Episode #98: Cosmic Amanda & DJ Chad on the Spaceship

Soundcloud || Spotify Playlist  || BFF.fm Archive & Tracklist

On the eve of our Space Disco / BFF.fm Benefit, we were joined by BFF.fm’s founder Cosmic Amanda and the legendary DJ Chad. But before we got into the disco sesh, I kicked off the show with some hazy, spacey cuts from MGMT, Vivian Fantasy, Nabihah Iqbal and Akasha System. Vindata‘s new mixtape was so good that I had to squeeze in a lil sampler (4 songs!) of its soultronic magic. Before sharing some phenomenal disco cuts, Amanda and I chopped it up about BFF history, Victorian submarines and our mutual love of disco. DJ Chad closed the show out with some wiggly space bumps. – Ash

[Electronic] Nick Hook – Relationships (Album)

Electronic music and hip-hop have always had a unique relationship. Despite the fact that they, in many ways, evolved from similar revolutionary production techniques, they don’t always find ideal synergy. Through out his budding career, NY-based producer Nick Hook has continually blurred lines between the two with a taste that proves an understanding of music outside of genre constraints. That versatility is a direct product of his diverse background in the industry starting as a multi-genre guitarist and evolving into a producer who’s worked with Young Thug, Run the Jewels, DJ Rashad, Hudson Mohawke and Baauer among others (and that’s leaving out the star-studded list of collaborators in the rock world.)

Relationships, his debut album, serves as a triumphant crescendo on his ascension bringing in too many collaborators to list in a way that feels far more natural than similarly bold projects. Perhaps the secret falls in the album name–Hook seems to have a genuine understanding of the artists he’s working with: allowing their input without ever losing site of cohesion.

The album carries a steadily wavy, experimental vibe through out from the off-kilter, Makonnen-featuring ballad “All Alone” to Awful Records posse cut “Pro-Choice,” a typically absurd outing for the ATLiens. At the same time, Hook’s not afraid to turn things up with the heavy-hitting Grime cut “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” posthumously DJ Rashad-assisted “+3,” east coast cypher “Live While I’m Livin,” and “Head,” perhaps the hardest-hitting song thanks to 21Savage. All that variation is tied together by the project’s brief, but gorgeous, instrumental moments such as “Forever” and “Evolisontherise,” which features Hudson Mohawke.

Relationships, which is out now on Fool’s Gold Records, is an ambitious outing that could’ve gone wrong had it not been put together so thoughtfully. Rather, it plays out as a sonic adventure with something for everyone but also the capacity to open minds by placing songs in the right context. Give the whole project a listen below and grab a copy here if you like what you hear.

Music Ninja Radio is a weekly podcast broadcast live on San Francisco’s BFF.fm — Best Frequencies Forever. You can tune in here every Friday from 4-6PM PT / 7-9ET.

Last Friday’s show marks the one year anniversary since we took our talents to the airwaves of BFF in San Francisco’s best kept secret(alley). From deep in the Mission District, through the port of a pirate ship, we’ve been bringing the best of the best to your ears – Best Frequencies Forever wasn’t voted ‘Best Radio Station‘ in the Bay Area for nothing!

With that in mind, now seems as good a time as any to start providing our fellow Ninja readers with a weekly recap of our show, Music Ninja Radio aka Dojo by the Bay. Curating the best releases each week, themed shows coinciding with specific artist releases, and a fair amount of throwbacks sprinkled throughout, Music Ninja Radio has something for everyone.

Hudson Mohawke – Very First Breath (SteLouse Remix) [TMN Premiere]

Hudson Mohawke
Very First Breath ft. Irfane (StéLouse Remix)

It’s been a hot minute since SteLouse‘s last release. The wait is finally over, as the Denver-based producer remixes Hudson Mohawke‘s “Very First Breath”. Flipping Irfane‘s vocals and incorporating them into the signature SteLouse sound, the talented producer creates an incredibly catchy melody with a series of wobbly synths. The unique vocals will hit you right in the feels and take you on an emotion roller coaster as the crafty synthline takes over. It’s one of those tunes that will stick with you for a long time.

It’s no easy task taking on a Hudmo track, but SteLouse definitely nailed it and made it his own. Grab this as a free download, and make sure to stay tuned as we’re expecting some fresh original tunes coming real soon!

CHIMES RMX ft Pusha T, Future, Travi$ Scott, French Montana

When Hudson Mohawke first signed to G.O.O.D. Music, we hoped that lineups for his productions and remixes would feature the A-listers. His newest EP release “Chimes” was even featured on an Ad for Apple so it’s safe to say, he is finally blowing up. Now, we get the “Chimes (Remix)” with Future on the hook, as well as support from Pusha-T, French Montana and Travi$ Scott. Look out for more massive collabs from the Hud Mo/TNGHT camp, it has only just begun. Cheers.

[NEW] Dawn Golden – All I Want (Diplo Remix)

Dawn Golden
All I Want (Diplo Remix)

Few established producers have demonstrated as much versatility as Diplo, who has delved into and succeeded in nearly every genre. On his latest re-work, the eclectic Mad Decent founder puts a heavy twist on Dawn Golden’s airy, self-described #SadBanger, “All I Want.” The track still holds the hazy-pop stylings of the original until it slowly develops introducing some enormous, Hudson Mohawke-esque horns. The result is a unique dynamic that manages to relax and energize simultaneously.

Dawn Golden is the monicker for Dexter Tortoriello, of the duo Houses, and “All I Want” can be found on his debut solo project Still Houses, available now on iTunes. Happy Turnip Tuesdays, ninjas!

[Trap] TNGHT – Acrylics

TNGHT
ACRYLICS

It’s been way too long since we last heard anything new from trap duo TNGHT. Hudson Mohawke and Lunice clearly shared the same sentiments, dropping this monstrosity in preparation for their set at Coachella later this month. There’s plenty of adjectives that could be used to describe this track: filthy, smashing, mesmerizing, the list goes on. Just know that it’ll be in constant rotation from this day forward. Cop the single on iTunes, and prepare yourself for an epic 2013 from two of Kanye‘s favorite producers.
