[Dubstep] Oolacile – Expansion EP

Let’s get one thing straight. Dubstep isn’t dead, and it never died. It may not be as hype as it once was, but that all can change very quickly. Currently, it’s making somewhat of a comeback, thanks to some veterans as well as some newer artists like Oolacile. This talented bass-head recently came out with his Expansion EP on SMOG Records, and I’m here to tell you, it’s heavy. Like, REALLY heavy.

Althought Oolacile is the mastermind behind the project, the Expansion EP has its features including label head 12th Planet, Jumanji, MurDa, Savory and Boogie T. From start to finish, this EP is jam-packed to the brim with as much low frequency energy as you can handle. Oolacile moves between classic dub, riddim and the newer fashions of the genre with ease, yet he always has his own flavor on it. I’m not surprised in the slightest that SMOG picked this one up, and that its lead man wanted to collaborate with the up and comer. His focus on sound design and rhythm is something that really shines in this project, and will continue to do so as his career progresses. Take note, Oolacile is here to stay. Grab Expansion now!

[Moombahcore] Goja – The Ballad

Goja
The Ballad

Awwwww, moombahcore; it’s been a while since I’ve whipped that term out. Thanks to Goja and their single “The Ballad” it was possible. Released on WOLV Records, “The Ballad” is a bass booming midtempo record that features the vocalist Chantelle Paige.

Goja has quickly become a go-to act in the bass music scene. Their past few releases with WOLV Records have been absolutely killer, and they have even more dope tracks beyond that. With “The Ballad” we get a tantalizing original that first lures you in subtly, then drives some heavy low frequencies into your ears and body. The groovy rhythms in the bassline are not only strong, but they are catchy. With school just starting for many of you, “The Ballad” is what is going to be popping into your head when you are spacing out in class. Then once you’re done, you’ll be playing it in your spare time, especially if you are partying during leisure hours. Stream “The Ballad” today, and if you want a copy, several digital stores can oblige.

[Electronic] Camino Cabal Debuts Self-Titled EP

When artists take their first step forward with a new project, it’s both nerve-racking and exciting. The same goes for us when we see someone launching a project. However, once we heard what Camino Cabal had to offer with his debut EP, we only felt excitement for what’s to come.

After listening through the Camino Cabal EP, it should come as no surprise that the man behind this has already worked with the likes of Lindsey Stirling and Afrojack. Camino’s style is a fresh mixture of acoustic meets electronic. It’s hard for some to pull it off, but he does it without a hitch; creating smooth records that sway back and forth between a poppy singer/songwriter style and heavy bass. This motif is ridden through each of the three singles. Not only will you be headbanging, and dancing your ass off, but you will be singing along to the memorable lyrics that have a tinge of an old-school feel to them. All three singles are worth the listen, but if we had to pick a favorite, we’d run with “Black Sugar Sky.” It’s just too good. Check them all out and get ready for the official EP release next week on the 16th!

[Psych Rock] Jagwar Ma – OB1

Jagwar Ma
O B 1

I was first introduced to Jagwar Ma via BIRP’s May 2013 release. In “Man I Need”, I found a 9-minute long primer to what would soon become a favorite genre of music. The influences of indie rock, glitz-pop, and psychadelia came together to form a symbiotic masterpiece with each piece complimenting the others. While Jagwar Ma has been touring regularly, fans have not been exposed to new material since the debut of Howlin’ in 2013. This week, the first single from the soon-to-be released album Every Now and Then, “OB1” has hit the airwaves.

Opening with a glitzy, reverb heavy loop set under Gabriel Winterfield’s vocals, the track wastes no time to root itself in the same psychedelic framework that made the band so popular in 2013 – and propelled Lonerism to universal acclaim in 2012. “OB1” plays out nicely over the course of a lengthy five and a half minutes, giving an ode to previous works like “Uncertainty” and “The Throw” which take equally as long to build up.

As the song unfolds, a subbed out bass line and a 90s-rock guitar riff carry the bridge and the hook respectively. Overall, “OB1” is a return to form for Jagwar Ma and gives fans a hopeful glimpse into what is in store from them in the second half of 2016. In addition to dropping a new album, fans can catch what is – in my personal opinion – one of the best live performances that exists all over the globe this summer and fall. Jagwar Ma’s website can be found here and a few of their tour dates are listed below the music video.

Bass music and charity are two of our favorite things. Recently they came together to benefit Youth On Record, an organization dedicated to guiding at-risk youth in Denver through leadership and musical pathways. Who brought these two together you might ask? That would be the black. collective with the first volume of their black. compilation.

Thanks to Cadence & Cause, the black. collective’s charitable desires came to life. Before the charity, the music had to be made.
