[Hip-Hop] ZMoney & Danny Brown – Jug & Finesse

ZMoney & Danny Brown
Jug & Finesse (prod. Jneal)

Just in time for the weekend, two of the midwest’s most ratchet, Chicago’s ZMoney and Detroit’s Danny Brown, have teamed up for an anthem of sorts titled “Jug & Finesse.”  With the assistance of a typically hard-hitting instrumental from Jneal, each rapper demonstrates their unique, yet contrasting, styles.

ZMoney, who’s Rich B4 Rap earned him a cosign from Drake, carries an unconventional trapped-out delivery that falls in line with the rise of artists like Young Thug. Danny, on the other hand, is in a league of his own with exceptional technical skills and an unmatchably strange energy. The two styles unite in an unexpectedly awesome way making for a Friday-worthy slap. Enjoy the stream and turn up above

[Hip-Hop] Danny Brown & Mndsgn – Sweeney Song

DANNY BROWN & MNDSGN
SWEENEY SONG

Already riding high off his critically acclaimed album, Old, Danny Brown literally had no reason to release any more music this year. But here we are, and boy are we glad we found this. Technically this track isn’t new, but more an unreleased gem. Unsurprisingly, the eccentric Detroit emcee effortlessly shreds apart this ominous Mndsgn instrumental that sounds like it was ripped straight out of the Twilight Zone.

“Sweeney Song” will be featured on the upcoming Classic Drug References Vol. 1 box set, and you can learn more about the song’s inception from Sweeney Kovar, who used to run the now defunct Classic Drug References blog:

Danny was my longshot for this project. By the time I got moving on this he’d already signed with Fool’s Gold and was about to drop XXX, which would establish him as one of the fiercest MC’s out. I emailed and DM’d to no avail. One day I decided to try something really crazy and picked up the phone and called him. The stars were aligned and a rapper actually answered his phone. In all of two minutes he agreed to cut a track. I emailed him a .zip of beats I’d culled from the homies and about a week later I got a sendspace link entitled “SWEENY SONG.” He had taken a Mndsgn beat and absolutely ripped it to shreds. It’s been so long since he cut it that it now sounds like vintage Danny to me, which of course I love. I fixed the typo in the title and ran with it.

Set to release on November 25th, the compilation will contain three 7″ records featuring Danny Brown, BluKnxwledgeQuelle Chris, Ras G, and more. Also included will be a zine which will have exclusive interviews from Mr. Porter and A$AP Yams. Make sure to grab yourself a pre-order of the project here, and also check out the ingenious interactive video for Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone,” which also features a cameo from Danny Brown among other TV personalities.

Side A (Old)

Danny Brown‘s new album, Old, is due out at the end of this month, and we’re eagerly counting down the days until its release. Today we’re treated with the project’s intro, “Side A,” a menacingly manic single that fits right in the Detroit spitter’s lane. The track’s style seems to be a throwback to Danny’s 2010 breakout project, The Hybrid, and a chorus that claims “They want that old Danny Brown” all but confirms those suspicions. Check out the single above, and make sure you have your pre-orders ready for Old‘s September 30th release.

[Remix] Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends (Jake One Remix) (Feat. Danny Brown)

Portugal. The Man
Evil Friends (Jake One Remix Feat. Danny Brown)

If it’s “Evil Friends” you’re looking for, you could do much worse than Danny Brown. Danny isn’t shy when it comes to tackling beats, which explains why his list of collaborations includes names as diverse as Purity Ring and Charli XCX. Still, Portugal. The Man is unexplored territory for the Detroit spitter, but with the help of producer Jake One, the collaboration manages to work perfectly.

Flipping the title track of the group’s latest album, Jake One captures some of the more downtempo moments of the original, while adding in some steady drum patterns to transform it into a hip-hop ready soundscape. Danny handles the rest of the legwork, delivering some energetic yet effortless bars to help set the mood. It’s a great reminder of the diversity he employs, and the track helps to whet our appetite a bit as we patiently wait for Old, dropping September 30th. And if you haven’t listened to it yet, make sure to grab Portugal. The Man’s Evil Friends, in stores now.
