Lil Debbie Talks New Album, The State Of Hip-hop & Rising Talent [TMN Interview]

Respect is earned, it’s not simply given out to anybody. Unfortunately for women, that respect is even tougher to come by in the creative world especially, but one OG boss who has been doing her own thing for years – gaining mad respect and praise from all crowds – is Lil Debbie. The rapper, model, weed connoisseur and fashion designer isn’t someone who will be going away anytime soon.

Lil Debbie has set up a foundation that is going to last. She’s come from music and that has laid the groundwork for a successful multi-faceted career. Moves will always be made, but her latest move hearkens back to the music by means of a brand new album, OG In My System. Complete with eleven tracks, including her lead single “Summer,” this LP sees Debbie taking her sound to new territories.

Stagnant isn’t a word in Lil Debbie’s vocabulary. Over the years she’s released an incredible amount of songs, each time out taking steps to offer fans something a little different. The Bay Area beast is a legend in her own right, but the tale isn’t over. We’re sure to have more music, as you’ll find out below. Lil Debbie recently stopped by the dojo for an interview, answering questions about her new album, where hip-hop is currently and what artists she has her eyes on.

TMN: Let’s start with a totally unfair question, which song is your favorite on the OG In My System?

LD: “I Get It” has to be one of my top 3.

TMN: Can you give us a rundown of what it was like putting together this LP?

LD: It was interesting, I’m always evolving, developing and progressing so it’s interesting to watch my inner self grow – going through sadness and bossyness.

TMN: What makes this album different from your previous work?

LD: Well for one I’m experimenting with Auto-tune, also I’m playing around with melodies and flow switch up. Definitely trying out new things and playing around while I still can.

TMN: Why did you choose to release the single “Summer” first? How much fun was it shooting the music video?

“Summer” represents such a lighter time of my life, I felt like it was necessary to drop that first. The video was a lot of fun, I honestly had no clue I was even going to shoot a video. Me and my girls just decided one day to play around with equipment we brought out to the islands. Most of it is just random footage of us wandering around by ourselves getting stoned and lost.

TMN: Being a stoner myself, I have to wonder… approximately how much weed went into the making of this album?

LD: POUNDS.

TMN: You’ve released an LP or mixtape every year over the past few years, looking to keep that going in the future?

LD: Yea, you know me, I’m not a quitter.

TMN: You recently did a project with the Barong Family. Looking to work with dance music producers more often?

LD: Yes, I love dance music and I love creating with all types of producers. I was sooo blessed to be able to be apart of a Barong Family project!

TMN: As someone who doesn’t stick to just music, what other ventures do you currently have going on right now?

As of right now I am working on my marijuana brand cakes, which is an edible line but I also do carry live resin and a cakes marijuana strain. I’m also working on other things for my fans but as of right now this is one of my main focuses.

TMN: Is there something you have yet to get your hands in that you would like to?

LD: Yea some Rose Dom Perignon! LOL.

TMN: Style is something you own and there’s no better, more permanent way to express style than with tattoos. What has been your latest addition and what’s next?

LD: I recently got legs in the air with panties sliding down the legs and two nails that are just filling in some space on my arm in between two other tattoos. I never know what I’m going to get tatted I just get things last minute.

TMN: Where do you think the rap game is at currently and where do you see it going?

LD: The rap game is in a dope dope dope dooopppeeee space as of right now. There’s a lot of freedom for artists to express themselves and a lot of outlets. All blessings!

TMN: Can you tell us some up and coming talent in the Bay Area that everyone should know?

Everyone should check out my girl that is super clean, her name is Aliky, check out her Instagram which has all her music info @Aliikyw. Also another girl that is dope that can also sing is Natty Kay, her Instagram info is @NattyKay7.

OG In My System was released today and is currently available on iTunes and Spotify.

[Indie/Hip-Hop] Ash Riser – Ghosts LP

If there was only one project you could listen to all week, make it Ghosts by Ash Riser. For one, it’s packed with seventeen tracks, so you’re sure to get your fill, along with some variety. Secondly, it’s an extraordinary project that only Ash has the ability to put together.

As you might guess from an album called Ghosts, the mood overall is quite haunting and dark. Ash has already established himself as a unique creator, but with this LP he cements an undeniable pillar deep in the ground and high in the air for everyone to see that he is a must know artist. He kicks up some hip-hop, but his indie sound doesn’t hold him to any one genre throughout the project. Ghosts isn’t something that should really be analyzed as it speaks for itself in a way that is unrivaled. If you’d like a copy, hit up the digital service of your choice to get it.

[Electronic] Statik Link – Carpe Momentum LP

Statik Link teased his album with a music video for the single “We Came To Party” that we previously covered. You knew Carpe Momentum was coming, but now it is here in full.

As the case a lot of the time with future funk projects, the length of collaborators is lengthy. A lot of love and heart goes into these projects, as well as live instruments and vocal performances. So is the case for Carpe Momentum which is packed with nine songs total. Statik keeps it funky throughout, but broadens his range hitting genres like house, twerk and beyond. It’s a thorough project, with plenty of hits that can’t be missed. If you want to support the project, you can do so via iTunes.

Kraak & Smaak Talk Albums, Live Sets & Boogie Angst In The Dojo [TMN Interview]

The Netherlands is a hub for talent, especially if you were focusing on electronic music. Most people will immediately think of Hardwell, Afrojack, and Martin Garrix, but there are three men who have been trailblazing dance music in a big way for over 10 years now. They are Kraak & Smaak.

