[Podcast] Music Ninja Radio – Episode 46 (Recap)

Music Ninja Radio
Episode 46

Music Ninja Radio is a weekly podcast broadcast live on San Francisco’s BFF.fm — Best Frequencies Forever. You can tune in here every Friday from 4-6PM PT / 7-9ET.

Last Friday’s show marks the one year anniversary since we took our talents to the airwaves of BFF in San Francisco’s best kept secret(alley). From deep in the Mission District, through the port of a pirate ship, we’ve been bringing the best of the best to your ears – Best Frequencies Forever wasn’t voted ‘Best Radio Station‘ in the Bay Area for nothing!

With that in mind, now seems as good a time as any to start providing our fellow Ninja readers with a weekly recap of our show, Music Ninja Radio aka Dojo by the Bay. Curating the best releases each week, themed shows coinciding with specific artist releases, and a fair amount of throwbacks sprinkled throughout, Music Ninja Radio has something for everyone.

The full show’s playlist can be found on the website’s archive here.

[Beautiful] Odesza – Memories That You Call (Blackbird Blackbird Remix)

ODESZA
Memories That You Call (BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD Remix)

It wouldn’t be entirely accurate to say that any track on Odesza‘s In Return has been overlooked considering it was one of the most popular electronic albums of 2014. That being said, I’ve always felt “Memories That You Call,” especially after hearing it live, was the most powerful cut slipping through the cracks amongst radio hits like “Say My Name” and “Sun Models.” As a result, few producers, besides Henry Krinkle, have elected to remix it rather choosing to focus on the tracks offered up for Odesza’s official remix competitions.

Just a few minutes ago, though, San Francisco producer Blackbird Blackbird dropped an absolutely gorgeous, dynamic take on “Memories That You Call.” His re-imagination opens with the original’s ethereal vocal samples accompanied by glistening sonic elements before building up in a similar fashion as Odesza’s composition but dropping into a tropical groove. Rather than constrain the style to that genre, though, Blackbird brings back the original’s enormous chorus around the 2:49 mark re-layering and re-pitching vocals along the way. That transition drowns back into a beautiful house culmination of the song’s broad-ranged moving parts.

Blackbird’s rendition of “Memories That You Call” proves the perfect example of retaining the best of a song while adding a completely new flavor and cadence. Take a break from your mid-week stresses and soak in the radiance of this fantastic remix. You can grab a free download here.

[Electronica] QT – Hey QT (Blackbird Blackbird Remix)

Hey QT (Blackbird Blackbird Remix)

Blackbird Blackbird has got to be one of most unpredictable producers in the game. Coming out with a remix of this quirky tune titled “Hey QT”, the SF-based musician once again surprises us with his unbelievable talent. The tune is brushed up with a soft trap beat, and the catchy melody is sampled throughout the track for the buildup and the drop. He definitely made this track his own with these complex maneuvers, and we can definitely see this being played in his upcoming shows. Big ups to Blackbird Blackbird and all that he offers to the industry!

[Chillwave] Blackbird Blackbird – Young (feat. Britt Warner)

Young (Feat. Britt Warner)

San Francisco-based producer Mikey Maramag a.k.a Blackbird Blackbird has always been an innovative to the indie electronic scene. Following his US tour, this is the first we’ve heard of him since. In this new tune titled “Young”, Mikey features vocals from the LA singer Britt Warner, magically tweaking her vocals to perfection in mixture with the uplifting chillwave sound. The signature stairs-like ascending repetitive synths start off the song. The fast paced electronic beat comes in with Britt’s vocals, and they are occasionally morphed into this vacuum robotic sound that echoes really well with the song.

The piercing synths dominate the entirety of this new track. We’d like to think that this one is out of the ordinary for the talented producer, but we really enjoy the fact that he’s exploratory and where he is going with the direction of his music. He’s a one man band and he can really do it all.
