[Future/House] Gucci Mane – Pillz (Dr. Fresch Remix) [TMN Premiere]

Gucci Mane
Pillz (Dr. Fresch Remix)

In today’s climate of rapidly shape-shifting musical tastes coupled with sub-genres literally popping up overnight -specifically in dance music; we get a chance to witness some special artists knock the proverbial ball out of the park amongst a smorgasbord of evolving sounds. One such case study in aural diversification has remained L.A.’s Dr. Fresch. We’ve featured the envelope pushing chameleon before, from analog bass swingers to sultry future groovers and we’ve still yet to be disappointed. On the latest house-tinged remix from the Prep School Recordings boss, we find him taking on one of James Franco’s finest film co-stars (and a pretty decent rapper) Gucci Mane with a future revision of party-favor ode “Pillz”. The track gets pulled from Gucci’s club scene straight to the underground dance halls in which future jack (especially in the UK) has really begun to take hold, behind a sterling slick set of crisp, uncluttered legato synths, which pump an innovative feel to the standard four-four kick and swinging bassline that permeates so much of house music. We’re sure this one will be making the rounds around the interwebs as Dr. Fresch continues to solidify a presence as one of dance music’s fastest rising commodities, so get a leg up on all those trendy friends of yours and hear his remix of “Pillz” before anyone else thanks to an official ‘TMN Premiere; and snag the free download in exchange for a Facebook “like” here.

Drake
Best I Ever Had (Mason Flynt Remix)

Finding words to describe this has been tough. Here’s about the best way to explain it: Shoegaze Drake. Did you ever think you’d hear that phrase in your life? Well, Mason Flynt dropped a remix of Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” yesterday that sounds like something out straight out of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. It really catches the ear and makes for an unexpected great listen. He found a great balance between electronic elements and live instrumentation for what ended up being one of the most unique takes on Drake out there. This was a huge switch up in style for the primarily hip-hop influenced producer and remixer, but it really does work and is simply fun. Mason has had some spectacular tunes so far, and the Austin native is slowly beginning to make a name for himself with his solid collection of slick songs. Luckily enough, this remix a free download, so you DJs out there can inject a major dose of feels in your set and get emotional in the club real quick.

[Indie Dance] Atlas Bound – Talk (Jerry Folk Remix)

Atlas Bound
Talk (Jerry Folk Remix)

Next Wave Records knows how to pick artists. The original version of Atlas Bound‘s “Talk” is a stunning piece that perfectly represents the vibrant Australian electronic music scene, and fellow Next Wave producer, Jerry Folk, decided to give it his pristine, indie dance edge. With a simple piano intro followed by the duo’s dark and soothing vocals, this remix picks up the pace with traces of a lead that would make Daft Punk proud and a groove that accompanies a long drive as if they were made for each other. Something about this remix has a movie soundtrack quality to it, and honestly wouldn’t be out of place in some sort of science fiction atmosphere with its spacey elements and overall futuristic approach. Jerry Folk’s remix choices have all been exquisite and his tackling his label mates’ tune is yet another strong addition to his work. Enjoy the free download and don’t miss his first original, So Long, that was also released through Next Wave!

MS MR- Dark Doo Wop (Birthday Boy Version)

When it comes to remixes, there are only a few outcomes that can be reached: the remixes that take a beautiful original and in the simplest of words, destroy it, the ones that take a song and turn it into something even better than the original, and finally the ones that take a great track, and transform it into a divergent product of just as much greatness and quality. Most of you can probably agree that music such as MS MR’s is borderline flawless to say the very least, and to renovate any of their tracks is a pretty bold move.

After successfully astonishing all of us at TMN with his feel-good remix of Beyonce’s “Party,” Birthday Boy once again catches us off guard with his latest remix of MS MR’s “Dark Doo Wop.” Maintaining the fun, care-free sound we first heard in his “Party” remix, Birthday Boy mixes in some hints of funk while preserving the mysteriousness that betokens MS MR.

Though many of you may be die-hard fans of the original, may we strongly suggest you give this rendition a listen. It differs much, but is just as sweet to the ear.
