[Hip-Hop] TastyTreat- Summer (Don’t Go) ft. Wasiu

TastyTreat
Summer (Don't Go) feat. Wasiu

Today we have the newest song from producers Tasty Treat and Montreal rapper Wasiu called “Summer (Don’t Go).” If the title doesn’t give it away, this song talks about the good things about Summer and how the majority of people don’t want the season to go.

Treat’s production gives off the Summer time feeling; it’s bouncy and it even has birds chirping at some points in the song to give it some natural tones. Wasiu’s rapping is a list of things that makes Summer the best time of the year when he raps, “This feel like BBQ parties, pools uncles who say it’s way hotter out in Haiti/ It tastes like sweat dripping drunk kisses smudged lip stick dumb water fights gone crazy.” This track is an essential for any future summer time parties/cookouts. If you want to add this song to your playlist check it out on TastyTreat’s SoundCloud or on itunes.

Lil Debbie Talks New Album, The State Of Hip-hop & Rising Talent [TMN Interview]

Respect is earned, it’s not simply given out to anybody. Unfortunately for women, that respect is even tougher to come by in the creative world especially, but one OG boss who has been doing her own thing for years – gaining mad respect and praise from all crowds – is Lil Debbie. The rapper, model, weed connoisseur and fashion designer isn’t someone who will be going away anytime soon.

Lil Debbie has set up a foundation that is going to last. She’s come from music and that has laid the groundwork for a successful multi-faceted career. Moves will always be made, but her latest move hearkens back to the music by means of a brand new album, OG In My System. Complete with eleven tracks, including her lead single “Summer,” this LP sees Debbie taking her sound to new territories.

Stagnant isn’t a word in Lil Debbie’s vocabulary. Over the years she’s released an incredible amount of songs, each time out taking steps to offer fans something a little different. The Bay Area beast is a legend in her own right, but the tale isn’t over. We’re sure to have more music, as you’ll find out below. Lil Debbie recently stopped by the dojo for an interview, answering questions about her new album, where hip-hop is currently and what artists she has her eyes on.

TMN: Let’s start with a totally unfair question, which song is your favorite on the OG In My System?

LD: “I Get It” has to be one of my top 3.

TMN: Can you give us a rundown of what it was like putting together this LP?

LD: It was interesting, I’m always evolving, developing and progressing so it’s interesting to watch my inner self grow – going through sadness and bossyness.

TMN: What makes this album different from your previous work?

LD: Well for one I’m experimenting with Auto-tune, also I’m playing around with melodies and flow switch up. Definitely trying out new things and playing around while I still can.

TMN: Why did you choose to release the single “Summer” first? How much fun was it shooting the music video?

“Summer” represents such a lighter time of my life, I felt like it was necessary to drop that first. The video was a lot of fun, I honestly had no clue I was even going to shoot a video. Me and my girls just decided one day to play around with equipment we brought out to the islands. Most of it is just random footage of us wandering around by ourselves getting stoned and lost.

TMN: Being a stoner myself, I have to wonder… approximately how much weed went into the making of this album?

LD: POUNDS.

TMN: You’ve released an LP or mixtape every year over the past few years, looking to keep that going in the future?

LD: Yea, you know me, I’m not a quitter.

TMN: You recently did a project with the Barong Family. Looking to work with dance music producers more often?

LD: Yes, I love dance music and I love creating with all types of producers. I was sooo blessed to be able to be apart of a Barong Family project!

TMN: As someone who doesn’t stick to just music, what other ventures do you currently have going on right now?

As of right now I am working on my marijuana brand cakes, which is an edible line but I also do carry live resin and a cakes marijuana strain. I’m also working on other things for my fans but as of right now this is one of my main focuses.

TMN: Is there something you have yet to get your hands in that you would like to?

LD: Yea some Rose Dom Perignon! LOL.

TMN: Style is something you own and there’s no better, more permanent way to express style than with tattoos. What has been your latest addition and what’s next?

LD: I recently got legs in the air with panties sliding down the legs and two nails that are just filling in some space on my arm in between two other tattoos. I never know what I’m going to get tatted I just get things last minute.

TMN: Where do you think the rap game is at currently and where do you see it going?

LD: The rap game is in a dope dope dope dooopppeeee space as of right now. There’s a lot of freedom for artists to express themselves and a lot of outlets. All blessings!

TMN: Can you tell us some up and coming talent in the Bay Area that everyone should know?

Everyone should check out my girl that is super clean, her name is Aliky, check out her Instagram which has all her music info @Aliikyw. Also another girl that is dope that can also sing is Natty Kay, her Instagram info is @NattyKay7.

