Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 20]

Hello ninjas, and welcome to Sunday Night Soul Volume 20. We embarked on this journey exactly 5 months ago with the goal of finding only the best tunes the internet had to offer. What started off as a fairly modest effort, has now grown substantially to the monstrosity you see here (and we mean “monstrosity” in the most loving way possible). We’re proud to see how the field has expanded to include various different soundscapes, increasingly pushing the genre to new limits. It’s an exciting time for R&B music, and we’re pleased to be to sitting right here in the front row, watching it evolve right before our eyes.Of course, you can hear that growth for yourself below.

This week’s collection includes multiple doubles. By doubles we mean you’ll be seeing more than a few names repeated multiple times throughout. Whether it’s through remixes or features, what it indicates is that plenty of your favorites were incredibly busy this week. Standouts come by way of Zuper, Dpat & Atu, SZA, White Lights, Bipolar Sunshine, Gallant, Z.Woods, Mila J, Rush Davis, Muzi, Ta-Ku, Fei-Fei, subdaio, elkco, Lido, ForteBowieTOKiMONSTAFiggy and Dolphin Tears. That might seem like a substantially long list already, but that’s just scratching the surface of what tonight’s pallet has to offer.

[ULTRA 2014 Schedule Recommendation] TMN’s Must See Guide to Ultra (Miami 3/28 – 3/30)

1239423_10152109764737739_1828179057_n

Ahh. The time is finally here. All winter long we’ve been angrily looking at the calendar, not-so-patiently awaiting the start of festival season here in the states. To kick things off in 2014, we’re obviously overwhelmingly excited for what Ultra 2014 is bringing to the table.

As you would guess, this year’s line up is stacked, as usual. There’s a veritable pantheon of EDM legends, coupled with some amazing up and coming artists as well. We traditionally like to do a full stream of everyone that’s going to be there, but this year we’re going to change it up. Instead of giving you a tiny sample of each artist who’s playing, we’re going to give you our recommendations, day by day.

Scheduling is going to be tricky, so make sure you set out a proper game plan. It might be hard to stick to after a few beverages, but take it from us – don’t miss out on seeing your favorite artist, or any of these suggestions below:

Friday March 28th

Chainsmokers – Stage 7

Picked by Bryn Carter & Clayton Warwick

TMN Staff Comment: Two handsome devils reigning from New York who can make ANY song the ultimate remix. Make sure to check out these two who will keep your feet moving and your mind spinning with their intense indie/electronic melodies.

’The Wanted – We Own The Night(The Chainsmokers Remix)’
’The Chainsmokers vs. Tove Lo – Habits’
’#SELFIE’

M.I.A. – Live Stage

Picked by Eric Gossett

mia300-790e9b19a08dbe8b6be20c05655262c4260e563f-s6-c30
TMN Staff Comment: The ever-controversial M.I.A. is definitely a “don’t miss” performance at this year’s Ultra Music Festival. The singer just released her critically-acclaimed album Matangi last year and is currently being sued by the NFL for $15 million for her performance at the Super Bowl. So if that was what they (couldn’t) show at the Super Bowl, I can only imagine how wild her uncensored stage show must be.

’BRING THE NOIZE’
’M.I.A. – Bad Girls’
’27’

Friday March 28th

12TH Planet – UMF Radio Stage

Picked by Clayton Warwick

12thplanet

TMN Staff Comment: Last year, I had the pleasure of introducing someone to trap, and did so by watching 12th Planet’s set on Sunday afternoon. This well respected, LA based producer will be throwing down a massive set full of filthy beats. If you want to get down and dirty, don’t miss this set.

’Pretty Lights
Go Down Sunshine (12th Planet Remix)’
’Smoked Out’
’12th Planet & Protohype
“Paper” on @smogrecords’

Friday March 28th

Kill The Noise – UMF Radio Stage

Picked by Michael Serratore

Kill-The-Noise-Kill-Kill-Kill-EP

TMN Staff Comment: There are plenty of players in the world of filthy bass, but no one does it quite like KTN. There’s an undeniable energy in everything he does, and that will only be taken to the next level amongst a crowd of frenzied fans

’Thumbs Up (For Rock N’ Roll) with Feed Me’
’DUCKSAUCE – NRG (Skrillex, Kill The Noise, Milo & Otis RMX)’
’Kill The Noise & Dillion Francis – Dill The Noise’

Friday March 28th

Chance the Rapper – Live Stage

Picked by Baseer Ahmad and Clayton Warwick

Chance-the-Rapper

TMN Staff Comment: You say you’re going to Ultra to only listen to beats? Don’t limit yourself. A break in the bass will be welcomed, and who better to give you said break than Chi-Town native, Chance the Rapper?