Kraak & Smaak is comprised of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug. Together they produce riveting dance music that is anything but average. In fact, even if you don’t call yourself a lover of electronic music, leave it to these guys to take your heart. They are more than dance music producers. They are artistic visionaries. Don’t believe us? Run through the five albums they have done together, including their latest, Juicy Fruit, and tell us otherwise.

Furthermore, they’ve got a live show that will blow any DJ set out of the water (even their own), and they run the exemplary imprint Boogie Angst. A lot of artists talk about paving new trails and creating new experiences, but Kraak & Smaak walk the walk. They’ve done it for years. Now, they’ve entered the dojo to talk a bit about their past together, as well as their latest album and what is in store.

TMN: Can you tell us a little about “Juicy Fruit,” your latest album?

Well, it’s our 5th and feels like a bit of a return from 2005’s Boogie Angst. It’s open, organic, warm and above all funky in the traditional sense of the word, so in that sense different from Chrome Waves, which was far more electronic and clubby. There is a big difference though between then and now: on our first album it was mostly sample based, including the vocals and songs that were on there. Since then we have mastered the art of using more and more live instrumentation and getting vocalists to work with us. I think we can be proud of ourselves again to have found such great songwriters and vocalists such as Eric Biddines, Cleopold, Meeka Kates, Mayer Hawthorne, ALXNDR London and Parcels, but also our own live band singers Ivar Vermeulen and Berenice van Leer.

TMN: How did you go about choosing remixers for next the single ‘Alone With You’?

We always start out with a longlist of ideas based on current favorites and a bunch of names that have been circulating for a longer time. From thereon we look if certain remixers could be a good match and pick out the best ones. Then we ask them and just hope a) they don’t hate our music b) they are available and c) they don’t cost too much 🙂

TMN: What inspired the artwork behind the LP?

With the album title Juicy Fruit became definitive, our first ideas were inspired by the paintings of Henry Rousseau and more in general Brazilian album artwork. I mean, with that title and the music it was only logical to have something colorful, fresh, organic, etc as the cover. Again we asked Jimmy Turrell, who also did the Electric Hustle album artwork, to come up with a few ideas. And among those, the final one immediately stood out: this big explosion of colorful objects, bulls eye!

TMN: Talk us through the live aspect of Kraak & Smaak and how it has evolved over the years?

Of course we started out Djing – which we already did for a longer time, but now under the K&S banner. But when the first album was up for release our then agent convinced us to start a separate live act because it made the music – which was essentially dancefloor based – more interesting to a bigger public. So we assembled a live band for the album presentation and it was an immediate hit: at the time there were only a few bands that performed that type of music in a similar manner, and certainly not in the Netherlands. So from thereon it really got bigger and bigger and alongside our dj sets we were able to develop the band further in terms of adding further live instrumentation, sound, lighting, etc. Our current band is more or less the third live incarnation of K&S but for us also the best ever. Above all it’s cool and logical for us to be able to both live shows and dj sets. It’s a best of both worlds but at the same time they are both quality.

TMN: You’ve been together for over a decade, how have you made it work between the three of you, and how have you maintained staying relevant?

I guess – especially with three people – it’s all about giving each other space and trust each other in ideas, expertise, etc. Ego for example has never been such an issue that it threatened the K&S project. I guess we were – and still are – very aware of what we have and are still accomplishing. Not many dance acts can say the same. And I think the relevancy is still there in the sense that we are still coming up with new and original material, against the grain of time perhaps.

You’ve survived several albums together, which is each of your favorite?

Oh dear… They’re all really good to us, just different! But If we all really look in the mirror I am sure we will all say the first one, Boogie Angst. Above all because it was our first, and with first albums it feels like it’s sort of the apex of everything you have done and thought of before. It’s the album you just had to make. After that it’s a whole different ball game – you just feel happy if you can develop your sound further and keep people interested – which I think we did.

TMN: You now also have your own label, Boogie Angst. What drove the decision to set this up and what has been the biggest challenge in creating a label?

We just came across some very good unreleased music and artists once in a while, and we thought: why not try and releasing it ourselves? It perfectly made sense when you came to think of it. And it’s definitely nice to put your own experiences and know how into new and young artists, real cool. Plus there is definitely still a need for labels to get new artists and music through. For most releases putting it just on Soundcloud and sit back is not enough. An important challenge for the time being though, is that it takes a lot of investing before you get a return. In that sense, as we are a relatively new label, we still have a long way to go.

TMN: What can fans expect for the rest of the year, and beginning of 2017?

Of course we will be rolling out the new album and its singles further this year and into 2017. Lots of DJing and playing live across the globe. Some upcoming remixes and DJ mixes going online. Also keep an eye out for new releases on our own Boogie Angst label and a remix album further down the 2017 road!

[Mutli-Genre] Vaski – Night Sessions LP

Vaski has been teasing his debut album for a while now. We’re happy to relay that Night Sessions is finally here as an independent release. Vaski took on this project nearly all by himself, only getting some help from artists Anna Yvette and Zippy Laske. The ten track project is largely made up of trappy beats with some dubstep jams, however the Los Angeles producer extends his creativity even beyond that for some unique records.

Vaski flexes his abilities while gaining new ground, as well as harkens back to some classic sounds that he initially built his career on. Tracks like “Everybody Knows” and “One Night Only” have the listener venturing down into some hood vibes, while “Ex Machina” and “Molecules” bring a heavier bass sound that’s more akin to the earlier music from this dynamic creator. With “Los Angeles” he brings the BPMs down for a production that is unlike anything else on the LP. With so many good tracks, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but if we had to toss out two, they’d be “Pacific” and “Spin It Back.” Check out the entire project and head over to iTunes if you’d like a copy.

’Everybody Knows’
’Los Angeles’
