[R&B R.LUM.R – Surfacing LP

Nashville artist R.LUM.R‘s triumphant debut album Surfacing is an alternative R&b treasure. The thirteen track project not only shows off the Island Record artists song writing ability but also his versatility and the power of his falsetto. The engulfing album is emotional at times, and thoughtful at others.

Surfacing features buzzed about pre-released singles such as “How This Feels,” “Boys Should Never Cry,” “Cold,” and the most recent release which was also his directorial debut “Lonely”, which all explore sensitive emotional issues of vulnerability, self-awareness, male identity, and mental health. On top of the prior releases it is filled with a slew of new bops, like the stand out “Happy” or the title track “Surfacing”. In addition to the release of his debut album, R.LUM.R has also announced The Surfacing Tour, which will be his first major headlining tour across North America. The 5-week, 26-city run across the U.S. and Canada will open February 20th in Nashville, and will wrap in Charlotte, NC on March 28th. Head over to his website to see the full set of tour dates and to pick up your tickets. Stream Surfacing by R.LUM.R below.

Frustrated

Something about R.LUM.R is just so relatable. The world of R&B and soul is filled to the brim with all sorts of differing messages, ranging from love to lust, political to protest, and many more. “Frustrated” touches on the effects of heartbreak through its compelling production and blunt lyrics.

One line in particular says it all:

I’m not alright, right now. I’ve never been the type that you can just abuse

R.LUM.R has no issues with expressing his exact feelings here. The emotion is clear, and the resounding instrumentation is an essential counterpart to getting his point across. There’s a striking similarity to Gallant on this tune, which actually marks a change in pace for R.LUM.R that pushes his singing range into another level that some of his previous tunes haven’t. “Frustrated” is monumental in his progression as a singer and artist, and we’re hope to hear a lot more from R.LUM.R.

Tell Me

R.LUM.R has long been supported by the ninjas, so when we saw that he put out a new single, we were all excited. “Tell Me” is the Tennessee artist’s newest musical creation that was produced by Super Duper, a fellow Nashville musician.

“Tell Me” has R.LUM.R going with a bit more alternative meets indie vibe. He keeps his R&B influences but they don’t act as the sonic centerpiece for this single. By bringing something a little different he keeps fans on their toes with some variety, but he always satisfies. Some fans are hailing this as his best work yet, and we’re not going to argue against that. He’s had a ton of great records, but he continues to get better and better as he creates. It’s only a matter of time before everyone hops aboard the R.LUM.R rollercoaster of feels. We would say bandwagon, but he’s just too fresh for that cliche.

Doghouse Records dropped a superb track from R.LUM.R called “Nothing New” last week. “Nothing New” is a sweet alternative electronic original that was produced by Ethnikids. The beat is absolutely sick, which isn’t very surprising given Ethnikids’ involvement on the record. R.LUM.R’s vocal performance is something to be cherished. Ravishing lyrics are expressed by the Nashville artist, whose dynamic record is something we wouldn’t mind coming across on top 40 radio stations. It’s one of those tracks that we hope more than just the underground gets a hold of, as it’s not watered down with anything. Rather, it’s genuine artistry that conveys deep emotions. Grab the single on iTunes if you are enjoying it as much as we are.

When you realize an act has other projects, it’s a glorious day. Although we premiered R.LUM.R in the past, his direct connection as a production member of Ethnikids, who produced “Be Honest,” was unknown to us. Orlando’s music man could slip that passed us, but couldn’t slip a track under our noses. When we heard “Be Honest,” its freeing innocence captivated our ears. A slow soulful jam is what we get with this self-released single. The vocal performance is truly magnificent, as he maneuvers between a soft side, and one where he can stretch his pipes a bit. With the weekend here, and the big chilling underway, we’ve had this one on repeat for a while now. It’s your turn to do the same, and if you’d like to purchase yourself a copy, you can do so on iTunes.
