[Future] Banks – Someone New (Esta Remix)

Banks
Someone New(esta Remix)

This summer, the Soulection super-team has continued to release progressive tunes on a daily basis. With its recent announcement as a program on the new Apple Radio, the Soulection brand has become nearly synonymous with a new type of music altogether. Demonstrating an exceptional style and flair, this crew of producers have toured, coproduced, and pushed each other to create innovative music for the last several years.

L.A. based crew member Esta – who has worked with the likes of JMSN, Kehlani, Towkio, Alina Baraz and many more – released his newest remix, “Someone New” late last week. The original, an acoustic track from Banks.’ album Goddess, is a soft-spoken ballad often overshadowed by the mainstream success of singles “Warm Water”, “Brain”, “Drowning”, and “Beggin for Thread”.

With the additional support of Jose Rios creating an up-tempo harmony on the bass guitar, Esta injects new life into his energetic new version. In “Someone New”, Esta once again does a masterful job of crafting synthesized loops, especially within the bridge of the song. This rhythmic tune succeeds in feeling unique while still amplifying the passionate elements of the original.

Esta is currently on tour; fans can catch him at stops in Washington DC with Goldlink and New York with Sango later this summer.

[Future Hip-Hop] Galimatias & Goldlink – One Step Back (Gravez Remix)

Galimatias & Joppe ft. GoldLink
One Step Back (Gravez Remix)

Future hip-hop is a relatively new genre, engineered with the intent to blend the best components of the music world. Meshing lyrical content and melodic flow of artists with the unparalleled smoothness and texture of future beats is the perfect way to satiate all of the auditory senses in one track.

A couple days ago, Atlanta artist and HW&W collective member Gravez released his version of last year’s popular Soulection track, “One Step Back.” In his latest creation, Gravez has taken the noisy original tune and sparingly injected it with synths, the softly inarticulate crooning of Denmark’s Galimatias, and segments of low-pitched dynamics common in the future genre.

The idiophones and hi-hats dotted through this track add to a uniquely smooth quality that is juxtaposed by the fast rhyming vocals of Goldlink. “One Step Back” is a symbol of how contrasting styles can be combined to create a special tune; it is the divergence of styles creating a peaceful banger.

Gravez is wrapping up a tour with shows in Boston and San Francisco in mid-July. Check out “One Step Back” above and download the track here.

[Future R&B] SPZRKT – Blind Man (Prod. by J-Louis)

SPZRKT
Blind Man (Prod. by J-Louis)

This weekend Xavier Adams, the pride of Warner Robins, Georgia, released the latest song under his affiliation in the STRT_TRBL collective. Adams, more commonly known as Spazzy Rocket – and often shortened to SPZRKT – should sound familiar from previous coverage on his highly regarded work with Sango co-creating the EP Hours Spent Loving You this past March.

In fact, SPZRKT – whose music first appeared on TMN in 2013 – has seen rapid growth in recognition and popularity since the release of Middle of Things, a timeless single (and personal favorite) from Sango’s album North.

Following the success of other recent releases like “Crossroads,” “Can’t Wait” and “The Motive,” Blind Man is the latest instance displaying his ability to infuse tracks with soul and emotion. With an aesthetic charisma and the smoothness of a lullaby, Blind Man coincides with Spazzy’s previous musical themes such as the earthly and heavenly connection in healthy relationships.

Lyrically, the song strikes the listener with similar silkiness displayed on tracks from Hours Spend Loving You. With lines like “I’m gonna take my time with your mind, your ambition won’t leave me alone // body like a queen but it ain’t about your body baby it’s about your being”, Spazzy’s R&B crooning is a powerfully emotional talent that takes the production of J-Louis over the top on this release.

Listeners can stay up to date with all of SPZRKT’s tunes on his soundcloud, as well as that of STRT_TRBL. Check out “Blind Man” up top and bookmark this one for next year’s Valentines Day playlist.

[Future] Mura Masa – Soundtrack To A Death (Album Review)

’Mura Masa – … Girl’
’Mura Masa – Hell’
’Mura Masa – Bae’

Back in April of 2013, we premiered  “Birdcage Chain,” a nuanced trap masterpiece that introduced us to then 16-year-old beatsmith, Mura Masa. Since the release of his impressive self-titled EP last year, the young UK producer has been evolving and expanding his style to encompass an unmatched repertoire of sounds and influences. After providing a few promising glimpses into his debut album recently, the now 18-year-old musician released his debut album yesterday.

Soundtrack To A Death serves as a fitting title for the project with each song representing a lifetime of its own only to be reincarnated with the next in a refreshing, yet unified manner. While the trap percussion undertones remain prevalent, their booming qualities are contrasted with a mix of gorgeous pianos and synths, unique eastern sounds, engineered electronic instrumentation and flawlessly placed vocal samples. It’s difficult to establish favorites on a project as complete as this one, but we’ve shared a few above that portray its diversity. “…Girl” may best capture Mura Masa’s musical genius as he takes a simple piano melody and builds a masterfully arranged tune that is versatile and endlessly addicting.

In listening to this album, you get the sense that Mura Masa creates meticulously, with attention to every detail and subtlety, resulting in a mind-altering, deeply emotional listening experience, which brings to mind artists like Flying Lotus and XXYYXX. Although “Future” has always seemed like a strange genre classification, Mura Masa truly pushes musical boundaries on this project taking the current direction of electronic music to a whole new level and, at only 18, he is quite literally the future. Soundtrack To A Death can be streamed in its entirety and purchased over at Bandcamp; and is also available on iTunes.

P.S. Hit the jump to see the epic video for “…Girl” and listen to Mura Masa’s remix of Aryay‘s “The Lawnmower,” which just won the official remix contest.
