Noble Oak – Past Life [TMN ALBUM PREMIERE]

Whether you’re getting ready to enjoy a warm, sunny, spring night on your back porch, or you’re staring out at a rain-soaked landscape, enjoying a glass of your favorite whiskey, Noble Oak’s Past Life will most assuredly be the perfect accompaniment to your Friday night wind-down.

If you’re not quite familiar with this self-proclaimed “epiphany pop” artist, there’s no time like the present. This crafty Torontonian has been slinging up artfully composed and downright dreamy tunes for the past four years. With a collection of 25+ tracks, he’s amassed hundreds of thousands of streams and garnered support from some of the most notable tastemakers both online and off.

Past Life is a collection of snapshots from the last few years before leaving my hometown, with unreleased material ranging from 1 to 3 years in age. It predominantly narrates the person I used to be, with references and flavours of my old habits and shortcomings.

Today, we’re bringing you a first look and listen to his beautifully cohesive Past Life, which casually flirts back and forth with stunning ambient, downtempo soundscapes and building, ethereal pop tunes. Tracks like “The Spirit,” “Oceanworld,” and “Perfect Sky” will have you melting into that comfy chair of yours, providing the perfect environment to delve into that book you’ve been meaning to finish. Conversely, you’ll find a perfect balance of engaging vocals and fluttering synths in “Moonlight,” “No Air,” and “Walk on Me,” all of which are worthy for a rhythmic foot tap, and an ear-to-ear grin as you kick off the start to your weekend.

[House] Eric Sharp – A Little More (ft. Spencer Ludwig & Shandra Dixon)

Eric Sharp
A Little More ft. Spencer Ludwig & Shandra Dixon

Here’s your tune of the day. “A Little More” is a combination of creative genius and a perfect display of genre-bending production. LA-based producer Eric Sharp envisioned a house tune that has the ability to stand out among the pack. He was inspired by the current electronic dance scene and decided to combine various musical elements to the making of this track.

The tune features eloquent trumpet work by Capital Cities trumpeter Spencer Ludwig, and gospel-style vocals by Shandra Dixon. The deep bassline gives the impression of a deep house track, but the trumpet comes as a surprise and provides us with melodic maneuvers. This unique fusion will definitely put you in a mood to dance your pants off.

Make sure to grab a free download if you dig the track. It’s always refreshing to see multiple musicians collaborating together on tracks that defy genres.

[Future Bass] Andrew Luce & Graves – Up To You (feat. Chelsea Cutler)

Up To You (feat. Chelsea Cutler) [Daruma]

Very few “Soundcloud producers” out there can switch up their style and create hit tracks in a heartbeat, and Andrew Luce can do just that. He’s also stepped out of the Soundcloud circle and recently made a name for himself after launching Daruma label. How many other 18-year-olds are able to accomplish what Andrew has done?

Collaborating with his labelmate Graves and singer Chelsea Cutler, Andrew Luce takes on a future bass tune that encompasses some catchy vocals and a melody-driven drop. To our surprise, “Up To You” is a complete 180 turn from what we usually hear, and it’s definitely a breath of fresh air. With so many tricks up his sleeves, Andrew Luce is set to take over the dance scene in the near future.

Humboldt – From Above [TMN MUSIC VIDEO PREMIERE]

From Above

Grief. Regret. Dispair. Obsession. It’s safe to say that we’ve all experienced the wave of emotions that comes with a break-up. It’s one of the most powerful events we go through as human beings, bringing uncontrollable surges, followed up devastating lulls for weeks, months, and sometimes even years.

Humboldt, a Berlin-based songwriter, DJ, has certainly has tugged on our heartstrings today, showcasing a beautifully painful scene between two lovers. Interestingly enough, though, it’s gorgeously juxtaposed with his calming, rhythmic, and ethereal track “From Above.” The counter-balance between the powerful message, both through the visuals and lyrics, and his calculated arrangement of airy percussion, alluring piano melody, and engaging vocal hums create quite the experience, start-to-finish.

This up and coming artist gained a strong following through stellar remixes of both Alt-J and Still Parade, but now has his sites set on an original body of work, Mamihlapinatapai. Look for its release on Ove Records, Humboldt’s very own imprint, later this spring.

The Chill Dojo #178

178 editions down and we’re still finding tracks that manage to amaze us with their genre-breaking qualities. This time it’s Sydney’s Obseen providing the excitement, bringing a unique blend to ‘Already Gone’ that elevates it to the next level. While needing no help in the wow department, the epic chord shredding he brings to this production is the extra touch this stellar collaboration deserved. Another musical combination that always gets us going is the bright melodic stylings of Hyper Potions. Their latest release ‘Unbreakable’ is another sweet addition to their arsenal, with the vocals of Danyka Nadeau radiating the overwhelming positivity this song embodies.

It’s the same vibe that the Soda Island collective has championed from the very beginning, so it’s fitting that we have another song from their talented lineup of artists to celebrate. Ramzoid is our featured inhabitant on this occasion, dishing up a fresh dose of incredible creativity through the lush beats of ‘Nature Nature’. A tune so good they had to name it twice, our minds are continually blown by the incredibly imaginative work that is flowing from the island since its very beginning. Speaking of inceptions, we welcome another newcomer to the Dojo this week going by the name of Eli Way. Though only fresh on the scene, his debut EP Girls boasts a polish that would suggest an experience in music that dates much further than that. You’ll find a few of the EP’s works scattered throughout this week’s playlist, but we just had to call attention to the infectious jam that is the title track. Its retro lead will be stuck in your head all day.

For the rest of the week though, there’s no shortage of tunes to hold your attention. Peace out.

[Electronic] Bells and Robes – Latchkey (Feat. Flat Land)

Bells and Robes
Latchkey (Feat. Flat Land)

Bells and Robes first popped up on my radar last year with their album release, “One Should See Sound Pt. II.” It features a few outstanding songs with the soft electronic tones and recorded elements that have shaped their signature sonic style–definitely a catalogue we’d recommend digging into.

The other day I was happy to see that Bells and Robes are back with new music. There was a release a couple weeks ago that I missed, but luckily I stumbled on this new single, “Latchkey.” Expertly using the virtues of simplicity, the band delivers something special. Chilled keys, varied percussion and a soulful vocal part provided by the singer, Fae of Flat Land, is all Bells and Robes needs to deliver a laid-back and original sounding song. So listen up and be on the lookout for more music from this artist, I know I will be. Grab the free download above too!
