[Video] Deebs & Jarell Perry – Relapse

Deebs & Jarell Perry
Relapse

The duo of Deebs and Jarell Perry proved what can be accomplished when two immensely creative forces collide together with the release of their collaborative Shift EP back in May. After taking their talents on tour across much of the West Coast and Canada, the pairing’s bond has only grown stronger since then and today we bear witness to the latest fruits of their labor in the form of the music video for their standout single “Relapse”. The stunning visuals serve as the directorial debut for fashion photographer/podcast host, Yoshino, whose previous work has been featured in publications like Elle and Flaunt Magazine.

The video starts off solemn and colorless, but signs of fracture start to show as the song builds towards it climax. Almost without warning, everything shatters into a sea of pixels, syncing up perfectly with the song’s urgent synths and Jarell’s ominous vocals. The visual piece serves as the best example of datamoshing that we’ve seen since Kanye West notably used the trippy glitchy effects for his “Welcome To Heartbreak” video back in 2009.

When asked about his vision for the track Perry had this to say about the inspiration behind the visuals:

I’ve seen a lot of close friends, particularly women, deal with limiting beliefs about who they are and who they can be outside of a toxic relationship. It’s a battle they are fighting with themselves, and for me it was important that the visuals represent that tension (and liberation) in a more unconventional way.

If you still somehow haven’t heard the duo’s Shift EP, do yourself a favor and grab a copy on iTunes. Look for new material from Deebs and Jarell to emerge soon, and for those in the L.A. area make sure to catch the latter with starRo at the Lyric Theatre on February 5th.

Jarell Perry – Quiet Life [TMN PREMIERE]

Quiet Life
Jarell Perry x APSPDR+

It’s been awhile since we last heard from Jarell Perry. Retreating into the “Quiet Life” during the latter half of 2014, Perry spent considerable time cultivating his craft in preparation for his upcoming project, Noise, set to drop later this spring. Today, we have the distinct honor of premiering the very first single from his new EP.

Produced by APSPDR+ (SZA, BOSCO), “Quiet Life,” as you may have guessed, is an ode to the simple things. Unlike many of his contemporaries, the burgeoning singer expresses a desire to eschew the glitz and glamour associated with fame in favor of a much more intimate existence, proclaiming on the chorus that “living loud is lonely.” It’s difficult to argue with his reasoning, as the reticent crooner describes his idyllic vision over an eerie, soporific backdrop complimented by clattering 808’s and numbing synths. The talented vocalist had the following to say about what he set out to accomplish with the pensive number,

It’s a reflective/nostalgic tune I wanted to get out while the buzz of the holidays and winter cuffing season is still palpable. I’ve been doing a lot of inner self-work for the last couple months and this song really reflects that.
Listen/download the new track above, and keep your eyes peeled for Noise, which is shaping up to include a bevy of gifted producers, including the likes of Rusko, starRo, and deebs. Also, if you’re in the Los Angeles area and would like to get a taste of Jarell’s incredible vocals live, make sure to grab tickets for his show at Bootleg Hifi at the end of this month.

[R&B/Soul] Jarell Perry – White EP (Full Stream)

Jarell Perry
White EP (continuous mix)

Jarell Perry has quickly made a name for himself over the last few months as one of the most promising young acts in R&B. A fixture in our Sunday Night Soul series, Jarell possesses unparalleled vocal range and flexibility that allow him to constantly explore new sounds and push the boundaries of his music. With the White EP that versatility is on full display. After one listen I can already count influences from Kanye West, MiguelThe Weeknd & SBTRKT–a rather diverse group that tells you all you need to know about the variety of distinct material this project has to offer.

The White EP is an entrancing ride from start to finish, with Jarell’s slickly rich, yet delicate vocals acting as the chauffeur. It’s the production of DJ HSVN that really paves the road for the charismatic crooner to flourish on, with a wide assortment of instrumentals rooted in the likes of alternative R&B, neo-soul, hip-hop, electronic and trap music. Through this EP the LA native demonstrates a maturity and understanding of musical complexities that many of his contemporaries lack. While there’s certainly room for growth, this might be one of the better projects in the genre you’ll hear all year. Do yourself a favor and stream the entire EP above, and then head over to iTunes immediately after to grab a copy for yourself.

[NSFW] Jarell Perry – Braindead [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

Jarell Perry
Braindead

There’s never really a question of whether or not there’s good music coming out of the City of Angels. Every other day, we’re stumbling over a new artist that wins us over. While we were already very familiar with “Braindead” from alt-Soul act Jarell Perry, he’s yet another example of the swelling sea of musical talent in L.A.

Fusing together classic soulful R&B vocals, electronic synths and beats, and pop structures, Perry has paved his own lane in this genre. “Braindead” is a classic example of his unique style, offering up something that would be easily appreciated from a radio audience, or blog-reading indepedent music lovers as well.

This tune dropped about three months ago, giving us a teaser of his upcoming White EP. Fast forward a few other releases, “Black Valentine” and “Eleven,” and today we’re honored to premiere the music video for “Braindead.” This painfully emotion-rich song features visuals that are most assuredly not safe for the workplace or school. However, if you’re feeling brave on the job, take a gander at this sultry embrace between two young ladies.
