[House] option4 ft. Rose Quartz – Love Is Lonely

option4 ft. Rose Quartz
Love Is Lonely

Today we share with you a special sadboy anthem. For all the girls out there, don’t fret, as this one isn’t actually gender-specific. “Love Is Lonely” is an original single by option4 featuring Rose Quartz that is quite a deep, sad record. This Denver producer put together one extraordinary record that really touches you to your core. For anyone who has had a difficult relationship, you now have a song to express the feelings. The lyrics on this are compelling, and the production is magnificent. option4’s composition is fitting of the emotions of the lyrics, and are still catchy for being such an overcast record. There’s not a whole lot going on, but the counterplay between the sounds that are used is the work of calculated genius. “Love Is Lonely” is one of my personal favorite records of the year so far, it’s just that good. Give it a listen for yourself and download it for free if you’re digging this jam.

[Festival Review] Four Days In The Life of a Ninja at Movement Music Festival

movement

All photos copyright and courtesy of Matthew Reyer & Black Tuesday

Detroit’s fabled Movement Electronic Music Festival (formerly DEMF) was a visceral experience to say the least. From the sternum throttling bass kicks of the world’s loudest soundsystems designed exactly for all facets of dance music, the artificial crunch of plastic bottles and beer cans condensing beneath our feet in a warehouse basement at 5:00 a.m., to the general amounts of love from nearly every corner of the industry; we had an engaging and wonderful time. And with new owners Paxahau doing most everything in their ability to ensure a great Memorial Day Weekend, for the most part, the shows went off without a hitch.

Our team arrived late Friday night, and with still at least a couple of hours left in the evening to party before Movement’s official kick off the following afternoon, we headed to Detroit’s gritty warehouse district for an incredibly deep and storied lineup featuring both Moodyman and Theo Parrish taking us all to the Church of House through a vinyl only, eclectic set fusing neo-jazz, classic disco and plenty of contemporary house and techno without well… too much mixing really. It was certainly a throwback night in every sense, even an ode to Paradise Garage maestro Larry Levan style mixing. It was great to get back to our roots, stop being so damn critical, just enjoy a couple of dance music legends and set the stage for our weekend.

[Deep/Tech-House] option4 – You’re ILL

You're ILL

Denver based dance architect option4 has been on what we like to call around the music industry a “tear” as of late; with releases on iconic labels like Australian based Sweat it Out!, Diplo’s Mad Decent and an EP on one of house music’s most revered imprints, NYC’s Nurvous Records all within the last 12 months. So when we heard he was touching back down on the digital label he founded (and one we’ve been keeping up on), Night Supply, to release this latest slice of hooky underground house, “You’re ILL”, well we were just smitten. Featuring one of the best plucked samples we’ve had the pleasure of consuming this year, “You’re ILL”  riffs The Pack’s breakout hit “Vans” like many others have tried, but prevails mightily over them all.  That aurally addictive vocal of “Got My Vans On..” rides front and center over a versant melody most of the Dirtybird crew would covet, instilling equal parts classic jack and hip-hop infused soul. It really has been a pleasure witnessing option4’s star shine brighter with every passing release as we’ve been covering his ethos branded take of “More House than Tech, More Deep than Disco” since its inception. Stream option4’s “You’re ILL” above, and let’s bring it back to the club just like he did.

Indian Summer
Shiner ft. Ginger & The Ghost (option4 Remix)

After storming our pages last week with an utterly groovy remix of Sammy Bananas’ “Money Time” on Fool’s Gold Records, the underground street king of Denver Dance, option4, is back on yet another international tastemaking label, Australian based Sweat It Out, with a deep and glossy remix of Indian Summer’s “Shiner”. option4 rolls the cadence up a bit to suit what has quickly become a stellar signature blend of soul-fueled house and indie-dance while also slathering on a generous helping of punchy kicks and a swinging bassline to the original. With option4 creating such textured and danceable soundscapes with the refined ease and regularity of a twenty-year veteran while simultaneously dragging his fans into deeper waters; it’s no wonder why his layered remixes have been cropping up on some of dance music’s hottest imprints. We’ve been more than tickled with one of our favorite underground dance curators’ more emotive output as of late, and his “Shiner” remix is no different. Stream option4’s remix of Indian Summer’s “Shiner” above and equip that old sweat band (get it?) just in case.

Money Time feat. Antony & Cleopatra (Option4 Remix)

It’s always such a thrill for us at TMN when an artist we’ve been following from the ground up starts receiving the critical support for which we believe was due from the beginning. After an impressive 2013 and start to 2014, which included founding the digital Night Supply imprint, singles on the hallowed Nurvous Records, and absurdly viral remixes for Great Good Fine OK and Elizabeth Rose; Denver’s option4 makes a soulfully jacking debut on one of the biggest electronic tastemaking labels in existence, Fool’s Gold, by re-visioning Sammy Bananas’ “Money Time”. As with much of his back catalog, option4 paints a vibrant, deep and jacking U.K. house shine onto Bananas’ original; resulting in a tune armed with more than enough dark funky lacquer to incite a dancefloor storm. This one’s coming out as part of Sammy Bananas’ Money Time EP package, which dropped today through iTunes. Snag a copy here, and since you’ve made it this far, get your boogie onto option4’s remix above.

[House] Panama Wedding – All Of The People (option4 Remix)

Panama Wedding
All Of The People (option4 Remix)

Oh option4. Will there ever be a tune released from your arsenal with which we are not thoroughly in love with? Probably not, but that’s more than okay with your trusty TMN staff. After riding an immense wave of hype since we first featured the Denver based beatsmith over a year ago, option4’s diverse brand of “more house than tech, more deep than disco” dance music finds itself in the midst of its most mature and accessible stretch yet. His latest retooling of Panama Wedding’s “All Of The People” is nothing short of breathtaking either. Fusing a kick drum that is somehow as expansive and wide as it is punchy, those signature option4 vocal chops and a beautifully layed synth/piano line; option4’s production prowess seems to evolve with every passing release while maintaining the musical integrity with which we fell in love with in the first place. The real treat on this one though is the way in which Peter Kirk’s melancholy but pop-fueled vocals mesh their way into such bouncy and groove laden instrumentation. We even dare you to try and stifle the natural head-bob and hip-wiggle which seems to come attached to option4’s entire catalog. You won’t be able to. As an even better bonus, you can snag a free digital copy of option4’s remix from Panama Wedding’s Soundcloud here. Hop to it Ninjas.
