Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive (Viceroy Edit) [TMN EXCLUSIVE]

Bee Gees
Stayin' Alive (Viceroy Edit)

As the old adage goes, all good things must come to an end. While it’s always bittersweet to bring one of our residencies to a close, it usually means we’re bringing you a taste of something that’s never seen the light of day. Today is no different than what you’ve come to expect over the past two years.

In true warm-weather fashion, the Sultan of Summer, Viceroy, is offering up something he’s had in his arsenal for years. If you’ve seen him live, which we certainly hope you have, you’ve probably heard this gem mixed into his sets. It’s his edit of the Bee Gees 1977 monster hit, “Stayin’ Alive,” and it’s absolutely perfect for your weekend beach, pool, or BBQ plans.

To make sure you spend the rest of your summer in proper “summertime all the time” fashion, Viceroy is also hooking this up as a free download. Make sure to send him a tweet and give him some love.

Viceroy discusses his roots, the rat race, and a refreshing Pimm’s Cup [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

It wouldn’t be a proper Music Ninja Residency without a lengthy chat with our featured artist. As you’re already aware, we brought in the Sultan Of Summer to help us kick off the best season of the year and before the most iconic summer holiday, we’re offering up a little insight into the man behind Viceroy.

TMN: Hey Austen – thanks for taking some time to sit down with us today. How’s the start of your summer going so far?

Viceroy: So far, so good! San Francisco has not your normal summer weather. I don’t know if you’re too familiar with how our weather patterns work. We have an Indian summer that’s September and October, and our coldest part of the year is actually regular summer. But, it’s been unbelievable, so far. It’s made it hard to want to do any work.

TMN: We’re really excited to have you as our Resident Artist this month. We looked back, and we’ve been covering you for the past four years. Is it hard to believe that you’ve been at it for that long?

Viceory: Yeah – it’s dawned on me that I’ve been at it for that long. The landscape has changed so much since I started. It’s a little more of a rat race than it ever used to be, but it’s still exciting and fun.

TMN: Let’s go back a little bit further than when you started getting blog coverage. How did the “Viceroy” sound come to be? Can you shed some light on your musical history?

Viceroy: I played instruments when I was growing up, and everything like that – guitar, bass, and that kind of stuff. In 2009 I studied abroad in Rome, and that was before electronic music took off on a mainstream level in the United States.

I was drunk the second week of school and at some sort of club or lounge with my friends, and I told one of the DJs, “I want a job here!” I was completely wasted. I went and talked to the manager and he gave me a job on Tuesday nights bringing in Americans. I wake up the next night and was like, “oh my god, I’ve never DJ’d or promoted before. What the hell am I doing?”

’Music Ninja Radio #11 – Treasure Island Preview’

Welcome back, October.

Festival season has officially wound down to a close and we Californians are bundling up for another frigid winter – which may eventually dip into the 50s (gasp!).

Music fans near and far look toward cloudy skies and feel a deep nostalgia for carefree summer days spent romping through fairgrounds from Detroit to San Diego to Washington to Chicago and even here in San Francisco. Fortunately, there is one last hurrah every year to hold us over: Treasure Island Music Festival.

[Electronic] Giraffage & Viceroy – Impression of You (feat. Patrick Baker)

Giraffage & Viceroy
Impression Of You (feat. Patrick Baker)

Producer collaborations tend to take on one of two forms–either composers go back-and-forth transitioning between styles or they blend their techniques to create something completely novel. In the case of Giraffage and Viceroy‘s new single, released on Dim Mak Records, it’s most certainly the latter. “Impression of You” sees a collision of Giraffage’s playful, yet emotional, R&B-tinted steez and Viceroy’s jazzy, summery vibes for an enchanting tune. Giraffage’s signature synth-work and video-game inspired elements open the tune but once the track fills out Viceroy’s radiant style quickly emerges. The tune is tied together nicely by Patrick Baker, who’s name you may recognize from his recent Lane 8 collaboration. The wavey, chilled-out feeling of the song combined with Baker’s romantic crooning create an interesting combination–a sort of summer fling anthem.

P.S. If you dig Giraffage as much as we do, make sure to check out our interview with him from last year.

Viceroy (ft. K. Flay) – Back At The Start (Delusion Remix) [TMN Premiere]

Viceroy
Back At The Start (Delusion Remix)

We’re no stranger to Viceroy and his newest K. Flay assisted hit, “Back At The Start.” Today, however, we’re excited to show you a fairly fresh face that flipped the tune on its head into a smooth and futuristic groove. Delusion has remixed Oh Wonder and Odesza previously, which are equally as gorgeous and silky, so he isn’t afraid to tackle prime source material. This new endeavor knocks with purpose, but is balanced out by a softer side that sets itself apart from the original in the best way possible. It’s as strong as it is seductive, and every element across the song’s spectrum is dutifully placed with purpose and poise. Delusion has commanded his sound within only a few tracks, so there’s no telling how far he’ll be able to go. Give yourself a much needed break before the weekend hits with this stunning remix by Delusion, and be ready to hear his name around much more often.