’Childish Gambino: They Dont Like Me (ft. Chance the Rapper)’
’Lil Wayne – You Song Ft Chance The Rapper (Dedication 5)’
’Chance The Rapper – Brain Cells Live (5day)’

Friday March 28th

The Glitch Mob – Worldwide Stage

Picked by Rachel Haroldson

Glitch-Mob-Love-Death-Immortality

TMN Staff Comment: This is a no brainer. Glitch Mob absolutely throws down with live performances, from the insane stage set-ups to the energy of the group, you can just see that these guys have a passion for performing and love giving the audience an unforgettable show.

’Nalepa – Monday (The Glitch Mob Remix)’
’A Dream Within a Dream – DRINK THE SEA’
’The Glitch Mob – We Can Make The World Stop’

[NEW] M.I.A. – Come Walk With Me

M.I.A.
Come Walk With Me

After teasing us with a snippet and leaking a YouTube clip last year of some young kids dancing to the track, UK artist M.I.A. finally drops the full version of her latest single “Come Walk With Me”. Starting off with a slow melody, the track quickly picks up tempo to transition from a pop song to a ridiculously insane electro banger. The jarring track is equal parts grunge as it is infectious. Take a listen to the new tune from her upcoming Matangi full length, dropping soon.

[NEW] M.I.A. – Bring The Noize

BRING THE NOIZE

M.I.A. returns to the scene the only way she knows how, with a brash, blaring in-your-face new single, “Bring The Noize.” Paying tribute to the Public Enemy classic, Maya told Zane Lowe of BBC Radio 1 that the single is “coming out at a time where I think in America it’s kinda cool to hear something like this,” likely referencing the recent debacles involving the NSA and Edward Snowden. There’s no word on when M.I.A.’s fourth studio album, Matangi, will finally come out, but it’s pretty clear that she’s getting frustrated with the entire process right now, “It’s just one of those things where I’ve given up at this point. I was literally going to start putting out records from my bedroom. This was my last stab at it– I’m going to hand it in and wait for it to go out the way albums go out. If I didn’t get it out right now, I would’ve definitely exploded.” She also went on to mention that the album had been rejected for being “too positive,” whatever that means. Either way, we hope we get a chance to hear the album in its final form, through whichever delivery method she finally settles on.

MATANGI Mix for Kenzo

As fans patiently wait for M.I.A.‘s new album MATANAGI to drop this April, she teases them with a new mix. The track, which serves as a prequel to her upcoming effort, is a collaborative effort with fashion house Kenzo. Mixing some tribal sounds, Hindi chants, heavy drums, the Sri Lankan artist jumps on about 4 minutes into the track and switches up the beat  for a hip-hop mix coupled with a “thankful” rap. Although the track is 8-minutes long, it sounds like a perfect mash-up of multiple songs and rhythms that make for an infectious listen. Check out the dance track below.

[NEW] M.I.A. – Doobie

Taking the web this past week for the nostalgic #Throwback Thursdays, mega-producer Danja leaked a new track from M.I.A. via Youtube titled “Doobie”. The previously unreleased track, recorded during “Bad Girls”, is a fast-paced synth heavy dance track dedicated to that little plant known for placing people on cloud 9. It is not clear whether this track will be on M.I.A’s upcoming project Matangi, whose release was pushed back for being “too positive”, but this short and infectious track is definitely a banger. Be sure to check it out below.

[Fresh] M.I.A. – Attention

After her controversial performance at last year’s superbowl, M.I.A. has been laying low and relatively quiet with new music. Thanks to her loyal  fans and high demand, the rebellious English artist blessed fans with a new track titled “AtTENTion”. Filled with drums, synths and reggae rips, this computerized leak has an experimental funky sound that M.I.A. is known for. Coupled with her sporadic rhyming, she demands your attention by rhyming almost every line with “-Tent”.  Although it is not clear whether or not this will be on her upcoming effort Matanagi, due next year, be sure to check out the free track below.
