[Hip-Hop] Tunji Ige – Missed Calls (EP)

After bursting onto the scene in 2014 with his self-produced debut mixtape, The Love Project, Philly emcee Tunji Ige spent 2015 slowly rolling out a slew of impressive genre-bending tunes including collaboration with What So Not and Oshi. Fellow Philly rep Noah Breakfast, formerly known as Xaphoon Jones, has become his go-to producer and rightfully so–their styles could not be more complimentary. Breakfast’s inventive, electronic landscapes blend with Ige’s own atmospheric production chops and melodic flows.

Today, the duo dropped Missed Calls, Ige’s first official project since his debut taking the musical exploration to new heights. While the EP still possess a hip-hop flavor, the influence of dance music is felt on each track. “Change That,” the opener sets the tone with banging, forward-thinking production and a characteristically addicting hook from Tunji. As the project progresses, each track presents a distinct facet–subtle house elements can be felt on the smooth “War,” heavier electro-trap prevails “On My Grind” and “Bring Yo Friends” and “22,” the final track, carries dreary future R&B stylings. Missed Calls proves that Tunji Ige has the talent to become a cross over star with a sound that’s both refreshing and accessible. Give it a peep below–you can grab on iTunes now.

[R&B] Tory Lanez – Karrueche (Prod. Noah Breakfast)

ToryLanez
Karrueche (Prod. Noah Breakfast)

A week ahead of the release of his upcoming Cruel Intentions EP, Tory Lanez brings back his Fargo Fridays series with a brand new track named after Chris Brown‘s ex, “Karrueche”. The Toronto native is no stranger to dedicating his ballads to famous females, previously releasing an homage to Teyana Taylor that prompted a playful response from the GOOD Music songstress herself. Lanez makes reference to that previous tune as he goes into full R&B mode on this one, crooning over a breezy, carefree instrumental provided by Noah Breakfast, who previously worked on a handful of songs from last year’s excellent Lost Cause mixtape. We didn’t think it was possible, but after hearing this single, we’re even more stoked for his upcoming collaborative EP with WEDIDIT, set to drop next Friday. Stream the track above here, and make sure to check back here once the EP is available.

When Tory Lanez first dropped “Henny In Hand” last fall, it was an instant favorite here at TMN. Now a few months later, we finally have equally stunning visuals for the mesmerizing single. Directed by Andrew Hines (who also helmed the visuals for “The Godfather“), the video opens with Tory seated in the VIP area of a club eyeing a female from afar. The woman accepts payment from another gentleman who offers to take her home, and the rest of the story unfolds with Tory following closely behind. We don’t want to reveal too many details though, as there’s certainly a few exciting twists near the end.

Peep the visuals below, and make sure to check out his most recent collaboration with Snakehips on “Dimelo.” Now that he’s wrapped up his second Lost Cause tour, expect even more music from Tory on the way. In the meantime, feel free to read what he had to say to us about the experience last month.

I-95 (Prod. RL Grime, Tory Lanez, Noah Breakfast x Grave Goods)

With the imminent release of his debut album Lost Cause right around the corner, Tory Lanez has decided to let go of one last single to tease his fans during the short wait. Bringing forth a team effort on this one, the talented Canadian links up with a couple TMN favorites, RL Grime and Noah Breakfast, to help expand his Toronto sound. Aiming for a more introspective vibe with this track, we find Tory shuffling through his thoughts as he cruises down “I-95.” Talented as he is, “I-95” once again allows Tory to flex his gifts as a versatile star, kicking around a few eloquent bars and vaunting his syrupy vocals on the hook. The tune serves as another fascinating glimpse into what Tory has in store for us on Lost Cause, which will finally be out this Monday.

Tory Lanez is a multi-faceted star, and in the last year or so, has quickly become another one of our favorites to hail from the land up north. While many musicians these days attempt to toe the line between hip-hop artist and R&B singer, the Toronto native manages to execute both roles flawlessly. His latest single, “Henny In Hand,” is proof of that, as the Canadian crooner operates in falsetto for most of the sultry number over some silky smooth production from Noah Breakfast & Matti Free. It’s not until the end of the bedroom jam that he hits us with some bars, choosing to close out the track with a quick verse.

“Henny In Hand” is the third single from Tory’s upcoming debut album, Lost Cause, which will be available September 29th. He also has a corresponding tour set to kick off later this month in Austin, Texas. Make sure to check out his website to find out when he’ll be making his way to your city.

[NEW] Ellie Gouding – Life Round Here (Feat. Angel Haze) (Prod. Noah Breakfast)

Ellie Goulding
Life Round Here (Feat. Angel Haze)

When James Blake released his Chance The Rapper assisted remix to “Life Round Here,” late last year, we assumed that would be the ultimate version of the single that we’d hear. Then again, we never expected a team up quite like this. Covering a James Blake song is certainly no easy task, but this revamped crew consisting of Ellie Goulding, Angel Haze and Noah Breakfast, give the original a run for its money, rebuilding the track completely from the ground up. Crafting a dense, ambient instrumental for the ladies to play with, Noah opts for a sounds that’s arguably far more melancholic than Blake’s forerunner. Ellie’s vocals float through the track almost aimlessly, yet they still feel purposeful as they lead in to a fierce verse from Angel Haze. Stream the single above, and let us know which version is your true favorite.
