[Chill/Future/Trap] The Weeknd – Often (Free n Losh Remix)

The Weeknd
Often (Free n Losh Remix)

Rolling off of the wave of success experienced on their first original release, “Lost”, Free n Losh have returned to remix “Often” from one of R&B’s most intriguing artists, and a favorite of quite a few Ninjas here; The Weeknd. Perhaps some of the most versatile electronic producers at the moment with credits on Mac Miller tunes, an official Pretty Lights remix and multiple trips to the almighty Hype Machine Top Ten charts through gleaming and cutting edge takes on dance genres; Free n Losh have peeled back yet another layer of their collective production psyche with this latest remix. The Canadian duo blends a distinct steel drum over a luscious two-step melody and  and layer it all seductively amongst a sea of contorted snare kicks and hi-claps for a sound completely their own. With every passing release Free n Losh continually impress the hell out of our ears, and this cut might be one of our favorite from their entire catalogue. Grab the free download here, and slip into something sexy for this one, it might get a little hot.

[Album Review] The Weeknd – Kiss Land

’The Weeknd – Adaptation’

A modern day Michael Jackson may have been reincarnated into The Weeknd. Ok, maybe not as legendary but the artist, also known as Abel Tesfaye, embodies a darker, troubled, and more realistic version of the R&B singer for this generation. After dropping the 3-part mixtape series House of Balloons/Thursday/Echoes of Silence and building up a well-deserved following, the Toronto artist trades in sexual overtones for a more polished sound on his XO and Universal Republic Records debut, Kiss Land.

With minimal press and promotion, other than the slight drama with fellow Toronto labelmate Drake, The Weeknd lets his music speak for itself on Kiss Land. Considering that this is technically his 4th full length album, the 23 year-old singer has developed a signature sound of falsetto vocals, atmospheric synths, and innovative textures revolving around relationships, sex, addiction, intimacy, and drug-induced trysts with groupies or strippers just looking for a night with stardom. There is an undeniable sadness in his tones and lyrics that only a lack of love and true intimacy can evoke with a studio perfected sound that Universal Records brings.

The Weeknd
Wanderlust (Pharrell Remix)

Hit-maker and Virgina-bred artist Pharrell Williams has been killing it this summer with a series of infectious hits. He’s already teamed up for some major summer anthems with Daft Punk s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” alongside T.I. So, it was only a matter of time before he took the time to collaborate with one of Toronto’s rising stars, The Weeknd. Getting ready for his upcoming debut, the two crooners drop a remix to “Wanderlust.” Adding some smooth vocals over a re-worked groovy beat, the pair were able to make a solid R&B/pop duet. This track will be featured as a bonus listen on The Weeknd’s Kiss Land, dropping September 10th. [R&B/Chill] Rich Hil – Nomads ft The Weeknd

The apple seems to fall from the tree. As the son of the well-known designer Tommy Hilfiger, Rich Hil drops some new tunes for the interwebs this week. Mixing dark tunes with his raspy voice, this singer croons over an atmospheric beat complete with snares and hi-hats on the single “Nomads”. Almost a drug-induced feel and vibe, it is only right that he recruits the talents of the drug-and-sex oriented Canadian singer The Weeknd to emphasize the “tortured-soul” vibe of Hillfiger’s rebelious son’s painful lyircs. A theme that can be heard throughout his entire debut album SYLDD. As a huge gift to the fans and a middle-finger to his record label, Hil released his debut album for free here, via Noisey.

[NEW] The Weeknd – Valerie

The Weeknd is back today with yet another brand new bonus track from Trilogy, coming courtesy of BBC Radio 1. Like the previous release, this one takes us on a complex, emotional tour through The Weeknd’s conscience. On “Valerie,” Abel struggles with the emotional toil associated with being unfaithful. Although the act itself seems familiar to him, the guilt involved is foreign, and he details the effect these new feelings coursing through his mind have on his actions. To make matters worse, both parties know the other’s lying about the illicit relationship or the knowledge of its existence, yet they continue to push on in their relationship despite the presence of the elephant in the room. It’s definitely a telling tale that’s been done countless times in music, but for some reason everything seems fresh once The Weeknd laces the track with his vocal prowess.

The Weeknd continues to grow and mature as an artist, and if you’d like to hear more where this came from, make sure to pick up Trilogy when it drops next week on November 13th.

[R&B] The Weeknd – Twenty Eight

This newest track from The Weekend might be one of his most heartfelt and emotional outings to date. The song itself is about a woman who initially is nothing more than a one night stand, but soon transforms into a thorn in Abel’s side once she realizes his identity. He then delves into the issues this causes as she becomes part groupie and part girlfriend, while The Weeknd struggles to find a true solution. This latest effort also allows The Weeknd to stretch his vocal range, as he torches through the track with intensely raw emotion. If you’ve been steadily awaiting the release of Trilogy, take solace in the fact that it is now only a week away.
