[Event Review] TMN Gets Transformational at Symbiosis Gathering

dsc06214

When we finally drove over the Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur, we were only riding on a couple of hours of sleep. My business partner and I were already sixteen hours in for the long trek from the Arizona desert to Northern California’s lush Symbiosis Festival. When we finally made it to the gate a few hours later I found myself surrounded by waves of exuberantly dressed people of all shapes and sizes; I couldn’t help but feel like an outsider looking in.

This was my first transformational festival, but definitely not my first transformational experience. Fifteen months earlier I was living and teaching my way through Asia. I’ve meditated with Tibetan monks in Dhramshala, India and trekked through the Himalayas in Nepal. I mean, what could Symbiosis really offer me that was new I found myself wondering.

Yet, when I finally broke through the line and got my wristband, I began to notice; it was like driving into a dream. Not just one dream, but a patchwork of other people’s dreams.

[Resident Artist of the Month October] Seven Lions

It was early in 2012 when we were introduced to the now ubiquitous dubstep Producer/DJ Seven Lions. He has been capable of not only contributing to the evolution of dubstep, but mastering the interlacing of soothing extended vocals and melodies. Early on, as dubstep hit America, many up and coming producers were primarily going for sonic aggression, while another sub-section of electronic artists, including Seven Lions, prioritized on well-crafted harmonies above all else. Fast forward 4 years and it is still true today. A Seven Lions track can caress you into a soothing mental trance and equality shake you to the core, all the while providing a fresh take on the genre. This obviously brings us to his latest EP Creation. The collection of tracks are much rooted in organic elements than his previous work, providing a new marriage between the acoustic and the electronic worlds. Following a new approach to producing, Seven Lions explains,

This time, songwriting really took place on guitar. There are more acoustic elements in the songs, and that ties it together. I wanted to get a little more experimental. I didn’t worry if something was going to be a big banger on the dancefloor or not. I just made what felt right at the time.

And he absolutely nails it.

This, along with many other reasons is exactly why we are extremely humbled to introduce our next Artist of the Month of October. There are many artists we admire, but not everyone has stayed as consistent about evolving their style as we have seen from Seven Lions. During the following weeks we will bring you more insight into his world, exclusive new tracks and a few surprises in between.

In the meantime, we highly encourage picking up tickets to one of his upcoming shows. Aside from what you’ll witness in the video below, you’ll also be helping support the fight against cancer through the tour’s charitable partner, Fuck Cancer.

[Electronic] SHIVV – 3 Seconds

SHIVV
3 SECONDS

A name you probably don’t have on your mental list of producers is SHIVV. However, you will in a moment. We previously covered a single of his, but today we have a brand new one called “3 Seconds” that comes from his upcoming EP, due out in October.

“3 Seconds” is a song that will give every gamer nostalgia. It’s sounds are certainly influenced by the gaming community, paying homage to the classic tones that many of us heard growing up. SHIVV doesn’t keep it entirely old-school though, as he brings those sounds into the now with a bit of a grittier edge. His melodies are both strong and catchy. They’re augmented by crisp basses that give the song a sort of hard-rock edge to it. “3 Seconds” is the perfect combination of several things together in one. It’s also available as a direct download on SHIVV’s Soundcloud account. Hit it up, follow him, and enjoy!
