[Mixtape] Busta Rhymes & Q-Tip – The Abstract & The Dragon

After much anticipation and an acclaimed single, veteran emcees Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip finally treat fans to their new collaborative mixtape, The Abstract & The Dragon. These two legends are no strangers to being part of a group–Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, and Busta from Leaders of the New School–before making a name for themselves as solo acts. Now, the two minds come together to deliver a 28 track tape that includes the new Kanye West and Lil Wayne featured single “Thank You,” as well as some old favorites like “Vivrant Thing”.

Christmas definitely comes early this year and this mix delivers classics, high-profiled collaborations, remixes, and new material, including features from Missy Elliot, Redman, Raekwon, Talib Kweli and more. Enjoy something different to fill your stocking (and playlists) for the holiday season as you wait for Tip’s LP Last Zulu and Busta’s Extinction Level Event 2 to drop in 2014. Peep the download link below, and make sure to check out a few of our favorites from the project as well.

The Hip-Hop Dojo [Vol. 15]

Guess who’s baaaaaaccckk? Did you miss me? The Hip-Hop Dojo’s finally ready to reopen its doors for business, and I’ve got plenty to share with you today. I’ve traveled far and wide, sailed across the seven seas, climbed the highest peaks, and braved the hottest deserts to hone my craft, learning from the very best, meditating, and planning my return (basically picture the whole training sequence from Batman Begins). In all honesty though, I appreciate your patience over the last few months, and hope I can finally get back on my grind to deliver you the freshest hip-hop product on a consistent basis.

So without further ado, let’s get this party started. This very special fifteenth edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo features plenty of familiar names, from hip-hop heavyweights like Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, Raekwon and Kendrick Lamar, to Dojo frequenters like Kings Dead, MeLo-X, Audio PushTito Lopez, and Devine Carama. We’ve even got a few fresh faces for y’all like Michael Christmas, Dom McLennon, A La $ole, GoldLink, and Fresco Nerd. Given the sheer size of our comeback playlist (over 45 tracks!), I’ll keep it light on the words this week to conserve your precious time and keep you focused on the music. However, if you like what you hear from any of these artists and want to check out any relevant projects from them, I’ll include a link roll below.

We hope you guys enjoyed our fifteenth edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo as much as we did! As always, you can send all submissions/suggestions to baseer@themusicninja.com and ash@themusicninja.com.

[Neo-Soul] Hiatus Kaiyote – Nakamarra (Feat. Q-Tip)

Hiatus Kaiyote
Nakamarra feat. Q-Tip

While this might be the first time we’re featuring Hiatus Kaiyote on our pages, we’re hoping this isn’t the last. We may have missed the Australian quartet’s Tawk Tomahawk EP last year, but lucky for us they’re gearing up for a re-release on their new label, Flying Buddha. The marquee single of course is this one right here, a remix of “Nakamarra” featuring the amazingly talented Q-Tip. Getting a co-sign from such a legendary figure in the music industry is definitely encouraging, but not surprising once you hear (lead singer) Nai Palm‘s soothing, sun-dipped vocals. Although the band markets themselves as “future soul,” the loungey vibes on “Nakamarra” seem to hearken back to a simpler time that serve as a reminder of why we fell in love with the genre in the first place. With the revamped version of Tawk Tomahawk set to arrive tomorrow, it might be a keen idea to check out the original release before purchasing. Now excuse me while I fantasize about what A Tribe Called Quest‘s reunion project would sound like.

[Pop] Fergie, Q-Tip & GoonRock – A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)

Fergie, Q-Tip & GoonRock
A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)

When it was first announced that Jay-Z would be executive producing the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby, we knew big things were to follow. There’s no way we could have ever expected this though. The tracklist alone was enough to get us salivating, but now we have a real sample with “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got).” Featuring the odd trio of Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock, the dance floor ready number effectively merges jazz age sensibilities with modern flare. The song exemplifies what’s already been exhibited in all the previous trailers for the film: the extravagance of the roaring 20’s combined with a contemporary edge meant to appeal to younger audiences in 2013. If you enjoyed your first true taste of the Gatsby soundtrack, make sure to check out the album sampler below, along with the full tracklist after the jump.

[FULL STREAM] Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne

There has been a lot of hype for the collaboration of Hip/hop giants, Jay-Z and Kanye West joining forces to produce the highly anticipated Watch The Throne. Does it live up to the hype? The creative production of Kanye West is definitely apparent in the album and Jay-Z never dissapointes with his connected and fluid lyricism. For me a lot is hit or miss, where a couple tracks immediately stand out better than others.

You can listen to the album yourself below and you can find it on iTunes from today on:

[Melodic Mash-Up] Tor – The CN Tower Can Work It Out (Final Fantasy F. Q-Tip)

Tor The CN Tower Can Work It Out (Final Fantasy F. Q-Tip

This one-off remix samples the stuttered rhodes, vocals and strings of Toronto Violinist Final Fantasy’s track ‘The CN Tower Belongs to The Dead’ and mashes it up with the acapella ‘Work It Out’ from legendary MC, Q-Tip.

Many times two songs might go well together but often still sound like they are 2 different shoes walking at the same pace. Tor has delicately interwined these two tracks to produce a much unified result. I am completely blown away by this masterpiece of mash-up because not only is it technically flawless but it is a melodic machine of soft intstrumentals paired with soft digestable rhymes from ‘legenday’ MC, Q-Tip.
