Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 13]

Valentine’s Day is this Friday, and depending on your situation, that last statement probably elicited some very different reactions. For most of you out there (we hope), you’ve had this date circled on your calendars for weeks now, and have already got the perfect day planned right down to the last detail, while others undoubtably are panicking at the prospect of  having only five days to throw something together. Finally, there’s those of you who have now come to the crushing realization that–like our friend Dawson James Van Der Beek above–you’re destined to lead a sad and lonely life, and will most likely spend that day drowning your sorrows in a heart shaped box of assorted Russell Stover chocolates. Regardless of what category you fall under, we guarantee that we’ve got the perfect playlist here to make your special day that much more special.  From puppy love to heartache, contributions from Oceaán, Gallant, Jamie Lewis, K-Young, Aches, vaisle, Giraffage, Genius and salute have you covered, and are sure to help power the soundtrack for whatever the night’s festivities may hold for you.

[R&B] Miguel – Simplethings

Miguel
Simplethings

Despite the stardom and accolades that come with being Miguel, the crooner proves that he can still appreciate the “Simplethings” in life with his most recent single. Created for the soundtrack for HBO’s GirlsGirls, Vol. 2: All Adventurous Women Do…, this new tune features the singer describing the desired traits in his ideal mate. In a perfect world, he’d love to have someone to lay with, laugh with and (of course) smoke with, that’s also real and true. It sounds easy enough, and we hope Miguel eventually finds that special someone. In the meantime, we can listen to him sing about it below. You can pre-order Girls, Vol. 2: All Adventurous Women Do… on iTunes now, which also includes contributions from Beck, Vampire Weekend, Lily Allen, Jenny Lewis and more.

[Album Review] Janelle Monáe – The Electric Lady

’Janelle Monáe – Electric Lady ft. Solange’
’Janelle Monáe – Dorothy Dandridge Eyes ft. Esperanza Spalding’

As a child of a drug-addicted father with a Kansas City upbringing, and after early days spent in New York City, Philadelphia, and eventually Atlanta trying to make it into the music, it was apparent that Janelle Monáe’s past was more elaborate and obscured than most artists in the industry. Instead of dwelling on the struggle or waiting for a hero to come rescue her, Monáe became her own super-hero in the form of a George Clinton and David Bowie inspired android named Cindi Mayweather. Armed with a classically trained voice, black and white suit, and a creativity that has not been seen since the 80’s, Monáe’s alter-ego became more than just a form of escapism, but a savior from the ever-growing monotony of today’s R&B genre.

With her major label sophomore release The Electric Lady, Monáe continues to take listeners on a grand journey through the inner workings of her mental space. Similar to her 2010 ArchAndroid release, the android tale continues but with a far more personal take along a course through R&B, funk, rock, jazz, and rap. Bringing in a wide array of guests and familiar artists, Monáe conveys a fictional landscape that is both a nostalgic venture into the great sounds of R&B’s past and a pop-oriented, radio romp of songs about love and heartbreak.

[R&B] Janelle Monáe – PrimeTime (Feat. Miguel)

Janelle Monáe
PrimeTime ft. Miguel

This might just be the best duet you’ll hear all year. Bold words I know, but despite what initial trepidations you may have, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more talented pair of vocalists out there right now. One reason why it works so well is that Janelle Monáe and Miguel are able to share the spotlight effectively without stepping over each other’s toes, which is a tough feat to accomplish in compositions like this. The soulfully charged ballad tugs on your heartstrings through lyrics like “It’s a primetime for our love/ Ain’t nobody peeking but the stars above,” making “PrimeTime” the perfect tune as you wrap up your summer romance. Ready yourself for the release of Monáe’s The Electric Lady set to drop on September 10th with additional features from Prince, Erykah Badu, Solange Knowles, and Esperanza Spalding.

[R&B] Miguel – Adorn (Remix) (Feat. Jessie Ware)

Miguel
Adorn Feat Jessie Ware

Miguel lit up the airwaves last summer with his sultry single “Adorn.” Now it looks like he’s trying to replicate that dominance, repackaging the track with some added vocals from TMN favorite, Jessie Ware. While the UK crooner doesn’t add much to the song in terms of depth, her presence is certainly welcome. The simple analogy is like having the perfect hot fudge sundae, and then adding some sprinkles on top. You can NEVER go wrong with sprinkles. We have no idea where this one will live, but all we know is we have a new excuse to bump this all summer again.

[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #35

If you’re looking to start off your week in the most relaxing way possible, this installment of the Chill Dojo will be sure to deliver with some of the most mellow features to date.

It was looking to be a difficult decision for track of the week for #35 until the music of Dutch duo The Planty Herbs flowed through the speakers. ‘There’s Us” may just be the most chilled song ever to grace the dojo, and utilises a sound that epitomises the sensation that this playlist hopes to bring. It could be looped for hours on end and still maintain the same calming effect and amazing vibes it does upon first listen. From a song whose sound represents what we’re all about to one whose title does, the next tune, “Lazy Sunday” fortunately delivers on its promise to provide a killer Sunday feel. Mastefully crafted by German producer XTRAFUNK, a quick browse through his Soundcloud revealed a wealth of other great additions which carry similar feelings of bliss. If this has built up your cravings for disco vibes, then look no further than Louis La Roche to remedy your funky desires with his remix of the massive hit from Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding. It seems European artists are dominating the dojo this week, and Norway’s Cashmere Cat has become a definite favourite of late, and has seen his popularity skyrocket thanks to consistent displays of unique sounds and astounding production talent. For those of you who missed it in the Trap Dojo a little while ago, his latest remix of “Do You”  is an amazing mix of sexy synths and drumwork which work in pure harmony with the smooth vocals of Miguel.

There’s plenty more to write about this week, but this array of magical music is better heard than read, so delve into it at your own leisure. Peace out.

DJ Snake puts a smile on my face with every release, this time sampling Junior Senior, that second drop though. So Brillz remixed RUN DMT, need I say more? We featured this Victor Niglio remix of “Who” yesterday, but it’s so fire we decided to share it again. Infuse, is featured twice today with this increible Original is titled “Get Enough”, and a remix of James Blake.  Village is back with yet another melodic masterpiece, this one is titled “Love On The Line”. Flume + Chet Faker + Ta-ku = PURE GOLD. Guess what? TNGHT actually released something, and it’s a mind blowing track titled “Acrylics”. Branchez has been on a tear lately, and he doesn’t let up with this unique original titled, “That Ish”.
