PLAZA – Youth [TMN PREMIERE]

PLAZA
Youth

With Halloween now in the rearview, we’re unfortunately forced to embrace the upcoming winter months. As the snow starts to fall, plenty of music lovers turn to darker tunes to match the bleak, dormant landscapes, and chilling winds that force us into layer upon layer of clothing. For those of you who shun the colder months, choosing an angsty approach, we have the perfect tune for you.

PLAZA is only three tracks into their career, today’s included, and they’ve already cemented quite the stamp on the industry. With support from BBC Radio 1, Radio X, and Amazing Radio, as well as countless online tastemakers, this teenage 4-piece isn’t showing any signs of slowing up. Especially with what we believe is their best track yet, premiering here, today.

“Youth” comes to life with emphatic snare hits, welcoming in vocals reminiscent of some of our favorite 80s New Wave artists. Yet, those brooding lyrics and hazy vocal treatments are nicely balanced out by soaring guitar work and crashing percussion. The end result is a sonic treat you’ll want to hold onto throughout the winter and beyond.

PLAZA will be releasing “Youth” this Friday through Beyond the Wall. Follow them on Facebook so you can keep pace with this release, as well as future recordings and shows.

[Mix] RL Grime – Halloween V + Pharrell Intro

RL Grime
Halloween V

We could go into a long and contrived story about the origins of Halloween, the veil between the living and dead being its thinnest, or drone on about the absurd amount of epic parties that spread from coast-to-coast this weekend. Instead, though, we’re just gonna let you dig right into this one.

RL Grime is back with his 5th installment of his Halloween mix and it far exceeds our expectations, which is no easy task, given the pedigree of these annual treats. With an intro from Pharrell, a cameo from RL Stein, and a seamless collection of bass heavy tunes, it’s everything you need to carry you through into one of the best weekends of the year.

Seven Lions talks touring, Opeth, and Starry Night Stout [TMN EXCLUSIVE]

11

We took a trip down memory lane to see just how long we’ve been covering the larger-than-life basslines and heavenly, melodic synths crafted by Jeff Montalvo, better known as Seven Lions. It’s been over four years since he first popped up on our radar, and since then, he’s graced the pages of our site time and time again.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s kept tabs on his impressive list of successes over the years, from stellar releases, to unforgettable festival performances. His brand presence has become a household commodity, with many eagerly expecting to catch his sets, whether it be at their favorite club, or the most sought-after festival.

As we continue our Residency with Jeff, we decided it would be a good time to catch back up with him after all these years.

TMN: First off, thank you for coming onboard as our Resident Artist for the month of October. As long time fans, it’s an absolute pleasure to have you. It’s also been three years since we last interviewed you, so it’s great to catch up. Let’s start things off by talking about your most recent release, “Rush Over Me” which you worked on with Illenium and Said the Sky – two Colorado boys. How did this collaboration come to be?

SL: Actually, I had met Trevor in Denver a long time ago when he gave me a flashdrive. The funny thing is – I get those a lot, but a lot of times I don’t have the time to actually listen to them. With Trevor’s, I actually did and it was really good music.

I hit them up and was like, “Hey, I need some fresh ears on this. Do you guys want to collab on this?” Then they worked on it, then I worked on it, then they worked on it.

[House] Eric Sharp ft. Zhao – The Thirst

Eric Sharp
The Thirst ft. Zhao

Falling somewhere in between a house lover’s delicious dream come true and a 80s pop enthusiast’s party-starting secret weapon, “The Thirst” nestles in between generations of music lovers, giving an experience that says “age is but a number. Let’s fuckin’ dance!”

We wouldn’t expect much less from LA-based Eric Sharp, though, as he’s continually impressed us with previous vocal-driven tunes. At times, they showcase a breadth of musical tastes, casually flirting with the experimental side of music. Other times, they fuse house and pop together seamlessly, providing a sound worthy of the masses. This release grabbed our attention immidiately, leading us to the groovy, live-recorded bassline and and guitar work, much like a cartoon bear being lead by the wafting scent of a freshly made pie.

Part of the intrigue of this track, in particular, is the addition of multi-instrumentalist Zhao, who not only brings live instrumentation, but his alluring voice, as well. After crafting this hip-shaker, they gave it a few test runs out and about in the City of Angels. As you could guess, the reception was on-point, hence the release with Liftoff Records.

Aircrafting – Temecula [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

Aircrafting
Temecula

Originally crafted as a DIY recording project between Jon Tehel and Daniel Jacobs, Aircrafting has since grown into a full, five-piece band with the addition of Nicole Lawrence, Pat Floyd, and Lee Bones. Back on October 7th, this Brooklyn-based group released their first LP together, with “Temecula” being showcased as the 2nd single from the collection.

Dreamers was impressively self-produced and tracked live to 1/4″ tape in their Brooklyn studio in just two days. We’ve had a chance to delve into the diverse and highly engaging recording as a whole, which was released by Sinking Spaceships Recordings, but today is less about the collection, and more about the single and this newly released music video.

Leading in with some lazy guitar strums and an woeful lead riff, “Temecula” comes to life quickly with a beautifully somber soundscape. It’s Americana at its finest, calling on memories of long, late-night drives, dusty dive bars, and greasy spoon diners that seemingly dot every exit along our country’s highways. The accompanying video pairs perfectly with the sorrowful musical vibes, showing a painful trip to spread a loved ones ashes. The combination will most assuredly tug on your heart strings, so make sure you’re in the proper place and frame of mind to watch. After all, we wouldn’t want you shedding some tears in front of your co-workers.

Mat Hunsley – Fires [TMN PREMIERE]

Mat Hunsley
Fires

The changing of the season seemingly brings us to different musical selections, sometimes entirely intentional, and other times purely coincidental. The falling of the leaves push away the carefree and lighthearted tunes carried through the summer months, welcoming in more complex works, both lyrically and musically. Today brings an example of a pensive piece perfect for the greying skies and chilly weather, and it’s brought to you by a brand new artist, Mat Hunsley.

“Fires” is the lead single from this young man’s debut EP, To Being Free, which is already available to pre-order from iTunes. Showcasing his ability to harness personal experiences for the sake of storytelling, Hunsley breathes life into each and every word, skillfully displaying his folk-centric songwriting abilities and encapsulating vocal cadence. Set to the backdrop of only a softly strummed guitar and accentuating strings, you’re left to only focus on his message and nothing more.

Hunsley is already garnering the attention of tastemakers in the UK and US, with the rest of the world surely catching on soon. Make sure you follow him on Facebook so you can be in the know from the get-go.
