Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 4]

It’s the first weekend of December, meaning I, like most of you out there, spent my Sunday stuck inside watching the snowflakes gently trickle down to the ground. Being trapped indoors isn’t always a bad thing however. At least you now have an excuse to huddle around the fireplace as you listen to the latest edition of Sunday Night Soul (if you don’t have a fireplace, a space heater will have to do). This edition is packed further to the brim than that mug of piping hot cocoa you’re gripping onto right now, with tasty selections from some of the most talented singers from across the web. It’s hard to pick a favorite from this crop, but I’d like to point your attention to offerings from newcomers Snoh Aalegra, Rosie LoweDrew Love, and SPZRKT. Of course we have to recognize budding series regulars Raleigh RitchieTev’n, and Tei Shi, as well as TMN favorites Childish GambinoJhené Aiko, Bondax, and Sebastian Mikael. If that stellar lineup alone doesn’t give it away, we’re rather confident that you’ll leave tonight’s presentation well satisfied.

[Chill] James Blake – Take a Fall For Me ft RZA

This week’s a busy one for UK native James Blake. His Big Boi-sampling “Everyday I Ran” surfaced just yesterday, and now he’s back with another track for your listening enjoyment titled “Take a Fall for Me”. The producer/ singer has always experimented with new synths and sounds so it is no surprise that he collaborates with legendary emcee RZA for this new single. The haunting vocals and airy production make for a nice background to the spoken work poetry by the the Wu-Tang lyricist. It is not known yet whether this will be on any upcoming effort but take a listen to the smooth track below.

The Black Keys & RZA – The Baddest Man Alive (Video)

“The Baddest Man Alive” gets an action-packed video featuring bluesy indie rockers The Black Keys and hip-hop’s RZA. But it’s not quite like the fights you’d see in the film The Man With The Iron Fists. It involves a fish, fortune cookie, lettuce, and a healthy dose of humor. See how these guys throw it down. The track is also streamable below.

[Hip-Hop] Wu-Tang Clan – Six Directions of Boxing

As we’ve noted in some of our previous posts, The Man With The Iron Fists is not only on pace to be the best original soundtrack of the year, but the argument can also be made that it’s in contention to be one of the top albums of the year as well. On the latest leak from the project, RZA manages to reassemble the full Wu-Tang Clan minus only a few members. It’s almost like the 90’s never left on this low-key, funky trip with U-God, Ghostface Killah, GZA, Masta Killa, Cappadonna, and Inspectah Deck all stepping into the ring to sock you in the face from multiple directions with their fiery fists of fury (hence the name of the song). I wouldn’t call it a comeback for the Wu just yet, but it’s definitely a start. Hopefully this leads to even more collaborations in the future, and maybe even a 20 year reunion project once 2013 rolls around.  The idea’s not that farfetched is it?

[HOT] The Black Keys & RZA – The Baddest Man Alive

The soundtrack for the forthcoming Quentin Tarantino film, The Man With The Iron Fists, is shaping up to have quite a few hit-worthy cuts. “The Baddest Man Alive,” which features both The Black Keys and RZA, is one such example. Given the big talent on this track, it’s probably unnecessary for us to convince you to check it out. But just in case, here are two perfect words to describe it: Badass Swag.

[Hip/Hop] RZA – Blowin’ in the Wind

Legendary producer, rapper, and former Wu-Tang member RZA is back to deliver some of that chill, rap music that we know and love. With his new single “Blowin’ in the Wind”, he takes a step away from behind the scenes to drop some ill bars over a horns and slowed down drum loop beat. Even though he hasn’t worked with Wu-Tang in years, he still has time to pay homage in one of his verses while giving listeners that throwback appeal. This track is dope and be sure to check out his upcoming flick “Man with the Iron Fist”.
