Watch Performances From Last Night’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Let’s face it: the Grammy’s blow. They’re a total misrepresentation of the actual trends happening in music, and are usually at least two to three steps behind the curve. The Recording Academy is out of touch with the culture, and while the awards still have some meaning to them, the show lacks the same significance it had in previous generations. With that mini rant out of the way, I would like to congratulate all of last night’s winners, and don’t want to take anything away from the artists themselves or any of their accomplishments. What we are here to do today is highlight one of the positive aspects of the show: the performances. From 33 couples getting married during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ rendition of “Same Love,” Kendrick Lamar‘s frenetic display during an insane mashup of “M.A.A.D. City” and “Radioactive” with Imagine Dragons, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr re-uniting as one half of The Beatles, and finally to Jay-Z and Beyoncé giving us a glimpse into their chemistry together on stage, this year’s awards had plenty to offer in terms of entertainment value. Check out some of the best ones below, and let us know your thoughts on which one was your favorite.

Daft Punk, Pharrell, Nile Rodgers & Stevie Wonder

White Walls (Feat. ScHoolboy Q & Hollis)

Say what you will about Macklemore, but don’t tell me the guy doesn’t know how to make a good music video. After thoroughly dominating the charts for the good part of a year now, you’d think Mack would be ready to hang up his saddle for some well deserved rest and relaxation. Instead, he keeps on rolling forward, trading that saddle in for a fully pimped-out old school Cadillac. He rides that whip all the way to a crazy backyard pool party, where he celebrates his success with some grannies and a gaggle of new buddies like A$AP Rocky, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa, Trinidad Jame$, Sir Mix-A-Lot, DJ Drama, and ScHoolboy Q (who happens to contribute a verse on this track). While that all may sound a little strange, trust us when we say it looks like loads of fun. Check out the dope visuals below, and make sure to grab the single on iTunes if you don’t have it already.

[Hip-Hop] Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Stay At Home Dad

Macklemore X Ryan Lewis
Stay At Home Dad

In honor of Father’s Day, Macklemore decided to revive this hilarious ode to all the “Stay At Home Dads” out there. Conceived back in 2010, the track is meant to make light of certain gender roles and stigma surrounding dads who choose to take care of the kids and handle the chores around the house while the wife is out making all the bread. The song gives us a glimpse of what life for Mack might’ve been like if he never made it big. Thankfully for us though, everything worked out for him, meaning he won’t have to be concerned about how many bagels to toast for his wife in the morning. Check out the goofy track above, and make sure to grab a free download for yourself as well.

Can't Hold Us Feat. Ray Dalton

Macklemore is almost as well known for his cinematic visuals as he is for his witty lyricism. With each and every video that comes out, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and the rest of their team prove that they have unmatched artistic ambition, and “Can’t Hold Us” might just be their most ambitious effort to date. Being a successful independent artist means Mack is able to carry his epic vision out unhinged, without any interference from any labels. The Seattle rapper’s been determined from the very beginning to provide us with an unfiltered experience, which he declares with, “Labels out here/Nah they can’t tell me nothing/We give it to the people/Spread it across the country.”

Macklemore spreads his message even further in the video, which features him swooping across various locations, from icy tundras, to scorching deserts, to expansive fields and more, before finally hanging his flag over the Space Needle in his hometown of Seattle. It’s a truly stunning and inspring work of art, and it’s arguably the best video produced by Macklemore and his crew to date.  Once you’re finished watching the seven minute production, make sure to take a peek at a note from Ryan Lewis about all the moving pieces behind its creation.

[Hip-Hop] Macklemore x Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop Feat. Wanz

Macklemore may still be considered a Freshman by name, but don’t ever dare label him as a rookie. I don’t think it’s possible to find a more self aware artist out there right now. Those familiar with the Seattle native are used to hearing him preach about various social issues (ranging from consumerism to gay marriage) in ways most rappers couldn’t even imagine approaching. On his latest single though, he assures us he can still have a good time too, while simultaneously getting his message across. “Thrift Shop” functions as a parody of most mainstream rap music, which is riddled with materialism and exaggeration. With a chorus like “I’m gonna pop some tags/I only got 20 dollars in my pocket,” Macklemore attempts to show that you can still live the good life on a thrift store budget. While the song itself is filled with jokes, don’t think of it as strictly joke rap, because Mack manages to still tear this beat apart.  Peep the new track below, and make sure you get the full experience by watching the hilarious video after the jump.
