[Trap] Flume – Insane feat. Moon Holiday (SKULS RIP)

Flume
Insane feat. Moon Holiday (SKULS RIP)

The week just started and we already have ourselves one of the dopest records to show with SKULS‘ Rip of “Insane” by Flume. His collaboration with Moon Holiday got tastefully trapped out by the Bay Area act. Throughout the four and a half minutes, you are taken through four chorus sections, with the one and third being similar, and the other two sporting different qualities that change things up for varied vibes. SKULS is an act that has put out a lot of extremely good songs, and this is one that blows us away even by SKUL standards. It’s got a sound that works for large crowds, but it’s not an in your face with energy type of track. They played it cool and were still able to manage something with a big sound. If you don’t already follow these two on Soundcloud, you best start now.

[Future] Sam Smith – Lay Me Down (Flume Remix)

Sam Smith
Lay Me Down (Flume Remix)

Flume decided to randomly break his silence with a Sam Smith remix today, so you already know it’s going to be a great week. A long silence usually means new material, and Flume has mentioned that this is just the tip of the iceberg of quite a bit of unreleased tracks. This remix doesn’t rely heavily on Sam Smith’s vocals at all interestingly enough, and they sit on the build as the rest of the track propels into the next stratosphere as every Flume track tends to do. The last minute and a half could even be another rendition of “Lay Me Down” entirely, as it shifts into a futuristic R&B tinged rhythm and chops up Sam’s vocals into a pining chant. Needless to say, this is another winner courtesy of Harvey. He’s even announced some new tour dates, so be sure to check out if he is coming to your city on his website!

[Electronic] What So Not – Gemini (feat. George Maple)

What So Not
Gemini Ft. George Maple

Although Flume and Emoh Instead have parted ways as What So Not, their long-anticipated collaborative EP is still on schedule for release and Emoh plans to continue the project, both through shows and new music, under the same name. Today, we finally get the first single, and title track, from their Gemini EP featuring fellow Australian and immensely talented songstress George Maple. In a recent interview with Dancing Astronaut, Emoh Instead suggested that the creative direction on the EP would feature a departure from early What So Not. While “Gemini” certainly fits that description, What So Not’s core elements remain in-tact but with a more chilled-out, atmospheric approach. Maple’s flawless vocals add a unique depth that leads into a minimal synth drop cultivating something that would make for an emotional moment during a live set. Get lost in this intriguing joint above and make sure to catch What So Not live either solo or at your local major music festival–tour dates here.

Flume & Chet Faker
Drop the Game (Sweater Beats Remix)

There’s no denying that the Flume & Chet Faker collaboration from last year was one of 2013’s hottest tracks. It blended the two artists together; raw, soulful lyricism from Chet and sensational production chops from Flume. In a year when the Australian electronic music scene was bursting at the seams, we got our crowning achievement. Fast forward nine months and across the Pacific, and we now have this. Sweater Beats, well-known around the world for his work with the Symbols and HW&W crews, takes on “Drop the Game” and drops it on its head, changing it nearly instantly into an absolute heater. If you thought Flume’s work on the Lorde remix was next level, just wait until you hear this. I’m guaranteeing that this won’t be the last time you hear this song, or Sweater Beats.

IMG_0244

During the Gold Rush, the area where Golden Gate Park currently resides was referred to as the “Outside Lands,” a sprawling seemingly uninhabitable expanse, before being adopted by the city of San Francisco and developed into what is now the gorgeous western portion of the city. Today, Outside Lands carries a whole new meaning as the the premiere music festival of the Bay Area located in the heart of the park. Every event has a unique charm and, for OSL, the magic of San Francisco’s physical and cultural beauty is truly at its core. With breathtaking scenery, quality food/wine and the lingering remnants of the hippie movement, Outside Lands 2014 served as yet another reminder of why the area has become, and has for so long been, such a desirable destination even with its famously cold summer weather.

Just over two weeks have passed since we took our final steps out of what was the most popular OSL in the event’s history. In the days following a festival, the mundanity of everyday life can become particularly evident. Luckily, with concerts, there’s always an artist’s music to revive the excitement of your most memorable, albeit sometimes least remembered, moments. This year’s Outside Lands lineup featured an incredible diversity in artistic styles making for a broad range of experiences to look back on. Join us as we take revisit a dozen of our top highlights from the weekend through photos and songs. Continue reading

Rid U

You may not know the name, but you’ve definitely her voice before. Moon Holiday is Australia’s fastest rising starlet and her productions are starting to pick up steam in the land down under. She is most notably known for cowriting and singing on Flume’s smash hit “Insane,” however her solo endeavors are easily laudable as well. Her debut EP was sensational and now she brings us “Rid U”, the first single for her follow up project entitled “Second Life.” Over a dark beat perfect for late night vibing, Ward brings a haunting, almost ethereal performance that’s sure to get you hooked on the up-and-coming vocalist.

[Remix] Flume – Sleepless ft. Jezzabell Doran (Manila Killa Remix)

Sleepless (Manila Killa Remix)
Flume Feat. Jezzabell Doran

21 year old electronic Wunderkind, Flume, has seen his proverbial stock soar to unimaginable heights since an assemblage of his singles went viral in late 2011, the ultra success of his debut album hitting number-one in his native Australia (recently ousting One Direction as a matter of fact) and specifically, the gargantuan success of “Sleepless” featuring vocals from Jezzabel Doran. Since charting one of our favorite purely electronic albums of 2012 with a self-titled LP, “Sleepless” has proven to be a track with which an absurd amount of producers have gotten their hands on the stems and remixed to a near coma. Normally a remix of “Sleepless” wouldn’t grab hold of our Ninja attention span, but today’s offering from D.C. by way of the Phillipines producer Manila Killa, was a production begging not to be overlooked. Quite the eclectic remixer, Manila Killa has touched up a number of contrasting bands and producers. From Coldplay to Chromeo to The xx and now Flume, this young beat savant has shown quite an affinity for the remix game, breathing new life into every one of his impeccable selections. Manila Killa comes at “Sleepless” from a picturesque, “Nu-Gaze” angle and has delivered one of the most pure and catchiest remixes of the Aussie’s classic tune. Download the track, for the price of a ‘Facebook Like’ here, and be on the lookout for more hot sauce from Manila Killa in the not-so-distant future.
