FYFE – Polythene Love [TMN PREMIERE]

FYFE
Polythene Love

All week long, FYFE has been generously sharing new material in preparation for his upcoming album, Control. Today however, we have the esteemed pleasure of sharing perhaps our favorite of the new releases, “Polythene Love.” If you’ve been following FYFE for as long as we have, the subject matter should come as no surprise to you, centering around the concept of disposable relationships; temporary connections or flings we engage in as a way to combat loneliness rather than pursuing something more meaningful.

Upon first listen, “Polythene Love” is easily one of the most vibrant and unique tracks on the project. Assisted by an uncredited female vocalist who goes by Mai, the pair navigate their way through an intricate mesh of striking synths and bubbling guitar riffs. Meanwhile, Fyfe unsuccessfully tries to court the young woman, leaving him asking the crucial question, “Is this ‘Polythene Love’ again?” We were curious about the inspiration behind this new tune, so we asked the Londoner himself to provide a little insight of his own on the number:

School disco cringe played out in the adult world. A playful observation of the relentless and the often not just acknowledged, but celebrated pursuit of flimsy, throw-away or plastic (polythene) ‘love’. I find it amusing, visualising my own school disco experiences of boys lined up one side and girls the other and overlaying it onto memories of university nights out, but wondering how well aligned the two might be if those in the latter scene were not completely wasted.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 2 years since we first discovered FYFE, which makes this project long overdue. The wait will finally come to an end on Tuesday, when Control finally hits shelves, however you still have time to order yourself a copy before March 9th through either iTunes or Rough Trade.

Through The Wire (Kanye West Cover)

After spending a good majority of 2013 at the top of the Hype Machine charts, FYFE has remained relatively quiet throughout 2014, as he gears up for the release of his debut album, Control. With a release date in hand now, the British sensation has decided to celebrate by releasing a quirky cover of Kanye West‘s “Through The Wire.” Anytime someone decides to cover Kanye it makes for a risky proposition, but in this case the College Dropout classic is an especially curious choice considering FYFE is not a rapper himself. We know better than to doubt the crafty musician though, and it’s safe to say he’s delivered one of the more creative takes on a Kanye track we’ve ever heard. FYFE’s interpretation is sparse, yet placating–characteristic of many of his previous singles–and he manages to build a record that has its own identity, while still paying tribute to the original with mixed-in vocals from Yeezy himself.

The young talent had this to say about his inspirations behind the track:

Through The Wire has been stuck in my head for most of the last 10 years. The fact that Kanye West had a track on his last album named I Am A God added a certain amount of pressure to the process, but once I got over the image of him peering over my shoulder whilst I made the cover it came along quite quickly. To Kanye West purists- I’m sorry. To everyone else – I hope you enjoy it.
Stream the track above, and make sure to pre-order your copy of Control before it hits shelves on March 9th.

[Alternative] Fyfe – Lies Pt. II

Lies Pt. II

Fyfe has already expressed his disdain for deceit once before, but it seems like he wasn’t quite finished with the topic. Hammering his point home for a second time, this sequel takes a much more minimalist approach than the original, with the UK crooner’s vocals floating seamlessly over a nearly vacant, serene ambient backdrop. It’s a truly beautiful song, and yet another gem to add to the London native’s excellent collection. Check out the single above, and make sure to grab yourself a free download of this wonderful tune.

Conversations

It’s only perfect that Fyfe‘s latest single is titled “Conversations” because that’s exactly what he’s sparked since the very first moment he stepped foot onto the music scene with “Solace.” From a virtual nobody to one of the most revered artists of 2013, Fyfe has endeared himself to listeners with his captivating vocals and brilliant lyrics. As displayed through his artwork, Dixon is aiming for a far more colorful effort here, blending together a myriad of different genres to produce yet another infectious tune. Indeed, the one thing that truly impresses us about Fyfe is his ability to maintain a consistent sound, yet each of his songs stands out clearly for the rest. It’s a true testament to just how talented the man really is. We expect big things from Fyfe going forward, and if you haven’t had a chance to check out last month’s Solace EP, make sure to give it a listen here.

[Alternative] Fyfe – Lies

Lies

As the release date of Fyfe‘s Solace EP steadily approaches, we now have access to three of the project’s four tracks. “Lies” isn’t as immediately impactful as its two predecessors, but it has endearing qualities of its own. Being the most low tempo effort of the trio, “Lies” has a rather airy vibe to it, as Fyfe’s floating vocals gently lift you off of the ground and whisk you away to a distant place. The lyrics aren’t quite as peaceful however, as Fyfe begs his partner to cut the bullshit, crooning out, “Lies won’t live.” If you’ve been following Fyfe’s ascent to this point, there’s no doubt you’re excited for his upcoming Solace EP, dropping April 7th. For the extra eager, pre-orders are already being taken on iTunes.

[Alternative] Fyfe – St Tropez

Fyfe set the internet ablaze last month when the mysterious young singer released his excellent single, “Solace” with nothing else but a rear headshot. After his unexpected success, the Londoner has finally revealed some more information about himself, identifying himself as 23-year-old Paul Dixon, an artist who previously recorded under the moniker, David Lyre.

“St Tropez” starts out with a rather mellow vibe before a sense of urgency takes over as Fyfe begins to plead “Take me home, it’s not our home here.” As the song shuffles between fleeting orchestral horns and subdued guitar riffs, Fyfe is able to balance out the transitions with his stellar vocals, crafting a stirring yet congruent melody. If I truly had to make a comparison here, I’d probably say it reminds me of both Thom Yorke and Miguel, which really gives you an idea of the range he’s able to display. I’ve heard plenty of other comparisons as well though, and I’m curious to see who he reminds you all of when his debut EP Solace drops  on April 7th.
