Upon our first listen of GoldLink’s debut project, The God Complex, we immediately knew he had the potential to change the landscape of hip-hop. From a technical perspective, the DMV-bred emcee has an impressive, quick-hitting flow with an equally adept vocal range making for a versatile, dynamic sound. What really sets him apart, though, is his openness to work with forward-thinking producers and, maybe even more importantly, the connection his unique, unabashed lyrics find with his audience. Whether it be fun tracks like “Ay Ay” or more introspective cuts like “When I Die,” GoldLink very much feels like a genuine voice that can represent his generation for years to come.

Hip-hop is currently going through a fascinating transformation as rappers continue taking risks ranging from the strange vocal inflections of Young Thug, and more recently Makonnen, to the future bass raps of Goldlink. The Soulection collective has had a special role in carving out what label-captain Joe Kay calls the “sound of tomorrow” lending their unique brand of dance music as instrumentals for a broad range of talented emcees. The strength of this movement is multiplied by the artists’ and labels’ openness to collaborate, which in the digital age has become easier than ever and allows for an unprecedented diversity in styles.

The latest remix from Flow-Fi‘s Rvdical the Kid is exemplary of this incredible progression reworking the already dope track, “Black Sand,” from frequent West Michigan AGO collaborators Joose and Sango into an addicting masterpiece. While the original has a minimal and incredibly relaxed vibe to it, Rvdical’s take adds an ethereal element rearranging the vocal sample and adding unique percussion giving Joose’s lyrics a whole new context. Last night, I came across a tweet from Soulection–affiliated producer Dpat that read, “Emotional Dance Music.” While it was likely intended as a joke, this perfectly describes the genre emerging from the impressive LA-based collective whose roster includes some of the brightest up ‘n coming talents in electronic music today. Melding sounds of classic R&B with experimental elements of various EDM genres, the artists of Soulection have created a unique vibe that is airy, lo-fi and relaxing, yet completely danceable.

Earlier today, to celebrate gaining 100,000 followers on their Soundcloud page, Soulection put out a free compilation full of new material that demonstrates exactly how they have gotten to this point. 100k is an incredibly dope collection that captures the scope of the crew’s talents and uniquely soothing style.
