[Synth-Pop] Heavenly Beat – Hurting

John Pena (formerly of reverb-drenched outfit Beach Fossils) is back with his new project, Heavenly Beat. ‘Hurting’, taken from his debut effort ‘Talent’ shows that Pena’s influences now lie with soft electronic acts such as the Pet Shop Boys and the new wave of Scandinavian synth-pop. The track itself is a smooth and flawlessly-produced slice of ethereal pop, showcasing Pena’s fragile half-whispered vocals to perfection. Definitely one to look out for in the near future, ‘Talent’ is out now.

[Electronica] Bombay Bicycle Club – How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep (Voyeur Remix)

Leeds-based producer Voyeur did this cracking reworking of Bombay Bicycle Club’s ‘How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep’ a little while back, but it’s so smooth and sensual we thought we’d share it. Glacial synths and slow rhythms are what this remix is all about, and they allow Jack Steadman’s tender vocals to become a more haunting and powerful part of the song. The original of ‘How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep’ is on the Bombay Bicycle Club record ‘A Different Kind Of Fix’, out now.

[Rock] The Mountain Goats – Cry For Judas

John Darnielle’s The Mountain Goats are set to drop what must be their billionth studio album (actually their 15th) this fall, and to get us all excited, they’ve put out the sensational ‘Cry For Judas’. The Californian Darnielle is now working with a full horn section behind him, which is a new sound for the band, but it works brilliantly with the jaunty rock instrumentals on the song. Coupled with Darnielle’s lyrics – crammed with religious imagery – ‘Cry For Judas’ is definitely worth getting worked up about. The album ‘Transcendental Youth’ is out on October 2.

[Remix] Kimbra – Settle Down (Polaris At Noon Remix)

Kiwi singer Kimbra is probably best known for her contribution on Goyte’s smash hit ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, but that looks set to change. ‘Settle Down’ is one of the many highlights from her LP ‘Vows’, and has been remixed by the Californian producer Polaris At Noon. Kimbra’s quirky but cute vocals fit in perfectly with this synthy reworking, which has enough of a summery dance vibe to make anyone start desk-dancing as soon as the killer chorus kicks in. Definitely one for the party playlist, Polaris At Noon is giving this remix away here.

In an inevitable turn of events, the global sensation Lana Del Rey has cemented her reputation as indie’s goddess by covering Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ at a live show in Sydney. While the video may not be the best quality, it’s easy to see that Lana has taken the track and put her own style on it – her powerful and emotional vocals are complemented by sweeping strings. Del Rey has spoken of her love of ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ before, and this cover has more than done the song justice. Fingers crossed for a studio version soon.

Long-time favourites of ours The Knife have been remixed by Cry Wolf, much to our electro-loving heart’s delight. The North Carolina pair took ‘You Make Me Like Charity’, from The Knife’s record ‘Deep Cuts’, and have created a dance hit to be reckoned with. Cry Wolf’s dubsteppy take on ‘You Make Me Like Charity’ also lets Karen Dreijer Andersson’s ethereal and distorted vocals shine through, making this remix both haunting and insanely high-octane.