OG In My System was released today and is currently available on iTunes and Spotify.

[Music Video] HUKO – Bind (feat. Cozy)

It’s rare that I find a a music video that truly catches my curiosity. However, HUKO recently released a peculiar visual project for their recent house hit in Europe, “Blind” ft. Cozy that promises to pull your interest. The video, directed by Greg Kozo features a man with an egg-shaped head roaming around a luxurious modern house filled with beautiful people. Panoramic shots, humorous scenes, riveting romance, and an unexpected ending make this video stand out from the rest. Standing in support of the track’s feel-good synths and catchy vocal hook, this piece does an excellent job of ushering in summer’s uplifting energy. Check out the video here and enjoy!

Aer – Whatever We Want (Video)

Aer
Whatever We Want

Since releasing their self-titled second album in January, Aer have been busy selling out shows and earning themselves spots at major music festivals, Outside Lands being the most recent announcement. Earlier this week, the Boston-bred, genre-fusing duo released some visuals for one of our favorite songs from the album, “Watever We Want,” and they come right in time for summer. The video takes David and Carter back in time with Adidas jumpsuits among other hilarious outfits as they trash a house with some ferocious looking dogs. The fun and goofy feel match the song’s positive energy making it perfect for a sunny Saturday afternoon, as always with Aer. Enjoy the video below and make sure to check our exclusive interview with Aer from a few months back to learn some more about these up ‘n comers.

[Mixtape] Vacationer – Ode 2 Summer Mixtape

Vacationer
Ode 2 Summer Mixtape

We’re midway through May, and summer seems to just keep on ramping up. Hopefully you’ve got a good handful of easy-going, sunny tracks already to start the season, but just in case, here’s an incredibly chill summer mixtape all the way from the East Coast from one of my personal favorites, Vacationer.

In case you aren’t familiar, Vacationer’s got a sun-drenched sound, self-described as Nu-Hula by frontman Kenny Vasoli, who is heavily influenced by tropical, exotic, and Polynesian recordings. Their sound is steeped in soul-warming, glimmering retro melody and dreamy, undulating vocals. This mixtape unfolds into a seamless showcase of their niche tropical sound.

There’s everything from world-inspired beats, to chilled-out hip-hop beats, and even classic soundtrack score vignettes. Vasoli’s dusty vocals wax and wane freely, sometimes met with a chorus of birds singing or gentle wind chimes. Like a reverse trail of breadcrumbs, sections of the group’s forthcoming sophomore album Relief is dotted throughout the mixtape, offering a glimpse of what’s to come.

So kick back a bit deeper in your hammock, bring on the heat waves and tall glasses of lemonade, and softly rattle your ice cubes against the glass to the beat. There seems to be a bit of summer for everyone in this coast-trawling, low-latitude-lovin’ mix.

Relief will be out on June 24, the follow up to the highly recommended LP Gone. You can pre-order it here.

[Indie] Coastal Cities – The Voyage

Coastal Cities is an up and coming band from the UK. They formed in 2009 when 3 of the members met in detention at school (talk about life giving you lemons and making lemonade); they recruited the other 2 soon after getting out of detention. Recently, they have released a new single called “The Voyage,” and it’s pure indie gold. It feels like Vampire Weekend had a baby with Foster The People, and that baby was born with British swag. “The Voyage” feels coastal—this is a song I would listen poolside, lakeside, seaside, westside, etc. “Relief” is more energetic and upbeat, but still keeps a coastal summer vibe. Their music is fresh; I can almost smell the salty coastal air while listening to this song. Better yet, it’s free! Grab it while you can, it’s worth at least a few plays this summer.

“The Voyage” and “Relief” are slated to be released 7/30 by Once Upon A Time Records, but “The Voyage” is up to download now.

[Indie/Dubstep] Ben Howard – Old Pine (Peking Duk Remix)

I already thought Ben Howard’s “Old Pine” was a beautiful song on its own. But Australian producer Peking Duk has transformed it into this magnificent-acoustic-happy-summer-dubstep masterpiece. I’m in absolute love right now with this track. The transitions from acoustic to synth, the cheery carefree whistling in the background, and Ben Howard’s signature mellow vocals enhance any sunny summer day for me in LA, and I’m sure that will apply globally as well. There’s a wonderful minimalistic quality to the track that makes it easy to appreciate for all listeners. I haven’t been following Peking Duk much, but after this one, I’m gonna be keeping a close eye on seeing what he’s offering to the music world.

Peking Duk’s remix of “Old Pine” is available for free download on his soundcloud. Go grab it!
