[NEW] The xx – Chained (Video)

“Chained,” the understated, but lush heartache of a song by The xx, gets some truly ethereal underwater visuals. The video was directed by Young Replicant (who also worked on Purity Ring‘s “Fineshrine”) and was done in conjunction with The Creators Project, a partnership between Vice and Intel. The xx – Reconsider (Bonus Track)

In “Reconsider,” an excellent bonus iTunes track off The xx‘s Coexist, a simple but luring and curling guitar line rings out, rearing its head to break the otherwise hushed ambiance. The ghostly effects amidst spans of silence, dueling male/female vocals, and a heavy, unceasing feeling of yearning make this an especially haunting and moving song.

Make sure to revisit our coverage of other tracks, such as “Chained,“Sunset” and “Angels.” Coexist officially comes out Tuesday, September 11th on Young Turks, but you can stream it in its entirety via NPR here.

[NEW] The xx – Sunset

With less than a month until the release date of The xx‘s highly anticipated sophomore album, yet another new track has surfaced onto the interwebs. A bare, minimalist-type song, “Sunset”‘s highlights are found in the pairing of the male/female vocals. Separately, each is velvety and so uniquely textured, but together, they sound especially spine-tingling. Soft-spoken but intimate, solemn but still sultry, they speak volumes without actually doing so. Like “Chained,” which we wrote about not too long ago, “Sunset” follows a relationship that’s falling apart at the seams.

Coexist comes out September 11th on Young Turks.

[HOT] The xx – Chained

“Chained” is the latest track to surface from Coexist, the highly anticipated sophomore album by The xx. Ambient and sultry, backed throughout by a soft, palpitating beat and utilizing little guitar work until the more rousing ending — it’s the kind of understated, yet lush track we’ve come to expect from the UK group. Even more moving than the music itself are the lyrics, which tell the story of a faltering relationship and lovers who are growing apart. The repeated line, “We used to be closer than this…” is especially heartbreaking.

Coexist comes out on September 11th via Young Turks.

The London-based production collective, The Confect, recently released this incredible rework of The xx‘s already beautiful “Angels”. This remix maintains the original’s ethereal feel, while infusing some hip-hop percussion and deep underlying bass. The result invokes profound thought and shows us the breadth of emotion that music can capture. The xx’s second album, Coexist, is set to drop September 11th and The Confect is most definitely a crew worth following.
