-hop and electronic music has been an on-going experiment since the rise of EDM that has proven potent when executed correctly. Of the many forward-thinking emcees with electronic beat selection, Atlanta’s Rome Fortune stands out as an exceptionally original example. His debut mixtape, Small VVorld, saw him maneuvering effortlessly over uncharted experimental soundscapes from the likes of Four Tet and Bassnectar.

Fortune’s latest release is yet another display of his versatility as he delivers a particularly personal song over an ethereal, lush instrumental from Montreal-native Jacques Greene. “Pure” sees Rome Fortune venting about disingenuous relationships and ulterior motives but also finding the strength to shake it off with the chorus, “I ain’t mad at all, but why can’t I find something pure? For once in my life.” Enjoy this powerful track, and grab a free download, above.

[Hip-Hop] Rome Fortune – Small VVorld (Album)

Atlanta has long been home to some of hip-hop’s most unique characters dating back to Outkast‘s emergence, which not only opened the doors for southern rap in the mainstream, but also gave ATL emcees confidence to be as epically strange as they are today. Over the last year we’ve seen artists from Young Thug to Raury rise to prominence and their vastly different styles are a true testament to the diversity of creative minds coming out of the area. In the midst of countless burgeoning Atlanta artists, Rome Fortune has managed to stand out carving out a multi-faceted sound all his own.

After a series of impressive releases, Fortune’s debut project premiered on Billboard yesterday and it’s a must listen for hip-hop fans looking for music that pushes the genre forward. Small VVorld has a distinct abstract feel to it as Rome Fortune delivers his laid-back vocals over a truly impressive range of instrumentals. Aside from far-out production courtesy a few of the South’s many talented beat makers, Fortune teams up with experimental, electronic producers Four Tet and Bassnectar displaying an aptitude for songwriting over dynamic production. Although the emcee features are light, his tracks with oft-collaborator OG Maco display a clear chemistry and the cut “FriendsMaybe” with iLoveMakonnen is one of the most fun, memorable moments of the project.

In some ways, Fortune’s steez on the microphone over ethereal production brings to mind the “cloud rap” popularized by Bay Area acts like Main Attrakionz, while maintaining Atlanta’s trap influences and developing a compelling narrative. The result is one of the most progressive, creative rap projects of the year that we would describe in short as cloud-trap rap. Stream the whole project, and grab the free download, below.
